Trackage that hasn't seen use in so long they had to dig it back out of the earth! Nice chase of DGNO as well. Always love seeing them. Every now and then i'll catch them in Garland if im lucky.
Always wondered what that yard with the Amtrak cars was for since I was little. Glad to see the DALT is still running! Would love to see it in action someday, though I fear 'someday' could be years from now. Would love to learn more about it, if I recall the original was merged into the SSW by 1994.
Once upon a time. the MoP's daily Vulcan switcher used to cross 10 diamonds out n back everyday, business as usual. Those days are long gone, but we can always remember. Witchita never got much respect as a railroad town, but, most of America didnt know what they were missin. I bet you know now, because,it dissapeared just as quickly everywhere else.
Unfortunately, railroading in DFW began to change around '79, '80 with the liquidation of the Rock Island. The deterioration continue thru the 80's with deregulation. We've lost so much - ATSF, SP, SSW, MP, RI, FW&D, Joint Texas Division (Dallas to Waxahachie), KCS, L&A, train orders, depots, brakeman, caboose...only memories now. I'm glad I was able to see it.
I remember talking with John a few times, even got to take the center cab out for a spin, wish they had more traffic to run on but I suppose it's better than not anything at all
Incredible video! I never knew that this line existed, nor that their collection was so diverse, including the recently retired Pacific Parlor Cars from Amtrak. Very unusually, Rail Guide, a website/app that showcases every single past and present rail line in North America, does not indicate any presence of this line, as it isn't shown as in service or abandoned, which made locating it somewhat hard at first. Nevertheless, this is still a great and very rare opportunity that you caught, as I also find the maneuvering between light rail catenary poles quite intriguing.
0:32 You can very briefly see what appears to be a heavyweight CNW car. This is actually Southern Pacific 117 "Tuscon", which was the Superintendent of the Tucson Division's car. It was rebuilt by SP in their Oakland Passenger Shops in 1981 and given full Sunset Limited colors. SP sold the car to CNW in 1987. Known to be rough rider, and was behind a few SP 4449 excursions during her SP career.
@@phmoffett It was sold by CNW to a short line that operated a Dinner Train. From there it appears to have been in long term storage for decades until the current owner bought it.
@mikehawk2003 thanks for this info. I'd like to check out DALT sometime. I was born in Dallas and lived here all my life. I worked for the KCS for several years, but never heard of DALT until now.
Hi Mason - first-time viewer and new sub! I would like to compliment you on your video skills, including editing. Too often smaller channels figure that they can put up crappy camera work, poor editing and just plain wrong narration, and it's just part of the territory. I like that you didn't try to make an 'Emmy" winning video - just really cool shots, smooth pans (too many people wave their camera like it's a flag and they're at a parade) and no 'dead air'. And thank God you know what a tripod is - and used it!!! The drone shots were also well done. I don't know what you do for a living, but your dedication to great technique is outstanding, and much better than many of the bigshot YTers that assume we'll watch any ol' crap they post just because it might be a rare shortline move. And you enunciated clearly and succinctly. Your drone work was spot-on; far enough out to figure out what the crew is doing, but close enough so we could actually see the action. And the screen notes were very helpful. Having never been to Texas (I'm stuck in Kali, but have both UP and BNSF come through town) you gave us a good idea of what operations this Shorty conducts. Plus, as a modeler there were TONS of ideas to pick from! Well done Mason - hope you shoot more soon! Highball The Roll-by. Now excuse me while I go check out the rest of your other videos... Vulcan Chem. used to use GE44 tonners to switch the plant out at Frontier s/w of Witchita, puttin the outbound blocks for the MoP back in the day. I dont know where they went, but I hope theyre still around somewhere. Those little locos were always very useful to sombody somewhere. The AVI/AVR, had a couple of them, their last ouple ot years. I'll bet they outlasted a lot of those Geeps that were on the big roads , when they were in their prime.
This is a privately owned line, restored to the main line in early 2000s after grade crossings were destroyed in a shortsighted repaving effort in '87. That was John at the throttle.
I've always thought this line was abandoned. Nice to see it being used for the first time in years.

Excellent camera work. the view of Dallas landscape is beautiful.
Thank ya!
I’ve driven across those old tracks on Chavez for years
Always wonder why they hadn’t been torn up
Have to go down and have a closer look
👍🏻
That center cab is nothing to look at but it sure is cool. New to the channel , you did a great job on the video.
Yeah, not typically one to get out of the house for a critter, more the line and the scenery
WOW! How long has this line been unused, you got SUPER lucky!
They bring something in or send something out every few years or so
i worked on the DG & O in ' 97 . we did a lot of switching around dallas and out to Greenville. now i see they have expanded even more . great job.!

Nice!
Nice show. You've got guts being on the ground in those parts of Dallas.
love the critter.
You can take a peice of track like that, and replace one tie in ten, every couple years, and get along just fine.
Damn! I pass by this area evertime come from my grandmothers house! She lives about 10-15 min away from this railroad crossing!
So clearly that shortline is not landlocked which was my fear, where is that coach going?
It's in Chicago rn, it's most likely gonna be used for one of Amtrak's special excursions

Where did the car originate and how did the Dallas Terminal get this car in interchange? I'll bet that's an interesting story.

That was filmed in late October, it got put on amtrak to NOLA and on to Ohio after that if I remember correctly

Shame those vintage 1950s/60s crossing signals don't work anymore. Cantilevers of that style are rapidly vanishing.
Yeah, they're really cool though.
It aint rocket science. Ties are what holds it all together. Just enough, is good enough. I dont think Amtrak's gonna come callin anytime soon.
It dosent seem like the DTR serves any industries, which is probably why it dosen't run all that often.
