Such a badass well rounded runner. How could anyone knock him.He put up 220 plus yards against #4 ranked boise state. Somebody commented his speed he ran a 4.45 40 at 220 lbs! Coming through traffic he has natural instinct to cover the ball watch 1:06! He so young, Chargers going to get more football out of him. He should be a senior. Can you imagine what kind of numbers he would have put up as a senior.
Dude is strong. He's either breaking tackles til he's run out of bounds, breakin tackles to break it loose for a touchdown, or layin his head and shoulders down and running you over. Watch again if you didn't notice. Also, he has a killer stiff arm
I know, I just haven't seen a small back with the ability to drop a limp shoulder/absorb would be tacklers like Sanders did until I started watching tape of Best. In all honesty I believe he has something that the NFL has not seen in a back in years.
@chargerblue2 they played boise state,winsconsin..and cinci....and if u look at the stats those were his some of his best games.......he know how to get up in play at another level is wat that shows he should do the same in the NFL
he lookz pretty beast...statz are on point...good vison, cutz and knowz when to put the burnerz on...one thing that standz out alot are no fumblez in college...thatz off the khain...hope he komez thru for us...(wat a coincidence number he sport'n in college)...
this guy reads and is through the hole faster than anyone in the draft by far. a little concerned by the strength of opponents for fresno state but they did say the same thing about LT
He reminds me of a faster, but not as physical version of Ronnie Brown. He has excellent patience and incredible vision. He can set up blocks and hit's it with great acceleration and speed.
Everytime they played a decent D they're always behind in this highlight, he really was the ONLY threat on this team. granted a Heisman threat, but none the less, the only threat. Beast right here though, SD will love him
As long as he stays healthy I think he'll be a great addition. Fortunately for him there isn't as much pressure on him as some people are implying. Last year LT had truly declined and the Chargers running game was really weak and they still ended really strong in the regular season. I just hope for the Chargers sakes that they address some of their defensive issues with the rest of the draft, particularly the D line.
They just interviewed him on xx1090 and he said he wouldn't wear #21 as he did at Fresno. Hope the chargers made a good choice... though this guy has had some injuries...best of luck chargers.
@veilz2 Yep. I live in a Suburb of Sac. I hate the raiders but I like the San Fran 49ers. But this guy is a great prospect to see if he can live up to what LT did in SD.
I love his highlight film. It isn't just hitting a wide open hole and out running everyone. He runs through, around, and over multiple tacklers and then outruns everyone. Something he'll have to do in SD because that line can't open up holes for shit.
I think Swaping 2nd round picks with the seahawks was a very smart move by the bolts I can easily see Mathews falling on the chargers lap in round 2. Damn I was hoping he would somehow drop to the Texans in the 2nd round.
Ryan, congratulations on being selected by the San Diego Chargers in the 2010 NFL Draft. I know that you are excited and looking forward to August when you enter Qualcomm Stadium for the first time to host...Da Bears. Hey, at least you didn't have to go far to your next job. Best of luck and peace out.
Wow, is this the 2nd coming of LT or what? This guy can catch, run, cut back, looks like a homerun type runner too(he knows how to score). If he turns out to be an LT clone or better, wow, I'd say the Bolts got it right again. For some reason, they always score some good RB's (Natrone Means, Michael Turner, LT, Sproles, now Matthews). We'll see, but can't wait for the season to start already. I wish it was September already!!
Why did the Chargers feel they had to move up that far for Mathews? According to one league source, San Diego was convinced the No. 15 Giants were all over Mathews and ready to pounce. You can argue the Chargers might have given up too much to climb the 16 spots, but I say it's a luxury the stunning Whitehurst trade afforded them.
DK, his a great runner I think he is the best rb in this years draft I would pick him over spiller. And we could trade up to get him But I would like to keep all our picks.
Big shoes to fill!! Go Ryan!! LOOK OUT AFC. Here come the chargers!! One or 2 good picks in the drift and this time is going only farther into the playoff!! Go Chargers Go!!!! San Diego Super Chargers!!!!!!
He is a hell of a player and i think he is going to do good in the N.F.L.. but I would like it more if he protected the ball. Because if he carries it with one arm he is going to get stripped alot in the League..
this is the running back i wanted for the chargers and now we got him, mathews has a tremendous upside, he is going to be a great running back for a long time, welcome to the Chargers
I already mentioned K. Wilson as an option. I would love E. Thomas but he will probably gone by pick 20. We can get a decent corner in the second. Maybe Patrick Robinson.
