IF Rice hadn’t touched the ball, Veltman would’ve kicked a moving ball. Can’t take a free kick from a moving ball. And by the extreme letter of the law, Veltman touching a stopped ball (his first touch to kick ball into Rice) had restarted the play already. Only we get the most insane decisions ever.
Nudged the ball? It barely made a full rotation….its absolutely ridiculous. No one in their right mind would consider any of what he did worthy of a yellow
James, Rice didn't nick anything. The ball was kicked at him, it was moving. If anything, he pushed it to the side so that Brighton didn't get to move their free kick 5 metres forward.
I am honestly losing interest in the Premier League as I believe the entire thing is rigged. And not in a "the establishment is against Arsenal" kind of way, but rather in a "let's maximize engagement" way. Arsenal's opponents didn't receive obvious red cards in their first two games of the season. You know what will drive maximum engagement? Arsenal getting a red card for a trivial thing.
It was incredibly stupid for Rice to kick the ball away being on a yellow already, but he did also only kick it about half a metre, whereas Pedro kicked it half the length of the pitch in the first half after it goes out and was not booked, so the inconsistency is incredibly annoying. Also, Veltman should absolutely have got a booking at the least if not a straight red for kicking Rice in the leg. Could make the argument it was not fully intentional, but it was certainly reckless then so a minimum of a yellow.
If you're hyper-lenient it's not a red card, and if you're a complete rules pedant it's not a red card. You have to want it to be a red to give that. Lenient: ref has let every one of them go in the game Pedant: by the letter of the law, the free-kick was already taken before Rice nudged the ball.

This week, Kavanaugh made the game all about him and his inconsistency absolutely ruined the game. Surely the Prem cant be happy about that product today. I want an apology from PGMOL!!
The issue with the red is the guy literally kicks it AT Rice to initiate it. Rice’s touch looked more of a reflex to the ball hitting him and getting it out of his way. I’m not even convinced he knew the guy was trying to take it. And of course there’s the issue that it was still moving! Just the whole thing was ridiculous. And one of those decisions that refs just need to be sensible on and if it’s NOT Arsenal they always are. But when it’s us they just find ways to do these absurd things. It’s maddening.
The ball was rolling as the guy tried to take a quick free kick so the action before Declan toed it should have been blown up if you go purely by the letter of the law
Plus he was trying to take the free kick ten yards away from where the free kick had been awarded. A decent ref uses common sense and warns both players about their future conduct.
Here are are the problems with that Red Card 1. Brighten player kicked a dead ball up behind Rice - which means 'by letter of the law' play had restarted 2. Rice has no idea the Brighton played is about to kick it as he does not have eyes in the back of his head. 3. Yes rice taps the ball 6 inches to the right - but Paolo fella kicked the ball half the length of the pitch in the first half with no punishment - so the ref had set the bar there 4. The ball was still rolling when the brighten player went to kick it, so in fact, if the original kicking the dead ball was not restoring play, Rice was NOT delaying the play as he tapped a rolling ball 5. The Brighton player gets away with a free kick on their opponent 6. Because the ball is rolling, and there for not 'by letter of the law' allowed to be kicked to restart play, booking Rice for delaying play is a clear and obvious error. 7. Because it is a clear and obvious error, VAR should have got involved and over turned it. 8. Once overturned the Brighton player should have been booked for kicking his opponent. 9. And this the most egregious, Kavanaugh, if he had his mask removed like some Scooby doo skit, would in fact reveal he is actually Mike Dean in disguise. Edit for spelling
One other problem. Free kick was not taken from the actual spot of the foul. By 'the letter of the law' should have never been allowed in the first place.

C’mon how many times do professional footballers take a free kick in their own third while sitting on their arse? Just crazy reffing as you put so calmly James.
I mean, do we even need referees at this point? I’m sure someone could build a random decision generator fairly easily that would do much the same job, and for considerably less money. Or, if you wanted to add a bit of theatre, maybe we could make the captains go to the sideline at random intervals and spin some kind of giant wheel of fortune for decisions, complete with flashing lights and music? Obviously the Wheel / generator would still be allowed to go out and officiate midweek games in the UAE to top up its income.
Should touching a moving ball before a free kick taken deep in their own half on the sideline be a second yellow? The best league in the world says so!
In an era where the margins are so tight, these two points dropped hurt more than they should because we’ve seen this film before. Last season, the poor decisions had us drop 2 points to Newcastle, which ended up with us losing the league by 2 points. PGMOL are ruining the league.
Im just fed up with these kind of decisions especially as Manchester City very rarely get these kind of decisions go against them which makes everything more infuriating.... corruption? Wouldn't surprise me with these referees

