This video made me want to watch the DVD again, but I haven't played it with the commentaries yet. And your comment Sir, has meant that in a short while when I watch this again I shall have Bruce's commentary running! Thank you for that!
I was living with my folks for a bit, and rented this from our local mom and pop store, watching it in the living room. Mom sat down to watch it as well. At some point, Dad wandered in and asked what we were doing. "Watching a movie about an elderly Elvis, a black guy who says he's JFK, and they're fighting a cowboy mummy. And for some reason, I can't stop watching it." answered my mom.
Truthfully one of my favorite films. My late husband and I watched more than a few times and laughed as much at 6 or 7 as we did the first time. Simply brilliant!
I LOVE Bubba Ho-Tep and have had the DVD for years from when it first came out but I don't think I've ever met anyone else that has seen it. Ossie Davis is such a legend and Bruce Campbell is unbeatable. This movie is just so much fun. Thanks for the behind the scenes look at one of my favs!!
First Mystery Men, now Bubba Ho-Tep, it's like you're reaching into my mind and plucking out the cult films I love. Now I just need you to do The Brothers Solomon for the hattrick!
As I read your comment I went "Yep, yep, ooh, not heard of The Brothers Solomon. But as you like the first two movies mentioned and I do also, it would be silly not to look into your suggestion. I shall look into that film. I may or may not like it, but regardless I thank you for suggesting something new for me!
Not only did I get to see Bruce during his book tour I also got to see this movie over in Berkeley on opening night. What a treat! And Campbell did a great job bringing empathy to Elvis. You really did get the sense that he regretted his choices, especially losing Priscilla.
Minty, you never fail in choosing a movie like this that I have had on the shelf for ages that deserves a rewatch, or introducing me to more movies I may not have seen. You're providing an important public service and not getting government support, which to me is unfair!
I just happened to be attending Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX in 2002. I found out that Joe Lansdale lived there. When the movie came out, we had a tiny local premiere. I had the completely randomized pleasure to introduce a Q&A panel consisting of Joe Lansdale, Don Coscarelli, and Bruce Campbell. (I was a bit nervous, over dressed, and over-the-top, so Bruce sat down and said, "Thank you, whoever the HELL you are!") Man... all of my buddies got to meet Bruce at the local hotel bar, but I was still just underage... I took a couple classes with Lansdale at the school: screenwriting, and comic-book writing. No, I didn't need the credits, but come on. Coscarelli came back to the class to talk to us about writing Phantasm. Lansdale was totally country, but eloquent at the same time. His way of grading was, "If it sucks, you get an F." Fans of this movie should look up Lansdale's "The Drive-In," and "Dead in the West" (or "Deadman's Road" anthology) -the latter two, mark my words, will become amazing Western Horror films in the future, complete with a monster-hunting gun-toting priest. Also, "The Thicket," if the movie ever gets made.
Sidenote: We watched Lansdale's episodes of Batman in class, and commented (and lampooned) on them. Coscarelli had tried to do a movie of "the Drive-In" in 1989, so he wrote the introduction for the The Drive-In trilogy anthology.
We live between Houston and Galveston (Friendswood). We heard about the premier and drove up, grabbed a hotel room in the same hotel Campbell was in, and were at the first showing. Awesome time. And I'm jealous about the screenwriting class, that had to be awesome.
Arguably the best three bucks I ever spent buying that movie. Had even seen it before, and just happened to catch it in the wild for that low of a price. Could not refuse.
Two of the most brilliant, flat out inspired audio commetaties ever are Robert Downey Jr. in character the entire two hours on the Tropic Thunder cast commentary where he just roasts everybody, but especially Jack Black and the other is Bruce in character as Elvis for this commentary. He is simply sublime. Its the little touches that make his Elvis impression the best I've ever heard. Particularly when asked by his co-star the favorite of his pictures he ever did and Bruce fully embracing Elvis and the question, states it was Viva Las Vegas where he then describes the plot of a whole other movie and clearly thinking an entirely different film. Its punctuated by his line, ' Yep, that picture had a lot of mystery, sense of atmosphere, intrigue.' Its that last word: intrigue. The key to my Elvis impression that seperates it from everybody else's is working that word into it. It always kills. While the rest of the amateur hours do the obvious 'thankyouverymuch' and he's 'left the building, ' this always hits in it's simplicity and ringing true. Bruce is a genius. Thank you, my dude.
