Not bad. Couple of things: the cell phone would be fried be the EMP (Electromagnet Pulse) generated by nuclear bomb; the radio wouldn't work. He did well defending himself. It sounds harsh but you can't let mugger number three leave. His life was forfeit when they tried to take his. He would be a ongoing threat.
That's all good David. I appreciate your thoughts. That's exactly what the film aims to do. Let people think about the decisions an everyman would make if placed in his position.
We are...unfortunately it seems...not meant to be alone. It's when we have companionship, love, a child, a pet, someone or something to depend on or to depend on us, that we excel. You hear, "Money makes the world go 'round." But it doesn't. You see the richest people tend to be miserable. But the poorest who have genuine love or companionship tend to be not only the happiest, but also the healthiest. We all crave time to ourselves, but it's only temporarily. No...we are not meant to me alone.
I hope he doesn't stay alone and go to the next town, surely there's more people alive if he survived and didn't even experience a shock wave 🤦♀️ Ok he finally finds out he's not alone 🤣 yea!

This movie is a good example of what not to do when in proximity to a nuclear detonation . Note: 1.retain all resources, 2.seek protection from radioactive fallout 3. obtain all water and food needs, 4. seak heat , fire or energy 5. avoid conflict.
One of the better 'Post Apocalyptic' films I've watched in these 'Pre Apocalyptic' times, good effects and some fine camera work. the fight scene well choreographed. Especially like the frantic trying to open the Swiss Army knife. If I had one criticism, a short back story of him being dropped off by bus (or similar), as my first thought was "go get your car dude", minor detail though.
Thanks man. I appreciate the feedback! Yeah that could have worked doing it your way but we choose to keep it a bit more 'here in the moment' and try to give people a sense of being alone. Hope you felt like :)
Thanks for your thoughts, Jay. I don't think a nuclear attack is anything to worry about in New Zealand. But I agree something does need to be done about the Direction the country is headed.
Tip for nuclear survival films: light travels faster than sound. The flash alerts you, the sound arrives a few seconds later. Apparently he was too far away for a serious blast wave. Which is why he doesn't have radiation issues. Giardia, on the other hand, is everywhere.
Thanks for taking the time comment. I never knew that. But I want to make it clear that was not the purpose of this film to make everything factually correct about the nuclear blast, it was merely to set the scene for the character so we can understand his situation and experience his feeling of being alone.
It was all over for me once he destroyed his phone in a fit of anger. Doesn't deserve to survive and most likely wouldn't. Such a common device and way over used. Patience and courage is what you will need to survive.

Lame. NEVER leave an enemy alive. They come back for revenge you know. "The only enemy that won't keep me awake at night, is the dead one." ~Ryan Cawdor~, Deathlands series
You're assuming he should behave in a perfect way. This is not a documentary about how to survive. It's a short movie about someone who is not perfect and won't make all of the right decisions.
A clean shirt and socks, look through the medicine chest, clean water would be in the water heater-at least 30 gallons, firearms, a blanket, dry goods like tea and sugar, a lighter, more knives from the kitchen, I would have loaded up that backpack. Tear down the shower liner for rain protection. I'd get it done.

