Hard to overstate just how big of a deal this game was on release. Story elements in games at this time were ruled by FF7-style rendered FMV sequences, and they were a huge driver of games word of mouth. MGS using real-time video story sequences was an absolute game changer. MGS drove the entire industry in so many ways, for years after its release.
Played this game when i was 7 years old back in 1999. I couldnt Figure out how to get past the first elevator and kept getting caught and killed. My dad Showed me how to break the genome's neck and was hooked "You enjoy all the killing..thats why" -Liquid
I was 5 when It came out and my dad bought me it. I played about 10mins and I was scared of the guards spotting me. So I didn’t play it for about a month but I eventually had the courage to play it and loved every minute of it
Thanks for making this awesome video on one of my favorite games of all time...and on a side note, sending love to Jeremy Blaustein as the English translator for this epic game and all its crazy long dialogue in codec calls. Mainly, I hope he gets the credit he deserves for the translation of the original Silent Hill 2 remake down the track when they reuse his iconic work in English.
I've watched all 3 of your MGS reviews and I have loved them. Metal Gear Solid is my favorite franchise in all of fiction. Great work man, keep it up! (and also, keep them coming!!!)
This is 100% the best game ever made. The characters, story, twists, the incredibly emotive music and the way it makes you feel like you are right there with Snake through the whole thing. Nothing I have played since or before has even come close to it. Flawless masterpiece.
This is how you should do cinematic games, not just put you on a corridor with a fixed over the shoulder camera to partake in extremely shallow gameplay for netflix tier stories
I got to play the originals and read the book (there was a series of NES games novelized) before MGS came out. They released a demo disc via pizza hut, and I was BLOWN AWAY. It was a great game.
Thanks for bringing attention to this hidden gem of the 90's. I wish the creator continued the series instead of making six open-world, survival zombie games.
Indeed the way it was made you can tell it wasnt meant to be followed up with a direct sequal. Snakes story was meant to end there. Snake gets forced out of retirement. He being blond as well btw if you look at the game intro. Then he goes back into retirement. For good with a new life and angle
I find it odd that I'm older than you. I was born in 96. My first metal gear game was metalgear for nes. That was in 2000. Then in 2002 I played metal gear solid. In 2007 I played mgs3, then in 2009 I got mgs2, 2012 I believe I got peace walker, then 2016 I got mgsv both parts. And yet I was still surprised and disappointed that raiden was in mgs2, like almost after a decade after it was out (I didn't have internet)

Here's some more Kojima trolling: All these other games have the word Solid in their titles but Solid Snake in not a character in these games! Wham.
As a Metal Gear channel enthusiast, you will get a nice bump of subs from this.
No subsequent entry ever came close the coolness of this game. This game is the dragon we all chase. That's why I will always return to it.
I think all of them are 10/10. However this one has the most sense of realism, which makes it the best entry way to the series.