You know what I like most about Fresno State...it's fuckin Pat Hill man. I've been to so many Bulldog games. He freakin runs down the sideline everytime a running back breaks it. Seen him do that with Wright, Sumlin, Mathis and Matthews. That coach is so fiery!! I bet he lost a lot of weight last year with Matthews there. lol!!
Blount was running behind the most inexperienced O-line in D-1 football on that hideous blue turf. but he's a 240lb back with 4.5 speed...that's why the pro's love him. these guys are completely different types. Matthews ran a 4.45 right? that's pretty good for a 220lb guy Matthews looks like a star though. both are great prospects
Too bad they didn't show the end of the New Mexico bowl highlights where they gave the ball the Mathews 4 times in a row at the 1 and he could not get in.... plus he is injury prone. He is a beast when he is healthy though, no doubt!
I just dropped this goon for Tashard Choice. What a beautiful 1st round investment this year in RM24! Thank goodness for Arian Foster and Philip Rivers this season. If I ever see Ryan Mathews, I'm going to ask him to pay me $100.00 for his wasted talents. Maybe next year someone will be suckered into drafting you. Just not me.
wow ..balance speed and power..i dont know about any1 else but he is exactly what i would create if i could design a running back for my team- great video
@matilack Haha totally agree with you man and i'm a texans fan just have Slaton lose 20 lbs so he can play at the same weight he did when he was a rookie and go back to being elusive and quick as hell but honestly i want taylor mays that guys an athletic freak thats the whole reason we drafted Mario and he turned out to be a monster imagine being a running back having to take the ball and run at Mays, Cushing, Demeco, and Polard that would suck
As a charger fan, im pretty confident in these RB's in the draft... Spiller will be gone early Even if Mathews gets taken before 28th, we'll have Best who is a hell of a back, but i would be kinda scared about injuries and stuff like that
I'm a Raiders fan and I'm from Fresno and I used to watch Ryan Mathews play at Fresno State, so not all Raiders fans dislike Ryan Mathews he's a Stud, but plays for a weak o-line, that can't block if their lives depended on it! Just give him another year or two and he'll be a great running back, if that line stays healthy and holds up well enough to let Ryan Mathews Shine!
Along with Sproles in the backfield, can't touch this! Allowing Rivers to have more time in the pocket, keeping the Defense on the edge. Let's Go Chargers!
@gameboydude98 Jacob Hester already has that number every number in the 20's in gone beside 21. 20-Antoine Cason 22-Jacob Hester 23-Quentin Jammer 24-Dante Hughes 25-Kevin Ellison 26-Brandon Highes 27-Paul Oliver 28-Steve Gregory 29-Marcus Mason and 30 and 31 are taken by strickland and vasher so my guess is he will be 34 or something like that
This guy will definitely make an impact this year. Another RB stud for the Chargers. The right timing for them, a future hall of famer was let go in LT, and now here comes a star in the making.
@Rochabp exactly dude, if the texans pick him I think it would be a mistake since their thin at corner. And he fits exactly into our system not mention that he wants to play for the chargers he wears 21 because of his idol LT how sweet would it be for mathews to come play for us. He can't wear 21 though.
I think the texans are going to skip on methews since they have bigger needs. If mathews is there at 28 there is no way the chargers are going to skip on him, people say we need a nose tackle but it doesn't matter we still have the 8th pick in the 2nd round plus the third and we're super stacked in next years draft we have one first, two 2nds possibly, and two 3rds. While picking mathews at 28, we won't have to worry about our needs, like the texans.
CB is a major priority but after haden all the CB's drop off greatly, we wouldnt be gettin good value at 20 if we take a CB, so much depth we're gona get a corner in the 2nd or 3rd.. Mathews is great value for a position of need in the 1st we lost 2 games bcuz of our inept RB's last season, that woulda meant playoffs even with the CB's we had last year, so RB is more of a need
sorry to burst ya bubble but my Texans eyeing Mathews pretty hard.. yes we need a CB bad but theres not one worth takin with the 20th pick plus the this draft has a ton of depth corner, we're gettin one 2nd or 3rd at the latest
Not to be picky but his 40 time would be 4.45 and LT's was somewhere around that. If he, or anyone, ran a 40 in 3.47 that would be insane. Bo still holds the record at 4.1.
looks kind of like a mix between all the rb's we've had lately (chargers) a mix between LT, Turner and lightning bug. i hope our GM actually keeps him though freakin bastard trades brees and 2 years later a super bowl. I say if the Chargers are gonna trade a member of the team it should be the GM he blows. but yeah welcome Ryan Mathews hope you can get us our first ring!
damn show his a lil more respect then that hes faster and just as strong of a runner as dwyer in fact i bet matthews goes early first ahead of dwyer and after spiller
i love how he personally owned boise i hate boise every year they are like oh we are so good but their schedule is always ridiculously easy their schedule was a joke only good team was oregon and they beat em when oregon was losing all over the place not when they started winning, but anyway this guy dominates
@jdlund trades happen rather split second sometimes, for all we know 10 other teams were on the phone about to get that pick and pick mathews, we just don't fucking know
Such a badass well rounded runner. How could anyone knock him.He put up 220 plus yards against #4 ranked boise state. Somebody commented his speed he ran a 4.45 40 at 220 lbs! awesome debut yesterday.