The basic concept of Freedom is something to carefully consider. For many, it's the LAST thing they want,- being obligated and tied down makes them feel needed and GROUNDED.That's fine, but be aware that the people you choose to surround yourself with might have different priorities and agendas, and consider how some of the things that seem to offer autonomy and flexibility can also be a burden and a trap. This is very true when choosing an S.O.; it can alter your path indefinitely.
First thought was"that dude is just out for a hike the way hes dressed" then the mushroom cloud appeared and it made sense. Liked the way it was just a normal day then, bam..he was alone. Shame he didnt have a Zippo, then he could have boiled some water at least. I liked it though, good job.
Hey Penny! Thanks for the wonderful feedback. I really appreciate the watch. Please be sure to check out some of my more recent films too. You might enjoy them too :)
Those wild leaves and fruits that he ate, are those correct? Studying that footage could save a life on day, it it's correct. In contrast to all the commentators who seem to have PhD's in post-apocalyptic science, this movie depicts quite well I think, how an average smart-ish guy might fare in that specific situation, if caught by surprise (we're not all Nostradamus you know, some of us will not expect the nuke). I found this movie to be satisfactory, even informative. Thanks. I am writing an apocalyptic audiobook called Apophis, this helps.
Hi Jan. Appreciate the comments. Its positive comments like this which encourage me to continue making films. The wild leaves and fruit were all based on edible foods in New Zealand. However in the safety of our actor and not being survivalists, we used lettuce leaves for the wild leaves and grapes to look like gooseberries. I'd love to know more about your audiobook. Sounds fascinating, all the best!
I get the idea, but kind of felt like a guy just living in a field for awhile with poor survival instincts. I guess not everyone is ok with being alone, but he went hiking alone basically so.... No feeling of urgency really; therefore, his dialogue at the end was lost on me. It’s hard to feel sorry for him also when the people in the city were likely going through actual suffering. Also, why didn’t he try another city? Or look for a rural house. Those are scattered everywhere, especially outside of a city. I live in the actual boonies of Mississippi and I still can’t go far without finding a house or a farm.
I live in Ohio in the boonies 20 Miles out to be exact away from another house or Royal road. I prefer living alone I've actually been called a hermit but I can walk all day an not see another liveing soul. If I wasn't killed by radiation I actually think I could survive it.
Well this film was shot in New Zealand and if you know the layout of our landscape and geographical location, it would be a tough ask to find another town. What's not explained is how many nuclear bombs went off. Anyway it's kind of the point that this everyman doesn't make all the right decisions and there are some consequences.
Good flick. But, I must point out one thing. Please take this as constructive as it may help in your next flick. Milli-Seconds before that nuke went off, his phone would have been toast. All Nuclear devices will emit an extremely powerful EMP (Electro-Magnetic-Pulse) shortly before Thermo-Nuclear Detonation. An EMP completely fries all unshielded electronics. Other than that, everything else was pretty much spot on. Nice job!
Thanks very much for the feedback Todd. We weren't really aiming to be too accurate with how it actually be in real life. But the thought process at the time was to create a situation where the blast was a long way away (hence how small the blast appears in the film) so that it wouldn't cause damage to him aka a safe distance from the blast zone. In saying that I have no idea how far an EMP would travel, do you?
@@AaronFalveyFalvation A low yield air blast at 1000 feet would allow the EMP to extend around 40 miles. A ground blast would be around 3 miles. In 1962, a high altitude, 1.4 Megaton warhead was detonated at approximately 250 miles up. The EMP caused electrical damage 930 miles away. There is a lot of wiggle room with EMPs because we have to take into account the explosive yield, type of material and altitude/distance. I appreciate your reply! Keep up the good work and, I'm looking forward to more from you and your team!
@@ToddHofer thanks Todd. Your expertise might be useful for our feature film we are making in November based around the aftermath of an EMP strike. Love to pick your brains sometime! Also.. you need to check out my latest work, this was shot back in 2013! I've improved a little since this ;)

