in 2006 myself and 2 friends decided upon a 'Long Way Round' style trip, inspired by the Charlie and Ewan. We didn't't have their budget, we didn't have a tv crew, in fact we didn't really have money. We set off from the UK, 2 of us on XT 600's and I was on a newer XTz660. our route was not dissimilar to yours until we got to Mongolia. I and a friend ran out of money, though the 3rd chap by chance met another English guy and they both continued on the Road of Bones through to Magadan and then to USA.
Overall, my most memorable occasions were the ones when were were in trouble. ALWAYS someone came to our assistance. If it were a push, if it were a spanner, if it were welding, if it were a bed for the night and a drink together.
We found, the less people have, the more they are inclined to share it with you. Often we found ourselves in a spot of bother (even a similar in Ukraine to your russian visa problem (100 Bucks made it go away to the right person)) but it was a life changing experience. If you are thinking of doing something similar, DO IT. Life is short, life is uncertain and life is for living. LIVE IT!

Sounds wonderful. My first time back packing the Philippines I stayed at a village and the family I arranged to stay with had breakfast cooked for us. We hiked around the base of the Mayon volcano, came back down for lunch and they claimed they had nothing.
Turned out they fed us the last of their food. Long story short you are right, the more poor people are the more they want to help.

My longest tour was 2000km, the only issue I had was that I ran out of fuel (500m before the gas station and it was totally my fault, the range is fine). The fuel gauge is a bit pessimistic xD
The only other things I did (except the regular maintenance at 12k and 24k)was change the tires, replace the fork seals at 18k km and change the chain at 22k (it was already in bad shape when I bought it)

My father and his twin brother set off on their bicycles in the summer holidays from school with instructions from their Mother to be back before School restarted in the Autumn . They where ten years old. They did a loop circuit from Rochdale in Lancashire, around Wales and North Devon, and down to Lands end, then back up through Exeter and Bristol, Birmingham and home, around 1948.
I can't imagine a ten year old setting off and doing the same today. Even in my life time travel and many other things have changed, like the phone and GPS. The amount of vehicles and roads increases nonstop. When my father set off on his three speed bicycle, traffic was minimal and slower.
As a seasoned traveler on a bicycle I've stopped at the last restaurant before the ferry to spend the last of my money on hot food and been denied entry because they had a strict no shorts policy on the door. After five weeks of intense cycling my legs now looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger's, so I couldn't get my only pair of emergency skinny jeans on. The laughter of those inside as I tried to squeeze into them brought the manager out to invite me in whilst wearing my shorts, and my meal was on the house.

I was stationed in the US Army in the the Panama Canal for a year and a half. I took my release from active duty in the Canal Zone in 1968. I wanted do something to underscore and celebrate getting through the service with all the parts and pieces I had before being drafted. I left Panama on my new Norton Atlas 750 and rode it 4,000 miles through seven Central American countries to Los Angeles. As I recall, there were revolutions ongoing in Guatemala and El Salvador at the time. Norton was the fastest bike in production then and it had a nice big gas tank. I wanted to be able to outrun any other vehicle between myself and the states. There are so many side stories to this adventure. I'd like to do it again. It was the epic adventure of my life.

I still believe you choose the right bikes despite the finicky fuel pumps. A lot of other long distance ryders in TH-cam choice of preference is the very heavy and expensive Bmw wich really struggle on rough terrain, specially on sand. They fall down all the time and because they are so heavy they cant even lift them up by them self. I was supposed to watch just a few minutes but I had to watch it all. Great video ! 🏍

But you guys an hour more is so much fun to watch i have learned so much bout those places i could never go riding.

Thank you very much for this great video about your amazing trip, mates ! I can feel every second of your amazing and sometimes bad situations, because from 2012-2016 I travelled with my austrian travelpartner by pushbike from Munich to Singapore and completely around Australia including Tassie...28.000km in total. After a very bad food poisining in Kashgar my travel partner and me had to go back to Bishkek for a new chinese visa and spent four months there in KGZ...... the most impression experience was the very amazing kindness and hospitality of the people on the whole trip. my next adventure will be the Panamericana from Anchorage to Ushuaia, but then by motobike.. stay safe and healthy and enjoy your life !

Your video randomly came on while I was tinkering in my garage on my ktm. I listened while I worked for about the first 15min, after that, all worked stopped. I was glued to my phone as I immersed myself in your experience. As in life, your journey proved that the reward is not reaching your final destination, it's the triumphs and adversity faced along the way that provides the memories and the ultimate prize for ones soul. I wonder how difficult this trek would be to navigate today given the current climate of uncertainty from country to country?
    What a great experience!
