Wouldn't recommend it at this time, especially after the assassination of one of their popular generals. Hopefully some day our two countries can work out their differences. Of course traveling internationally anywhere for the time being isn't going to be easy.

I seen a guy in a video on you tube, i think in Africa, the sawyer had an ancient Stihl contra chain saw, he used the same method, making a shallow kerf first then deepened it, the best part was that he had flip flops on. These (your videos) inspire me to make my you tube channel better, thank you posting and sharing!

Nothing better than watching creative people doing their trade!
Real life beats Hollywood every time!
Thanks for sharing Louis, and please thank the men in the shipyard when you get the chance.
In 1996 I was on vacation on the Azores, they have a very old tradition building whaling longboats, and some are still built but with the purpose of leisure and other fishing.
They are built with the local trees called cryptomeria, that was imported from Japan many years ago, because they grow very fast in the climate there.
As you might know, cryptomeria is a cedar type that is very light but strong, and is perfect for building boats.
I can recommend traveling to the azores visiting sawmills, shipyards and the old whale hunting museum.
They are fantastic boat builders. Just like you!

That's one of the best things about wooden boat building is that you can find international work crews at just about any boatyard even the smaller ones in far off places you wouldn't expect to find a "foreign" Shipwright. I mean, come on, a Frenchman and an American in a Chilean boat yard, working side by side with experienced Shipwrights and students? That is awesome!
I can't make it to New York this Saturday, but would love to follow your journeys around the world and see some of your visits to other boatyards.
Watching you build is great, but seeing other techniques, and similarities, from around the world is super interesting as well. Thanks, Lou, for sharing this with us. God Bless, fair winds, and following seas.

Lou , As always ---Really Awesome the work and contributions You and Your team give to the Wooden Boat (and Ship) World. These "Lou Goes To Chile "video series have enlightened and inspired Me. I was in the "Totally Unaware" category about this great Chilean Ship Building Industry. I recently attended the 47th annual "Tall Ships America" convention in St. Petersburg .Fla and told People about The Ship Building in Chile and nobody knew (They Do Now) about it. Great You and Your team are getting the word out. Steve Cross akaSuperAX

I'm glad you went to Chile. My first impression of Chile was the excellent fruit that comes from Chile. Grapes and particularly cherries. Then viewing the Military parades over the years on youtube and other videos on TH-cam shot by residents of Chile . So impressed that Chile is a modern progressive Counntry.
Sorry to hear about the discontent of the recent protest apparently everything isn't well for the people of Chile and now you give me a different tour . I can't help it , Chile is a fascinating Country

Lou, you would be welcome on our tiny Greek Island of Agistri. Three generations of boatbuilders are working here. Grandfather Adonis, his son Vangelis and his son Adonis (Adonakis = little Adonis). I have a house for you to stay in which is 200 yards from the boatyard. Oh, and all the fish you can eat, plus all the wine you can drink.

Interesting how those trawlers look a lot like the traditional Goelettes (French word for schooner) used on the St. Lawrence River in Quebec in the early part of the Twentieth Century. For those who are interested, several exemplars of these vessels can be seen at the quaint maritime museum located in St. Joseph sur la rive, about an hour's drive East of Quebec City.

Lou. the almost perfect chainsaw cuts are done by only cutting an inch at a time .. they were trying to get that to you but it got lost in translation.. when you only cut an inch deep.. you control the cut.. when you cut full bar deep the chain controls the direction of the cut by how much slop is in the chain and guide groove on the bar. . thats brilliant of them to figure that out.. there is a way around it allowing you to cut full depth... new chains and new bars so the chain with a factory grind is the only one used for full depth cuts.. also invest in the Stihl chainsaw sharpener to match your chain pitch.. they call it a "Stihl 2 in 1 Filing Guide" when you sharpen your chains with that.. look carefully at the chips that come out of the cut.. instead of saw dust it comes out as curls like you took a hand plane thru the cut.

*Wonderful video. What fun. Yup, you would pick up building with a chainsaw alone within a week's time. It is slow and takes strength and patience, but the cost benefit is huge when you don't have a sawmill or a Woodmizer horizontal band saw or an Alaskan Saw mill set up, OR a Ship's band saw because of the expense of those things ... that's for sure.*

Since i live in the land of the Eucalyptus tree, i am curious as to what species are used in ship building, so I found they grow Blue gums over there (Eucalyptus globulus,) and is red gum grown as well.
Red gums are killers, large branches can fall on hot still days, i have seen it happen, often campers get killed because they put their tents under or near the rees. But that could happen with any large tree i suppose. Thanks for the great Video's Lou.

I built a few wooden boats from the 1960s to the 1980s. The last one I built was an A-Class catamaran. 1/8" ply, stitch and glue, using copper wire, woven mat and epoxy resin on the "keel" join. Sort of semi WEST system. Very light and very strong. Bending the ply in two dimensions makes it very rigid.
The technique has been supplanted by ultra-light, emotionless, plastic hulls built in factories. And the price of an A-Class catamaran has gone stratospheric. Ah, well.
Mind you, I would have loved to sail the foiling A-Class catamarans, whatever the technology and whatever the price. I got a bit old.
Have you ever explored this construction method, Lou?

I will sign on the petition " Lou and Leo Meet At The Tally Ho " . The segment "Milling Live Oak In The Deep South" that Leo recorded at My Sawmill and Area currently has the record (I am pretty sure) for views on Leo's "Tally Ho" channel at 700,000 views but if Lou and Leo recorded a video that would smash that record. Great video. Love your enthusiasm. Do you know what species of Eucalypt they use there? We obviously use a lot of Eucalyptus here in Australia for commercial craft but my understanding is that Eucalyptus outside of Australia has been transplanted.

At 4.47 just look at the timbers that form the side rails. Wow!