This is great. Well put together in editing. The fight sequence is nicely done with the use of the knife a great detail. (as the knife appeared earlier in the film). The video here has a definite Jack London influence.
Thanks for your comments. I've never read any Jack London books, so interesting comment. Glad you enjoyed it. It took me a year to put together and was truly an international cast and crew which was the first time I have ever directed an actor remotely (narrative).
Aaron Falvey Jack London was known for the "man vs. man" or "man vs. nature theme", so that's why I brought the name up. Wow, an international cast and crew. That's amazing. I've done only local films while worked with others in different states in America. I like doing horror along with horror/comedy.
Cool mortalhellion yeah I am from New Zealand. I used an American writer, actor for the narration and a VFX artist for the explosion. Everyone else involved came from NZ. Thanks for watching my film. How did you come across it?
Aaron Falvey There's a lot of great countryside in New Zealand... ideal for different backgrounds. I don't remember how I came across your video here except that I like to find different short films on this website. I write, edit and direct all the videos while I use my friends as actors. Sometimes I take on smaller roles myself . I also have my own resident make-up artist for more practical effects.
Well he found people in the end. a nice happy ending ad I did enjoy the film. I was told that all electronics within a 200 mile radius of an nuclear explosion would cease to function due to the EMP pluses that get emitted in such events. Even modern cars would cease to work. But the military has stuff that is resistant to such events so don't worry and hopefully it never will if we can get the world to see sense, and stop banging the metaphorical and psychological war drums.
Devices with exposed wires longer than 12 to 18 inches MAY be knocked out. Cars with electronics for certain. Keep at least one vehicle with good old points ignition for just such an occasion. However, EMP is not severe in near ground bursts. EMP is the result of firing a device at very high altitude in the magnetic field lines of the Earth. THAT has an effect over wide areas. But, even that is NOT a 100% hit. Some stuff will work, some will not. It will be spotty. These things are mostly misinformation to keep the public scared, perpetrated by our unseen puppet masters. There is a lot of mythology about nuclear events, solar flairs and plagues. It is a symptom of our pathetically nihilistic times. Believe it or not, most of us will survive an initial atomic attack. Whoa to those enemy paratroopers that try to take the land after that. Russians on the east coast, Chinese on the west. USA, obviously. They will find it is a fact that there is a fire arm behind every blade of grass and two people who know how to use it.
Neat work guys! Very good continuity Shane, I was keeping an eye on that. Interesting using a Buller/West Coast map and having an international cast narrate. Adds a whole different element. Look forward to more shorts.
Nice one. I hope you do more in the future. Could explore different scenarios. Urban, rural, dessert and such. I like the heart felt speech at the end. One thing that made it plausible was you gradually became filthy.
Si Mulgrave thanks so much for taking the time to give me the feedback. I'd really love to do some more scenarios involving more nuclear strikes. The reason I haven't done anything other than rural is the shear expense to produce something. I'd certainly love to and if you have any ideas let me know. :)
Great job with the story! Well done sir. 👏 The only critique I could offer is do your research on the UN. Not the stuff your govt tells you, but the real truth about why they UN was created. It's ashame in this day and age, especially what we're currently experiencing, that people STILL don't know the evil behind this organization. Great story though, thanks for sharing!
I happen to be half owner and an Instructor of a Wilderness Living School. This WAS a survival film. He survived, until he was rescued. He would NEVER have been able to live in the wilderness though. Too many stupid moves and a writer who doesn't know anything about the outdoors except that grass is green.
Hey Olden Times. Appreciate the feedback. I'm glad my film encouraged you to comment as constructive feedback is very useful for us. This film was made a while ago and we are now looking at turning this concept into a feature. We are always looking for ways to improve. Perhaps you would like to jump on board as an advisor of some sort to suggest ways the scenes we create are more realistic? Let me know.
@@AaronFalveyFalvation Hey Aaron, Yeah, I could do that. I love teaching people about the wilderness and learning how to work with nature to survive and live. It's sad that modern mankind has become so unfamiliar with our natural environment. I think your out of New Zealand, right? About the only thing I couldn't give advice on would be your local edible plants and the wildlife that is peculiar to NZ. Anything else you might want to know though feel free to ask. Also, I realize the guy in your film was untrained, which is why it was about survival, which you did do VERY well, because (as was the point) he made a lot of mistakes that "Joe Blow" would make. As you can tell by my last sentence, I am not a writer, but I think you will get the meaning. Which brings up what I said about your writer. There was a reason why I wrote what I did, but would have to watch the film again to remember. Anyway, my apologies, as I am sure he knows more about the outdoors than green grass. I guess there is a way to private message on here, but I have never done it. If you come up with something I can help you with I guess pm would be the way to go for further contact.
@@oldentimes236 There is very few people who could survive in the wilderness over night let alone for a month or two. When I go hunting I always pack enough for 3 days in my pack. Thank God I have never had to use it.
@@TheDrummerman1951 True. True. Very smart on taking food hunting, you just never know. I know hunters who just walk in with nothing more than their weapon, tags and an orange vest. I usually pack my Scout-Kit (and I don't mean boy scout) and a trauma kit ( a real one with decompression needles, chest seals, etc.) along with my everyday carry items for wilderness emergencies. I also carry three days food even though I may be only a half mile from the hunting camp. Also in my Scout Kit (which never leaves my body) I have two 2500 cal. food bars. My food supplies would only be used in case of immobility and I could (with my body's stored energy) stretch that out to a month if I had to. If I was mobile I would go straight to small game traps, snares, fishing, etc. Where people screw the pooch is they do not practice. I regularly (during the winter) camp out in snow storms. I am talking about walking out into my back yard and setting up a camp during a snow storm and sleeping there. Ten day fasts two or three times a year are another good way to train and get rid of that unwanted pdding. It gets you psychologically fit for lean times. Setting up camp and getting a fire going in a torrential down pour builds hella confidence. There is an old Marine saying "If it ain't rainin' we ain't trainin'".
Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting! I guess at the end of the day , everyone is wired differently and this was the choice we decided for this character. :)

