Easily the most comprehensive and detailed instructions I've found on the internet. Also looks fairly straight forward for the "non-woodworker" (me) to be able to complete. Thanks for taking the time and effort to make it a simple project.
Awesome Horizontal Langstroth Hive! I have the traditional Langstroth hives, and this design is going to make beekeeping so easy, and also make the bees happy! Thanks for sharing! I sent you an email request for the plans. You are a talented carpenter!
This was a long one, but I stuck it out to see how it all worked out. HA! Thanks for sharing. I hope to build my own horizontal hives one day. Land, chickens, and gardens first though! Great job. Cheers and God bless you guys.
I'm glad to see your shop is in as much disarray as mine. Lol. I really like the concept of the long box. I'm a retired heavy duty diesel mechanic turned carpenter and I've built several of the vertical boxes that turned out pretty good. I'll be using a dado set up for the cuts on the long pieces. I like to use rabbit cuts when I do them right. Your demeanor is great and entertaining.
Thanks Chuck!!! Yeah, I have a problem where I’m so glad to be finished with a project that I don’t take the time to clean up afterward…. I’m trying to do better 🤪
I like the overall design of the Langstroth Long Hive. I like the idea of having a pitched roof vs a flat roof. I have used the traditional Langstroth hives, but as I get older it is harder for me to lift those deep boxes, especially when they are full of honey. The design shows me that Doug put a lot of thought into the long hive.
Make a tall jig that fits over the fence to run tall boards through the saw safely. I see these cuts all the time and while I'm glad people achieve their cuts without injury, I'm always thinking "YIKES!" when I see these risky cuts being made. I will say at least you used your "shoe" to help run it through. Most people I see use their other hand!
I don’t do it that often and it’s harder to make a big like that for the delta unifence. The other style fence is much easier to make those kind of jigs
If you can force some room into your budget to install some solar panels on your workshop, and use them to power a split unit heat/AC unit, it will pay for itself very shortly, and you will very quickly appreciate the investment. You'll be comfortable all year long in your shop. If you can install a large enough battery bank, you might even be able to power some of your tools as well. VERY COOL PROJECT, and GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!!!
thanks to you I made one today - just have to finish painting and add the flashing. you made everything crystal clear thanks for sharing@@HisWayHomestead
Thanks 👍. I have neither your skills nor your tools but am thinking about laminating some plywood or hive boxes. Either way, very helpful. Love the lid.
@@HisWayHomestead Loving the top bar hives. Two packages installed a couple of weeks ago. Was the perfect winter project. Picked up two half sheets of 3/4" plywood and one half sheet of 5/8 sheething for free. Perfect. Time to start on this project now. No rush though.
Old school craftsman! well done, I love the design of the hive, pretty much the same hive we will have! I found this half way into the build and picked up a few pointers from your video. Thank you for posting.
I'm not a Safety Sally - however - Possibly using a feather board on your table saw would have pushed the finger safety meter to a much higher reading on some of those cuts. Just sayin'. Joe

Sorry I’m so late to the party. But I have some 4 year old treated 2x12s can I use these for my hive? Should I paint them first on the inside or just get some fresh wood?
I wish I would have learned wood working and bee keeping from my step-father before he passed away. I was only 20 so I didn't have enough sense to pay attention as I had other interests.
That was a hot day. Lol. I have been doing some research on the horizontal hive and pros / cons. How do you like it? Does it get very cold where you are in winter? Great job and thanks for sharing. - Tom “Outdoors and Country Living”.
I’m very new to bees so I don’t know all the pros and cons. I like it so far. It doesn’t get cold for long periods... we might have some days that dip into the teens, but rarely.
@@OutdoorsandCountryLiving a little suggestion that a friend of mine who has one of these hives said was the bee openings ie entrances should be on the ENDS ie the short ends for some reason it makes the bees spread out more along the hive and also makes it so if you put a separator in the middle of the hive box itself you can actually have 2 different hives in one long langstroth hive box
Deathly Rose thank you for sharing the information! There are always things to learn in life. :) Our winters are not terribly cold but it does freeze and get cold in the Midwest where we are. It’s in my list to build new hives this winter. Thank you and stay safe! - Tom
@@OutdoorsandCountryLiving no worries over wintering was actually part of the reason i commented i live in the PNW ie WA and that was the main reason my buddy used the SHORT ends as his openings so as the keep the hive well ventilated during the winter months
Alright…. Had to plane down the wood so that the freeman trays would fit. I could have made the length a little longer for the entire hive, but this was the easiest solution.
I just reviewed the plans and you build the bottom up together and I drilled holes thru the outer bands and screwed it to the bottom of the main hive body.
RidgeLife most use the layens frames which are a lot bigger and is really better for the bees. But good luck finding someone with an extractor for those frames