Great movie pick for review minty. These are the kind of movies that got me to start watching your channel all those years ago. More cult/ obscure movie reviews plz.
I remember during a San Diego Comic Con, this movie was making the rounds. My best buddy at the time was telling me about it. I remember thinking, " . . . Bubba-Ho-Tep? What da F@#K!?" Years later, I was on an Elvis discovery, and how his charisma made the man a STILL vaunted legend. I came across this movie in the Best Buy DVD aisle, and decided to add it to my growing Elvis library. Funny thing is I was so taken by it, and still impressed by Campbell's performance AS Elvis, despite all the funny, that I showed it to my grandmother, father, sister and brother-in-law. I had already showed it to my mom, and she loved it alot so she helped me talk my other family members into watching it on a visit. After it ended, I turned to my family to see how much they liked it, and my dad said, "what the hell did we just watch?!" My grandma sat there smiling, but I could tell she was perplexed about it. She got the jokes, and laughed at Ossie Davis' performance, but she didn't really get the weirdness. Somehow they missed the poignancy of some of it. It's a unique movie, but these same people didn't get The Big Lebowski when I showed it to them, either.
The best Mummy/Elvis movie ever! It had a Pharro( Bubba Ho Tep) a President( JFK, Extreme undercover!!😀) and a King( Elvis) what more can you ask for!👍💪😎

Wish we could post pictures in the comments, I want to show my mini movie poster of Bubba-Ho-Tep I had autographed by Bruce Campbell in 2010, I love this movie!
I knew the art director of this film, Justin Zaharczuk, personally for years. We both lived in the same area. He sadly passed away in 2018 from skin cancer. I still miss that guy. He was quite a character.
I absolutely love this movie! I never cared the Bruce didn't look like Elvis. I guess Bruce's awesomeness causes locations to burn down. They just can't contain his greatness lol! Great vid Minty!

One of my all time favourite horror-comedy movies, and the short story is also brilliant. Hooray for Joe Lansdale, Bruce Campbell, Ossie Davis, and everyone involved with this film. Love it!

I love Don Coscarelli films but I don’t think I even finished this one bcuz it bored me. I was young tho so I might have to give it another shot. I LOVE John Dies At The End and of course the Phantasm series so I’m excited to revisit this one soon 💯
This is the greatest sleeper hit ever. I remember walking into the video store and walking past this movie like 50 times till I stopped and noticed that it was Bruce! Love this film
Bubba Ho-Tep is awesome! I remember seeing it listed on Netflix for DVD and was thinking WTF is this?!?! Then I saw Bruce Campbell playing old Elvis vs. a mummy and that was a combination I couldn't resist. A definite CULT CLASSIC
That's why people like this movie. Because Bruce. If it wasn't Bruce but another actor did exactly EVERYTHING the same, it wouldn't be as loved by Bruce fan boys
I saw the movie at a cool old theatre in Portland Oregon. Bruce was going to be there, but cancelled (as the sign on the door said: "Bruce Campbell's appearance has been cancelled due to a lack of Bruce Campbell.").
❤ this film. i worked at MGM home entertainment and the Acquistion guy would let us watch some of his potential buys. my boss and i both said we wanted this movie for MGM HEG. we got it too.
Always thought that bizarre movies with bizarre plotlines existed in old sitcoms like "Leave it To Beaver." But my wife and mother, over the past decade or so, have watched just about every A, B, and C horror/drama movie known to mankind. So seeing a movie with a bizarre plot line like this actually intrigues me.
I had no idea that this fantastic movie was based on a book! Now I have to go hunt it down. It's super disappointing that we never got to see the sequel but, I'm also super glad that it didn't happen without Campbell. It wouldn't have been the same!
Bruce!! How is it, the only people who know about this film are only on social media? I've yet to actually meet someone in person who knows this movie.