Pulling your phone out and trying to phone someone after a nuclear explosion, seems a bit pointless. The networks and phone electronics would have been totally fried by the explosion...😲😲
That's exactly right. But not everyone knows that. Especially our protagonist. But that is the point, to frustrate audiences with his decisions he makes as an everyman.
Corona Virus Pandemic and Economic recession here in the 2020 and 2021 winter are bad but this is not as bad as a entire city being nuclear bombed off the map of the known world
No shock waves from the nuke ? The music after the mushroom cloud had me thinking that it was coming ! Otherwise ; very , very good ; & thought provoking 👍 !
Thanks Jim. I really appreciate the feedback. This was an ultra-low budget film so we just had to make do with what we had for the production. Making physical shockwaves was a little complex in our remote location and I don't think VFX would have sold it.
i would have gone home or somewhere to get news on what happened. maybe too the next town not hit by the blast for supply's or something. you can't survive with just a knife.
Thanks for the tip Ronald. Nate really struggle to look right into that reflector :) What did you think of the film as a whole? I know its not perfect, but my story was aimed at giving a viewer a sense of what its like to be alone.
I liked it but being alone for a long time is difficult. I spent 2 Somers in Idaho and camped for weeks by myself and you can get extremely horde and lonely.
if i saw that explosion i would have sheltered in/ behind the ship expecting a blast to follow. stayed at the house where he found the beer (nice touch)
Excellent overall. Different than most I've seen, where there are small to large packs of survivors killing any other survivors they come across, as the main theme of entire film. Perhaps, it would be so, very sadly. Survival of the fittest without any heart or soul. In this one, I did wonder why if going on a weekend trek, he did not have rations, water, no means to make a fire, or a shelter, etc. Nevertheless, I certainly liked this.
Thank you Diane. I'm glad you enjoyed and appreciate you leaving a comment. The idea was that an everyman was out on a day hike and he wasn't fully prepared and certainly not a survivalist. I thought it made for a more interesting story :) Hope you can check out some of my other films too :)

What evil bastard would nuke New Zealand?!? That was the oddest use of a survival blanket I've seen, at least if he had died his knees & thighs would have decomposed at a slower rate than the rest of him. The bits of him stumbling around later looked a bit like a switch had been flicked.
Thanks for your thoughts. Never implied who did the nuke as it was not relevant to this story. Oddly enough with the blanket w asked him to wrap it around it but he naturally sat on it as it was more comfortable for him at that time. The ground was sodden wet.
William, thank you so much for your nice comment! I'm interested to hear what you thought was good about the film. Also interested to hear what you didn't like? I learn a lot from peoples feedback. Thank you for watching also!
william carnley where did you find this film? Was it shared to page or did you find through TH-cam? Ive had a huge increase in views so just wondering :)
Well, actually I did. To be honest, I can't imagine this would appeal to anybody but a person who stays in their basement playing video games all day and has no outdoor experience. I don't intend to be critical of your work, my critique would even apply to a Hollywood production. As an example, your character carries a survival blanket but can't find water while standing next to a stream, or so the narration goes. You can check my channel to see some of my experience. I don't have a channel to get viewers, only to share my experiences with friends. I use TH-cam as video cloud storage only. If you are an outdoorsman and have videos showing your activities I would be interested in viewing them.
Well as you are probably aware the whole point of this film is seeing how someone who doesn't have survival skills, stay alive. Whilst that may be frustrating from your perspective as a survalist, it's part of the journey his character takes. Good and bad decisions, most bad though. Makes it far more interesting. It's not meant to be a film about a guy making the right choices Everytime he's faced with a decision. Where would the fun be in that? :)
even when everything is falling apart - there is hope and a chance - he made it. it is one possibility of thousands others. i like the survivings of good people.
+Barbara Stoebel hey Barbara. I forgot to ask..Ive had a huge increase in views on this film. I was wondering if you can recall where you found the link to this film? Either through social media page or website or just on TH-cam?
Not a plausible scenario. A 1 Megaton warhead has a mushroom cloud 12 miles high, and most warheads are bigger. I would guess he was within 10 miles of the blast. A 5 Megaton warhead (500 times Hiroshima) would have caused permanent blindness from the flash and possible 3rd degree burns if he was with 7 or 8 miles. He should’ve been hit by a wind of at least 60 miles per hour. Assuming a full scale war, this man would probably suffer radiation poisoning or death, and a nuclear winter effect would shortly ensue. He was walking in the rain which must be avoided at all costs. He should look for an aquifer (pump or spring water) can’t drink from a stream. He should’ve ventured out to find canned food immediately. But ate things exposed to rain and soil. No hope. Modern nukes are way too big.
Not quite sure what the purpose of this film was. I realize it was made 10 yrs ago but even then we knew more about surviving something like a nuclear bomb. It's unbelievable the conclusion of the fight with the 3 guys. Until he ran into the soldiers it had only been a couple of weeks. He was in bad shape by then. He could have at least taken a small pot for boiling water to drink, a blanket to use as a bed roll, a better knife, any tools he could find, maybe another set of clothes, definitely socks! But all he took were two cans of food. Again, not really sure what the purpose was other than what not to do.
Where would the fun be in making a film about a survivalist, surviving. If you read the synopsis you would know what the film is about. Much more interesting for the common viewer about an Everyman having to survive in this situation. Hope that helps clear things up for you.
I know this was made 9 years ago, but I'm going to comment anyway. What a great treat the algorithms sent me!