Biggest problem with Rices red card, who plays left 8 next match???? No Rice, no Merino! Back to Havertz??? Against the spuds??? Nooooo thank you. Could have massive repercussions
James, it's not nothing. I'm tired of hand waving away violent conduct. Weltman deserves a red for straight up booting Rice. Whoever it was who went in high and luckily didn't break Odegaard's knee deserves a red too. Rice barely deserves one yellow, let alone two. Tapping a ball to the side when an opponent rolls it at you isn't fucking 'gamesmanship,' it isn't time wasting. What are we even talking about here?
I don't want to be the negative guy, but I just can't she what's so great about Havertz. I can't see it, I've tried. He is just Mr. TangleFoot to me. Apart from that, I'm all in.
I was at the game today. Harsh decision for the red card but also naïve from Rice. He should know better than to get sucked into that. Don't react, get on with it. Certainly a learning curve for him. I actually thought Partey was brilliant today. Couple of stray passes but he helped keep the game at 1-1 in that 2nd half. Bit disappointed with Ødegaard today. Havertz was making a series of runs and not getting the service. Also a bit sloppy with the ball in the centre of the pitch. Again Trossard flatters to deceive from the start. I think only he can stop himself becoming an impact sub. With Martinelli's form, I could see Sterling starting from the left quite quickly.
Early last season they held us back with terrible referees but it gets forgotten about at the end. Same again this season we'll be 5-10 points behind city by xmas n have to claw it back again
When competing for the title with a team accused of 115 corruption charges, even a draw feels like a loss. The Red card turned the match on it's head & I don't know why that was a Red. Anyways, let's take the point & move on.
Nothing to do with Partey. Rice has been crap all season. Rice cost us the game and 2 points. If we lose to spurs and city, just remember it started with DECLAN RICE'S STUPIDNESS. Messing up our momentum. He's so over-rated!
You cant beat city they have so many in their pocket its gross. Do you ever see a ref looking to send players off for city games? It just makes you bored of the game when refs are being paid well to throw games in favour. Bring on the super league because the premier league is so riddled open check book decisions. Barrca has refs in their pocket and dominated now its city’s turn.
Nah mate, go and watch that game again, the gunners weren't clinging on Brighton had the ball but couldn't do fck all with it there a bang average team. We should have won,we had the better chances, if we played like Brighton against ten men I'd be fuming!!
I for once would blame the fans in England. If any other team gets this kind of Biased treatment for these many years, do you think they would be quiet like this ? This League treats Arsenal so unfairly yet we never ever react to anything, Whereas City takes them to Court even after committing financial fraud. Maybe time for us to Hit back in someway or the other
I think the chanting aimed at kavanaugh was pretty x-rated. The fans made very clear their disdain for his ineptitude. Chris K - about as much use as a cock flavoured lolly pop.
Let’s be sensible here…. Rice should have been more intelligent to not make the ref have an excuse to send him off and reward his paymasters…the ref couldn’t wait for an excuse. The fact that pedro wasn’t booked first half proves the bias in the ref. What I don’t get is why a referee doesn’t use common sense and just give a talking to the both players. Oh wait!!! Kerchiiing. I’ve seen a player being throttled in the neck and a player being garrotted in other matches this season…. ….if the right decision doesn’t help Man City…then move on…nothing to see here…. Absolute waste of time the premier league is when referees are corrupt and the media lets them be.

Try reading his stats - 3rd on list of all comers in PL for goals and assists in 2024
I was at the game today.
Get Jorginho PLEASE!!!
The ref killed the game, shame.
Very unprofessional of Rice- so stupid as he would have known he was on a yellow.however will no doubt fell the need to makeup for his error🇮🇪🇦🇺
Early last season they held us back with terrible referees but it gets forgotten about at the end. Same again this season we'll be 5-10 points behind city by xmas n have to claw it back again
No? If he restarts the game then its a live ball so that makes no sense.
Unpopular opinion - once fit Sterling starts
Ahead of who?
@@kw3stone Martinelli
When competing for the title with a team accused of 115 corruption charges, even a draw feels like a loss. The Red card turned the match on it's head & I don't know why that was a Red. Anyways, let's take the point & move on.
The same ref that let haven't get choked on the floor against wolves it's a joke
We struggled because we're already carrying one midfielder. Rice can carry partey. Partey can't carry a missing man.
And city won't get these kinds of decisions against them.
Nothing to do with Partey. Rice has been crap all season. Rice cost us the game and 2 points. If we lose to spurs and city, just remember it started with DECLAN RICE'S STUPIDNESS. Messing up our momentum. He's so over-rated!
Did you just compare sterling to benayoun? chalk and cheese james
All that hard work against Villa ruined. Rice will be out for Spurs now FFS.
1-0 to the Arsenal
Sterling , headless, misfiring, bad dribbling Sterling, is playing in my modern Arsenal team? The one I've been waiting for and watch build for the last 4 years. PLAYER WELFARE BAILOUT SAFEPLACE ANTIDEPRESSENT WELLNESS CENTER BULLSHIT
Rice had his pocket picked in a way.
Another struggle with Brighton...
The ball was rolling past Rice, so it could not be a legal free kick, but Rice needed to be more aware and not kick the ball away
Awful performances by both teams, officiating, coaching etc. Long live the 12:30pm kickoffs!
James "at this (present) point in time" McNicholas
We aint winning the league. Haaland just scored his 2nd hattrick in a row. That transfer window was that of a club whose target is top 4. So lets set our expectations accordingly.
