How to Make a Music Video Using Final Cut Pro's Multicam Feature

- In this tutorial, I show you how to shoot and edit together a music video in Final Cut Pro, by combining different takes from a single camera, or footage from multiple cameras. It's actually a very easy process to combine and sync all of the different clips and then select which ones you want to feature throughout the video. Final Cut Pro X has all the necessary tools built right in, and so I show you just how it's done by walking you through one of my own music videos.

Pretty much how id figured it myself so great to see that it looks to be correct! One thing - i put the audio track in with the video clips - not at the end - so it stays as part of the multicam. It syncs up perfectly. You can then muted the audio on the video angles, and designate the audio file as the only audio source. Seems to work for me. The B roll thing was what i was looking how to do. Seems simple. Obviously veen overthinking it myself!

Thanks! How about collage playback, showing more than one, maybe three or four, then zoom in out of different playing vids in the collage of vids, depending on focus.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, music videos lend themselves well to split/multiple screens. That's easily accomplished in Final Cut Pro. You basically include multiple clips above each other in the timeline. You then resize (rescale) each clip to make them smaller, and move (transform) them around in the window so that they show together in whatever arrangement you desire.

Awesome...Just hearing your intro talking about MTV, etc. was really cool. I too was 14 in 9th grade (in 1982) and remember all of it very well. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Oh yeah, great job on the video too! 😎 Curious why you didn't sync the main audio track along with the camera clips at the same time.
Ha! Yes, we grew up in an amazing time and it was really cool to be young during that pivotal age. Regarding the audio track, I honestly can't remember. For some reason, it seemed to work better to add the original track back later once I have all the clips edited and in place. Next time I do a video, I'll pay attention to this and let you know the reason. Have you tried shooting music videos?
Thank you for the reply and the awesome video! I just started using multi cam in FCP, so still learning different techniques. Cool song by the way and awesome job putting it all together. I have not ever tried a music video. That’s a whole new skill set I would need to learn. For now I will just sit back and appreciate the hard work that you and others put into them and be entertained! Some of my favorite music/concert videos were from Van Halen in the Roth days. Man, I miss those days!! 😎😎😎

Hi Dan, your tutorial made sense and was easy to follow however when I followed the steps as shown, once it was done loading it had put all the clips in one after the other with one of the clips synced with the audio track for the song

thanks a lot for the video, but is it possible to show more than one Multicam angle at the same time, if you have a band you can show 2 or 3 different musicians at the same time...
Hey there, thanks for your comment. I don't know how you can do this when creating the original Multicam angles, but you can always do it later, by putting specific clips above the timeline (like I do for the B roll clips) and do a Transform on each one so that you can make the other band member clips smaller in a way that they'll all fit on the screen as "Brady Bunch" boxes. Does that make sense?
Thanks for the tips but I only have one camera and found having the audio at a level for camera pick the singer sings and embellishes the song on different takes and I can’t match the song levels on camera audio and it sounds different when I add the separate audio…any tips?
Hmmm... that can be tricky. One option would be to record a separate video, or even just an audio track of your singer. That way you could pick up all those embellishments that the camera isn't getting. And, if there's ever a time when you just can't get a section of the video and audio to lock up, just stick in some B-Roll or other footage for those brief moments. That also keep things exciting for the viewer. Hope that helps! Let me know if either of those work for you.

Any of those audio formats will work when editing. However, for final output, it may depend on what your final destination is for the video. For example, TH-cam automatically converts to 48K. Of course, most people will never hear a difference between 44.1, 48 and 96K audio.
I wish it were that easy using the software I use on the PC. If it were I may get more creative with my videos. For my videos where you see me play guitar I feed music from my DAW into my phone as the external audio source and record a live take of the guitar to video and a new audio track to my DAW. I then mix the final mix down and sync to the video.
Most of the time when I'm doing short videos, like stuff for IG reels, I just recorded the video of my playing with my phone or the camera, while running the actual sound into Logic. Then I export the final audio, bring it into Final Cut Pro and then sync it up manually by matching the initial transients. It's only when I shoot multiple takes that I use this method I describe in the video.
What are you using for your DAW?
@@DanBaileyPhoto that is what I do, but I also end up with a copy on my phone with direct audio from the DAW.
I am PC based and use Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio as my DAW and HitFilm Express for video. I use Blender, Chaotica, Mandelbulber, and Particle Illusion for my animations.
Your animations are amazing. That's something I have absolutely no experience with. It's so over my head, I simply cannot even imagine how you do that stuff! 😆
Hey, enjoyed your tutorial. Does Final Cut allow a split screen option? So, if I was playing piano and guitar to a backing track, can it show me playing both to the audio?
Yes! You can do it even while editing a Multicam clip! On your timeline select the region where you want to have both the angles to appear on the screen. Click that selected region [say the one you are playing the piano] and option/click drag up that clip to have it above the timeline as a connected clip. Go to the beginning of the clip, and, change the clip on the TIMELINE [this one would be that of your playing the piano] to the camera angle that shows you playing the guitar. Now you have the two clips one above another, and create a split screen of your desire to show you playing both piano and guitar simultaneously. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your comment. Without seeing your project, I don't know exactly what's going on. Is the sound universally off for the entire project, or just for some of the video clips? Can you drag and adjust the audio file manually to make it line up?