You're assuming he should behave in a perfect way. This is not a documentary about how to survive. It's a short movie about someone who is not perfect and won't make all of the right decisions.
Should have gone through that house after you killed those guys. Might have found better fire arms and more things to survive with.
Might take more than 2 weeks to learn to do it right... he said earlier that he was no survivalist
There was a blanket on the couch I would have grabbed.
Hey ,he has a Swiss army knife ! And only cut one hand so far!
Hope you got through the rest of it Henry and watched him grow as a survivalist.

Fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
I really enjoyed this Aaron! Even the fight scene was realistic. Talk about production on a low budget! Well done!

@@AaronFalveyFalvation You succeeded. Really good film, Aaron. 🙂👍
The saw on a SAK is surprisingly capable. Guess that's the century of R&D talking.
First thought was"that dude is just out for a hike the way hes dressed" then the mushroom cloud appeared and it made sense. Liked the way it was just a normal day then, bam..he was alone. Shame he didnt have a Zippo, then he could have boiled some water at least. I liked it though, good job.

Oh, a story with a happy end. I like that!
Isn't it nice 🙂
I nearly jumped out of my skin when the guys ambushed him.
Lol you should have seen the audience when I screened this film in the cinema. You weren't the only one 😂
Really, I thought it was kind of telegraphed.
I'm a sucker for those jump shots..
I need a jolt once in awhile.

Excellent mortalhellion! Keep up the good work. I'll check out your films on your page.
Thanks for watching Jeremy. I appreciate your thoughts and feedback. Keep an eye out for a possible feature film development!

Si Mulgrave thanks so much for taking the time to give me the feedback. I'd really love to do some more scenarios involving more nuclear strikes.
@@AaronFalveyFalvation
Hey Aaron,
Yeah, I could do that.

Great little film, excellent actor
When the bomb went off he would have had eyesight damage but overall it was a good film.

at least there was no WW3 in real life.

Lots of questions to be asked. I have noticed no one is asking who did it?
Don't look in the direction of the blast or you will become blind.
Thanks for the tip Ronald. Nate really struggle to look right into that reflector :)
What did you think of the film as a whole?
I thought it made for a more interesting story :)

Wow does it ever show when someone has no outdoor experience, even their imagination reveals it.
I assume you didn't read the synopsis going into reading this one?
very good with a happy ending

The whole world is blasted and all you can do is eat berries ..COME ON MAN!
Technically they were grapes dressed by art department on natural thorns that were on the tree. 😂
Just is well this is a film and not a documentary! He did find canned food though and it kept him alive :P

So....the guy goes on a weekend trek, but takes no tent, shelter, sleeping bag. Really?
Other then that....well done.
We was just out of a day trip :)
Not so freekin fast Aaron boy. The description clearly says it was a weekend outing and not a day trip.
Diane Morgan, exactly. It says in the description it was a weekend.
This was pretty good.😊
Thank you!
