I'm just now re-watching this, and I'm still SO proud of how Madusa, Piper, Sting, and Heenan handled themselves so articulately. But OH, I'm SO glad Piper was among them to kick things up a notch - he was a true master at that, imho. :-)

Props to Piper for breaking out the metal hip and his Owen reference. He was a great defender of the business. Madusa was well spoken and professional while keeping cool while defending and explaining with disclosure the nature of the business and their performance. Roddy did it well, and he always did it his way. Balls out and rowdy as hell, always ready for a fight!! RIP MR. PIPER.

The majority of people commenting here are apparently wrestling fans, as they seem to think the wrestlers did a good job of talking about their fake show. I should have known this, most commenters are people of apparent low iq that will fall for anything. God bless America!

That's always been the problem with Bill maher. Every time he's on TV he has to prove to everybody how smart he is by insulting people that no one ever hears each other. He is lucky there were other people there because Rowdy Roddy Piper was an extremely intense individual and I wouldn't be surprised if he would have taken more to the Woodshed for real if the Stinger hadn't been there to help calm tensions

+Exodus Pessoa As grateful as I am to have experienced Heenan the way I did, I always thought that too... he just had timing that no one else did, and he never needed a fucking writer to tell him what to say, either. He's a genius, and like I was talking about with someone else on here, he really needs to start communicating with his fans via the Internet. He was literally stripped of his voice, but he still has his humor, and that's the perfect way for him to express it. Can you imagine a weekly article by Heenan where he's in character?

  • @OSW
    @OSW 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Great! Never seen this before. I thought the wrestlers were being intentionally contentious about the phrase "in on the joke" as obviously wrestling is choreographed for maximum entertainment and safety. I'm glad Piper (who is so scary when he talks quietly!) brought it up that it's because they hear the same sentiment over and over that they automatically go off. It made the segments ill-at-ease and only very fake-friendly. Because of that "it's fake" mentality, wrestlers can overcompensate by hiding injuries and outworking any other sport. Bottom line, don't fuck with wrestlers.

Thanks for posting this. WCW couldn't have picked a better foursome for this panel. All well spoken, but not similarly so, legends of their craft (all four in the WWE HoF), and understands the biz throughout.
I remember watching this when it aired, and although I'm a big fan of Maher, I cringed on his first question. I understand the spirit of it (and the answer is YES), but it was phrased poorly. Fortunately, everyone recovered, and I think non-fans learned something from it.

The honest definite ultimate truth about Pro Wrestling no matter what lies anyone would say, is that the outcome is predetermined. For the most part they follow a script. The wrestling part itself (not counting promos, other non in-ring wrestling segments) is mostly improvised with the exception of the finishers and special spots/moments in the match. Some matches might be following the script more than others but generally speaking most of it is done on the fly.
As for the bumps/hits the wrestlers take. Physically, they're real. You can't fake being thrown off a ladder into a bunch of tables. But the moves/hits are being performed/executed in a way where they intend to cause as little damage as possible to their opponent. They pull punches (don't throw them with full force). They cover their face when being thrown head first into steel steps or catch a superkick etc.... They're essentially stuntmen.
When pouring gasoline on the tables before lighting them on fire it's actually water they're pouring.
When bleeding they're actually for the most part doing it themselves by blading (cutting their foreheads etc... with a small hidden type of blades) or in some other cases use blood capsules.
All these small things are done to make the whole package so to speak look real.
THAT SAID. Sure accidents CAN happen. Obviously. Lots of things can go wrong. And there are times (mostly in Japan and Indies) where some wrestlers might work stiff (they might not pull punches and might be more rough with their opponents) but GENERALLY SPEAKING most of the action is controlled and scripted.

6:40 .... Key word which Madusa used to describe why pro-wrestling was so great, *mystique* ... And that's the problem with today's WWE, there isn't that mystique element which makes pro-wrestling so great.
The fact WWE has lost close to 4 million viewers over the last ten years is proof that WWE no longer has that mystique element.
The "top guys" (Cena/Reigns) fail miserably in comparison with previous top guys such as, The Rock, Stone Cold, The Undertaker, Macho Man, Hogan... I'd love for pro-wrestling to return to it's glory days where wrestling had cross over appeal. Just look at the original nWo, even here in Melbourne Australia where back in 1996 we didn't have pay per view, pay TV pretty much didn't arrive till 1995ish, and until mid to 1997 pay tv was only available to a very limited market, yet you'd see nWo shirts EVERYWHERE!!!
And for the most part they were all bootlegged because we didn't have a pro-wrestling store, and Kmart and Target hadn't started selling wrestling merch!
The nWo had major cross over appeal, and sadly I don't ever see that happening again.

Maher was getting owned by ALL four of them! Medusa and Sting with the calm logical approach to explain things. Heenan with jokes that were, in reality, subtle jabs that Im not even sure Maher was catching on that Heenan was making fun of Maher's complete ignorance. And then Hot Rod, just topped it off with an 'in your face' attitude AND a devastating 'shame on you' with the mention of Mrs. Hart.

In case you are wondering, this episode of PI was in 1999 or 2000. Maher mentions Sting's television movie called Shutterspeed debuting next year. That movie came out in 2000. It's also available to watch on TH-cam in full, it seems.

The biggest mistake is always to try to make the wrestlers admit it. If you think it's BS, just say so.

I hate the "wrestling is fake" crap more than anyone, but Piper's attempt to shame Maher by bringing up Owen Hart was unfair; Owen didn't die while wrestling or due to in-ring work. He had so much else to draw from (Austin's broken neck, Foley's million injuries, etc.) that this was a cheap, melodramatic thing to do.

This might be the one thing I don't agree with Bill on, they said many times we are stunt workers, We do this for entertainment, we all knew it was fake long time ago but we're entertained. Pipers hip, and shoulder and broken ribs, and wrist are not fake, noobs not knowing the ropes really hurt him. Piper and Andre we some of the best matches cause they never hurt each other and had a real respect so they were such a great duo!

BRILLIANT At 15:20 Heenan "He[Piper]'s gonna strike" Maher "And i'm not dropping my pants in front of other men" Piper "then how did you get the job" It's pathetic how the audience gasps with hottor or go ooo that their god maher got insulted, while they burst out laughing, rather than just bursts out laughing like they do when Maher mocks anybody else .

Actually although Bill didn't respect the "Use to have horse and buggies and now they have cars" analogy is very accurate considering very few died in horse and buggy accidents as compared to cars. Times change for better or worse. her analogy was spot on.

I haven't been a wrestling fan since I was a kid. But anybody that knows anything about wrestling knows those guys are committed and passionate about what they do. They work their asses off and their are some amazing athletes in wrestling. One of my best friends neck was broken in the 80s when WWF was huge because he got piledrived by another one of my friends. But he doesn't blame wrestling, he's smart enough to know that kids are kids and do dumb shit regardless of what they are exposed to. People used to get riled up about wrestling because a lot of kids used to get hurt but you have to explain to kids that these moves are choreographed like a dance and not real. Blaming violence on entertainment is fucking ridiculous.
