  • In this episode, MeatEater's Janis Putelis joins his father, Janis Putelis Jr. on the family property in south central Wisconsin to hunt rutting whitetails with archery equipment. Although Janis has hunted this place nearly his entire life, he's never given it the full court-press during the rut. The lifelong relationship with the land spurs memories of hunts past. Janis's early mentors weigh in with anecdotes of his early hunting days. #vortexpartner

I like how Janis' voice over is settling into a more natural sound as he is getting used to the role of being the main host/character on the episode. I'm loving all this youtube content with Janis and Cal and the more peripheral crew.

My father introduced me to hunting in a local public land forest when I was 10 or 11. We still hunt together in the same block. There's no place I would rather be... The sentiments in this video hit hard. Fantastic content!

This video speaks to me so closely. As someone who grew up hunting north-central Wisconsin, we now have a cabin on just 10 acres, but surrounded by tens of thousands of acres of public land. I relate to the MeatEater team so closely that the invitation is open to join our deer camp any time. God bless.

Pumped to see Janis using a saddle! I'm giving it a try this year myself. We had 80 degrees the afternoon before the MN firearm opener last year and I sat bow hunting in it, tough conditions to deal with. But I love too that this episode captures what hunting means to a lot of us northern whitetail hunters - not the arduous pursuit of game across vast expanses of the West, but of the pleasure of hunting with friends and family on a small patch of familiar ground.

I’m with you here. I get to hunt with my brother and uncle in my parent’s land in MN. It’s a small strip of land but we have success every year. That last opening forearm weekend was crazy warm. First time we had to work super fast to butcher the deer since it was 70 degrees!

I want to find a Latvian bakery & buy me some of those bacon perogi's. Truly enjoyed this episode, takes me way back to my hunting roots. My family emigrated from Eastern Europe as well, they used to do the shot of whiskey thing, & also put a little branch with leaves in the bucks mouth after the kill. The old generation in my family has passed, was nice to see Papa Janis enjoying the woods.

Hunting used to be more about the people. Now it's more about the deer. Pretty good job capturing that. We've reached a true crossroads when it comes to ego. I like to think we humans learn from our mistakes and as hunters navigating todays circumstances we've made some. Humanity is super complicated.

I loved this video. I remember all the guys getting ready to go to camp and not being able to go. Until one year when I was 12, I talked my dad into taking me out bow hunting. I killed my first buck that sit. I was able to join hunting camp that year and every year after. It was the week I counted down to every year. I learned so much each year, still do to this day.

My dad used to tell me....." A bad day hunting is better than a good day at work." Hard to argue with that. My grandfather took me on my first hunt. I was maybe 5 years old. I couldn't keep up so he carried me on his shoulders. The dogs put a big bear up a tree and they shot him. He fell into a fork in the tree about 20 feet up in the tree. I remember standing next to the tree looking into the bears eyes and the blood dripping from his mouth hit the tree trunk just above ny head sprinkling blood on my face. I've had a special place in my heart for bears ever since.

Enjoy your parents/father while you still have them because in the blink of an eye they will be gone. I lost my dad in 2017 and think about him every single day miss him dearly. He watched me in my younger years grow into a great bowhunter which was around the time when compound bows transitioned from old style round cams to the faster, harder shooting, hatchet cam bows that finally broke the threshold of a 300 fps compound. I was around 25 yrs young when this revolution happened and I literally slaughtered them like shooting fish in a barrel. My dad got to bear witness to some of the most amazing shots on deer with a bow that he had ever seen. Comments like "My God son how did you do that?" After a shot on a big doe crossing the field at 70+ yards from my tree stand in an open field edge. She went less than 50 yards and piled up no tracking required. I will be 53 in November and I have now resorted to using a crossbow during bow season as I can barely draw a 60# compound bow and can't hold it at full draw for more than a minute.
