What happened was the soda was dumped out of the container that holds most of the carbonation. So the reaction that is supposed to happen when the mentos were dumped in isn’t going to happen because not only did you lose the carbonation from the soda but you have a person sitting in the soda which stops it even more because of the oils in your skin. You might have gotten somewhere if she wasn’t in the tote. Or if you had more of an advanced ratio of soda and mentos b

The chemicals are the carbonation. By pouring it into a different vessel they lost a huge amount of it. By the time they were ready to drop the mentos, the coke was already flat. No carbonation, no coke fountain.
It's because of the carbonation from the soda- when you pour it out of the bottle it basically gets rid of some of it and so the mentos can't really make the soda react properly, it has nothing to do with whether the soda is diet or not :]