I was living in Nacogdoches, TX when the movie released. That is where the writer, Joe Lansdale, lives. They were doing a special premier at our theater and I just happened to be there watching another movie. I had no idea the premier was happening and hadn't heard of the movie at all. So I looked down the hall and saw Bruce Campbell standing in the hallway by the door of the auditorium it was playing in. I guess he was watching the audience. I instantly recognized him since I had been a fan of his earlier work like Brisco County Jr and Army of Darkness. So I walked up to him and shook his hand. He was very nice. Very surreal moment since it was completely out of nowhere.
I own a copy of the DVD, but I saw it first on the big screen. I had no idea what it was about, just knew that Campbell was starring and was walking by the theater. One of the best impulsive purchases of my life.
I saw this movie a couple of years after it was released and knew that it was going to b e a cult classic. It was a LOT of fun to watch and so very bizarre. You did a great review on this Minty. :)
10 things I didn't know? You could've listed 80 things! I had no idea this movie even existed! I'm going to go watch it now, though! Cool video, Minty! -Vic
I remember insisting we get the DVD, sight unseen, because Bruce Campbell had mentioned it in an interview...I sold it to my mom as basically another Army of Darkness
I found this movie about five years after it had been released and I absolutely loved it it is so ridiculous but so funny at the same time I completely recommend this for anyone who is a Bruce Campbell fan.
The first time I saw this movie was a few years back on COMET here in the US(they had a special screening with limited commericals to celebrate it's broadcast debut), which is an awesome OTA, & free streaming SciFi TV network owned by Sinclar Broadcasting, and man what a wild ride, but I don't look at as Elvis never died, but a man who got so lost into impersonating Elvis that he really thinks he is Elvis.
I was fortunate enuf to see a thaterical viewing of Bubba Ho-Tep in Tower Theater in Sacramento California. In a darkened theater made it amazingly atmospheric .... a top 5 theater experience
I'm pretty sure I knew it had a tiny budget. RIP Ozzie Davis. I am also pretty sure I saw this on a though-the-mail Netflix DVD (and of course loved it). Which may explain why I haven't watched it again yet (not on shelf).
Great movie that definitely deserves more love and exposure! Thanks for covering it! "Sadly, the hospital for mentally ill, homeless, and veterans was sut down in the 1980s." In the words of Nearle Crews from te "Frisky Dingo" cartoon: "Thank you, Ronald Reagan . . . your legacy is intact!"
This is one of my absolute favorite movies, but I love the film score by Brian Tyler on its own even more. There is something forlorn and nostalgic mixed with heroism that hits all the right notes.
Our local College has a film showings of Althouse and after market blockbusters. I heard of this and love Bruce Campbell so I had to take a day off of work to see it. TOTALLY FELL IN LOVE with the "Camp"yness of it.
I tear up every time Kemo-sabe dies. I live in the southern US. I've gotten more people to watch this movie by saying "Bruce Campbell plays Elvis." Both gents are extremely popular here.
Not only is this a brilliant film, but I love that the DVD has Bruce doing commentary in character as Elvis. Quite a treat to hear.
This video made me want to watch the DVD again, but I haven't played it with the commentaries yet. And your comment Sir, has meant that in a short while when I watch this again I shall have Bruce's commentary running! Thank you for that!

This is one of the most amazing movies ever and has been in my Top 5 since it's release.
I was fortunate enuf to see a thaterical viewing of Bubba Ho-Tep in Tower Theater in Sacramento California. In a darkened theater made it amazingly atmospheric .... a top 5 theater experience
Fun funny as heck movie. Great one ❤
I'm pretty sure I knew it had a tiny budget. RIP Ozzie Davis. I am also pretty sure I saw this on a though-the-mail Netflix DVD (and of course loved it). Which may explain why I haven't watched it again yet (not on shelf).
It's definitely a funny movie. Props to Bruce Campbell and Chuck Connors for great acting.
I was lucky to see it in cinema at the fantasy filmfest in Germany.
Bruce is now in the perfect age to act in a sequel or prequel.
I only came across this yesterday.
I'm an crippled old party girl - them battling in wheelchairs was class -
and I cried at the end!
As an Elvis and Bruce fan, this is an entertaining movie.