Dude is strong. He's either breaking tackles til he's run out of bounds, breakin tackles to break it loose for a touchdown, or layin his head and shoulders down and running you over. Watch again if you didn't notice. Also, he has a killer stiff arm
love the way he waits for his blockers before pushing the turbo button.....CHARGERS BABY!!!! SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS DRAFT PICK
im a san diego chargers fan and this guy will be a good addition to the team
No this song fits the tempo of the highlights and its in Sync with the plays more than the older one
I know, I just haven't seen a small back with the ability to drop a limp shoulder/absorb would be tacklers like Sanders did until I started watching tape of Best. In all honesty I believe he has something that the NFL has not seen in a back in years.

Very nice video -- it's been added to our collection of favorite highlights.
this guy reads and is through the hole faster than anyone in the draft by far. a little concerned by the strength of opponents for fresno state but they did say the same thing about LT
He reminds me of a faster, but not as physical version of Ronnie Brown. He has excellent patience and incredible vision. He can set up blocks and hit's it with great acceleration and speed.
there is something about him that i like i hope he becomes great
Everytime they played a decent D they're always behind in this highlight, he really was the ONLY threat on this team. granted a Heisman threat, but none the less, the only threat. Beast right here though, SD will love him

THE LAST RUN WAS BEAST!
@veilz2 Yep. I live in a Suburb of Sac. I hate the raiders but I like the San Fran 49ers. But this guy is a great prospect to see if he can live up to what LT did in SD.

@jdlund LT ran a 4.38 but for a guy of Mathews size 4.45 is pretty quick, but he'll get faster and stronger in the NFL. Man I can't wait!!!!
I think Swaping 2nd round picks with the seahawks was a very smart move by the bolts I can easily see Mathews falling on the chargers lap in round 2. Damn I was hoping he would somehow drop to the Texans in the 2nd round.
i willmiss him on saturdays and but ill see himon sunday
@rhcp4lifee
Song is Joe Budden - In my Sleep Instrumental , not sure if it was originally sampled from something else.
Ryan Mathews will wear 33!!!! he said it at his press conference today!
i like him cause he runs right through those shoe tackles unlike current LT where if a pinky touches him he goes down.
Ryan, congratulations on being selected by the San Diego Chargers in the 2010 NFL Draft. I know that you are excited and looking forward to August when you enter Qualcomm Stadium for the first time to host...Da Bears. Hey, at least you didn't have to go far to your next job. damn mathews is going to be a beast at SD. Chargers look Super Bowl bound now
He ran against some Big 10 teams, played Cincy, and had Boise State in their conference. He had some quality opponents aside from the weak WAC
HONESTLY, seeing the success of past rookie RB's, I'd say he can even post up 1300+ yards this season including 10-12 TD's. This kid is a beast.

Matthews looks like a star though. both are great prospects
great move, but we need to find a way to package another trade to get back into the 2nd round
@ray9175 - oh my bad, but still, very underrated speed for a back his size, all he's thought of is a power back
Welcome back 21!
Too bad they didn't show the end of the New Mexico bowl highlights where they gave the ball the Mathews 4 times in a row at the 1 and he could not get in.... plus he is injury prone. He is a beast when he is healthy though, no doubt!
sweet backround music
THIS GUYS FASTTTTTT GO BOLTZ!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is our year
He's the 2nd best rb behind Cj spiller. I see no reason why he shouldn't go in the top 20 picks.
I just dropped this goon for Tashard Choice. What a beautiful 1st round investment this year in RM24! Thank goodness for Arian Foster and Philip Rivers this season. welcome Ryan..
college's 2nd leading rusher + only a junior = simply amazing
wow ..balance speed and power..i dont know about any1 else but he is exactly what i would create if i could design a running back for my team- great video
@hectroz they are different runs because the score changes everytime there is a boise state highlight
@matilack We can get a good corner in the second or third like Kareem Jackson or Akwasi Owusu-Ansah.
Looks like a Michael Turner To me. Not elite speed but breaks out his his ability to break tackles
chargers this is the year super bowl win!!!!!!!!!!!! nice pick he is the new #21
Great Video
Instumental Matched Perfect.
