I ended up buying an RX-340, which, sadly, is not in the same class. The "terminal strip" interface on the HF-1000 put me off, and when I tested the 340 at the factory, I listened to 11175 USB. AF1 came on, a jammer dropped on top of it, and it was intuitively obvious how to move the passband around and notch filter, to completely eliminate the jammer. That impressed me a lot -- the ease of use without any experience with it, and the fact that it just worked.
@@michaellewis5921 Great question! The 896 is a DSP radio and the 895 is analog. Functionally for AM/SSB voice signals they are very similar. However the 895 needs an extra option to give you the extra IF bandwidths that come with the 896. The 896 also provides tons more features for digital non- voice modes. Both are very nice radios!
@Chuck Yarbrough, Sensitivity and sound that`s not the only important parameter what a good sw-receiver should have. There are a lot more parameters which much more important like image supression, dynamic range, if-supression or interception point and so on ! 73 de df8??
@@dieselten01 Before the video I was favoring the WJ for voice modes, but after I have to say I really like the audio from the Racal! Still the WJ and R&S are more sensitive and can hear more signals. How’s that for skirting the question?😉
I absolutely agree. There are a number of different factors that can influence what is ‘the best’ radio. In the end I think the context of the signal (mode, DXing vs Program listening, personal audio presentation preferences) makes the choice of one ‘best’ pretty subjective. The right tool for the right job seems appropriate!
@@KI4BZJ i remember the WJ 817 has a 16 khz. Since it is all software controlled it might be that you can let your wj 1000 have the same 16 khz bandpass
You said that the AGC attenuates the signal. Is it possible to adjust the time window on the Racal's AGC? Or remove the AGC from the passband just using the manual RF Gain? Thanks Matt! Yes, I like the sound of the Racal as well. Yes, I have an RG52a and a 53a. They are great machines once you get past the ‘free flowing’ main tuning dial. I’m used to a little drag when I turn the knobs!

They are beasts! All about the handles. I used to have a Panny RF-3100. It got me the QSL cards.
I like them all mate - but love the Watkins Johnson 😃
The HF 1000A sounds very nice
W&J for me. Love de display and analog meter
The WJ HF1000A sounded the nicest to me, but gee I like that R&S!
Nice comparison and one heck of a nice stack 'o' radios!
I will start investing in these...all very nice
O wish Passport to WB Radio was still with us. I like that small Sony to WB Radio book.

Wondering what the differences are (besides the size) between the EK 896 and the EK 895?
