    Fascinating. Thank you for your counter-argument to modern dog training.

      Hi Dean, Thanks for your comment. I hope this helps people who feel like failures when they simply can't seem to get anywhere using only "positive" reinforcement training.

    Sounds very sensible. Our puppy is now 3 months old, a Welsh springer spaniel. We live in a suburb of Gothenburg Sweden, the 2nd largest city in the country, so everytime we go out there are some people and dogs, which I guess makes your method rather impossible here. It is rather straining, especially with an outgoing breed like spaniel, who gets all excited about greeting eveyone.
    Now we are in our sommar cottage on the countryside, few people or dogs here, it's just so peaceful with our puppy inside and around the house, mostly unleashed even if we walk to the lake and such. But as soon as people are somewhere there, we must quickly put the leash/ harness on and keep check on her since she leaps rushing to greet and check things out.

      You bring up a fantastic point! I encourage you to do a lot of leash training and "obedience" training inside your house. "Walk" your puppy at home while in the country in your own yard, while in the city inside your home. Play games with your puppy, the come and go game, etc to build a bond. Condition responses in a controlled environment. That will be the title of my next video so watch for it. You can make great progress even in your situation. You puppy is really young and too young to be reliable but you can lay a foundation now. I had a 1/2 springer 1/2 shorthair and she was one of the best dogs I ever had. Thank you so much for your comment!

    Absolutely the best training video. He is such a good boy,! You've made so many good points. However, I DO LIVE in a commune!!! An RV park where there are people and dogs everywhere. But that doesn't mean that Ellie gets to do whatever she wants on leash. She's 1 1/2 yrs old. Still lots of curious puppy behavior, but such a well behaved dog on leash. Thanks Sheila; so glad I found you!

    Absolutely fascinating video. I actually think I'm gonna consider what you say to be correct. You make a ton of sense.
    I agree with your opinion about meeting strangers, and do that with my dog.
    Alas, I think most of us who want to implement your philosophy have "older" dogs. Mine is 18 months now.
    I would love your thoughts, or a video, about how to rewind if possible 😂
    Can we start over?
    If so, what would you suggest?
    I sure hope there's a way we can!! 😊

    • @dreamgaits

      As long as there is breath in your dog you can "rewind" but you can't totally erase the tape. I go through this with damaged (and I am not suggesting your dog is damaged) horses we rescue. What might take two weeks to train something to a colt will take a lot more time with a horse with a history. You can't really undo bad habits the dog has practiced but you can teach new behaviors to replace those bad habits. Bad habits are taught. You must remember this. So you have to change what YOU are doing to change your dog. I did a video on this a long time ago. Search my channel. I think it is called "change yourself to change your dog" or something like this. I will address this a bit in my pressure and release video #2. I strongly suggest you follow that series. I just posted #1 the other dog. GREAT comment. Thanks!

    Outstanding! Bernie is absolutely amazing. So steady and calm, especially at his stage of puppyhood. I will really miss him; your Bernie videos have been so much fun!

      He is simply a reflection of how he is raised and trained. (-: I will miss him too.

    Bernie is such a good boy! From a prior video of yours we had to get our mini a do not pet people were always running up to her. I still have to stay in front of her sometimes. It sure changed all the issues we were having once we did that. I loved the kid way of looking at it & so true. My dogs are trained to come when I whistle & here they came from your whistle also, just laughed. Thanks for all these great videos so helpful. I will miss seeing Bernie, he's gonna be a great service dog!!

      Hi Tricia, Isn't it amazing how a dog will relax once it realizes you are not going to let every Tom,Dick and Harry come touch it? Thanks for the comment.

    I'm really enjoying your videos. Would it be possible to do a video for training a rescue dog?

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits  หลายเดือนก่อน

      No different than training any other dog except you might have some baggage to deal with. Not all "rescue" dogs are the same so it would be hard to tell you how to train a dog I know nothing about. The first step is to stop calling it a "rescue" because that evokes pity and will interrupt your ability to train it.

    When you are talking about old approach, are you referring to dominance-based approach compare to current positive reinforcement method? Would it also fit to Shiba breed? I heard that they are hard to train in the old way, wdyt?

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I actually used to show Shiba Inu's in AKC conformation. They were very easy to train for show but conformation show is mostly food food food, baiting and training the dog to stand and beg for food. But they are wearing a slip collar and must respond to the pressure (release of pressure) so I don't see why a Shiba can't learn using this method. It isn't the "old" way, it is really the natural and time tested way to train a dog.