As a charger fan, im pretty confident in these RB's in the draft...
Spiller will be gone early

20-Antoine Cason
22-Jacob Hester
23-Quentin Jammer
24-Dante Hughes
25-Kevin Ellison
26-Brandon Highes
27-Paul Oliver
28-Steve Gregory
29-Marcus Mason
and 30 and 31 are taken by strickland and vasher so my guess is he will be 34 or something like that
This guy will definitely make an impact this year. Another RB stud for the Chargers. The right timing for them, a future hall of famer was let go in LT, and now here comes a star in the making.
@28condor haha definitely. a 20 game winning streak against them is certainly in reach now.
MrJakeolas brees wasnt traded he went to new orelans as a free agent.
@shortyskeneye
Joe Budden - In My Sleep Instrumental... dont know if it was sampled originally from something else.
Impressive run at 4:40 how he was stride for stride with #10 and broke away from him at the 15 like he was toying with him. Sneaky speed.
He just runs really fast down the field and make people hurt their feelings.
Congrats Bolt fans on getting Ryan. You did give up a lot to get him though, My Texans did well with Ben Tate late in the second.
@Rochabp exactly dude, if the texans pick him I think it would be a mistake since their thin at corner. And he fits exactly into our system not mention that he wants to play for the chargers he wears 21 because of his idol LT how sweet would it be for mathews to come play for us. they'd be sooo sick!! im tryin to tell ppl. doesnt look like thomas will drop that far tho and we never trade up :(
I think the texans are going to skip on methews since they have bigger needs. While picking mathews at 28, we won't have to worry about our needs, like the texans.
holy shit @ 3:16 to 3:24. i got a good feeling about this kid, can't wait to see him rockin the lightning bolts
@THEchrisORORKE I liked it too but I can't change it back it was removed.
CB is a major priority but after haden all the CB's drop off greatly, we wouldnt be gettin good value at 20 if we take a CB, so much depth we're gona get a corner in the 2nd or 3rd.. Mathews is great value for a position of need in the 1st we lost 2 games bcuz of our inept RB's last season, that woulda meant playoffs even with the CB's we had last year, so RB is more of a need
the game vs boise was indeed his coming out party
sorry to burst ya bubble but my Texans eyeing Mathews pretty hard.. yes we need a CB bad but theres not one worth takin with the 20th pick plus the this draft has a ton of depth corner, we're gettin one 2nd or 3rd at the latest
Guys a beast!!!
i place him the 2nd best back in the draft this year, behind Toby Gerhardt
Not to be picky but his 40 time would be 4.45 and LT's was somewhere around that. If he, or anyone, ran a 40 in 3.47 that would be insane. Bo still holds the record at 4.1.
Bam Bam is the shit and once he starts getting more burn and gets a better feel for the game and even with a shitty line he gunna do big things
wlecome to sd.....you are well deserving!!!!!
wow you can tell he got faster when he got older...
looks kind of like a mix between all the rb's we've had lately (chargers) a mix between LT, Turner and lightning bug. i hope our GM actually keeps him though freakin bastard trades brees and 2 years later a super bowl. I say if the Chargers are gonna trade a member of the team it should be the GM he blows. but yeah welcome Ryan Mathews hope you can get us our first ring!
@SDCHARGERS619 Mathews as a Charger. Fingers crossed.
this guy is goin 2 tear it up with the chargers!
damn show his a lil more respect then that hes faster and just as strong of a runner as dwyer in fact i bet matthews goes early first ahead of dwyer and after spiller
i love how he personally owned boise i hate boise every year they are like oh we are so good but their schedule is always ridiculously easy their schedule was a joke only good team was oregon and they beat em when oregon was losing all over the place not when they started winning, but anyway this guy dominates
jahvid is goint to tear it up at the combine and in the pros...jahvid is the best out of all these backs.
If he is on the board at # 34 he will be playing with Kevin Smith next year.
@charger619c
true that, he just had to much pride
San Diego here you come
Man. This guy is a beast. The San Diego Chargers are lucky he may be better than C.J. Spiller.
@jdlund trades happen rather split second sometimes, for all we know 10 other teams were on the phone about to get that pick and pick mathews, we just don't fucking know
Dwyer should be a FB in the NFL, Spiller will be rookie of the year.....period
home town kid, hope you are the real deal, bolts give to much for this guy,
@ballernumber8 33 is perfect...!
chargers u arr so lucky, mathews is insane!
the new song is actually kinda sick.
No one tackles him. They just push him out of bounds.
He's a Charger now
Kid is nice...good pick
