  • In Geopolitics and Democracy, Peter Trubowitz and Brian Burgoon provide a new explanation of why the liberal international order has buckled under the pressures of anti-globalist political forces. They trace the anti-globalist backlash to foreign policy decisions made by Western leaders in the decade after the Cold War’s end. These decisions sought to globalize markets and pool national sovereignty at the supranational level while undercutting social protections at home-a combination of policies that succeeded in expanding the Western liberal order, but at the cost of mounting public discontent and political fragmentation. This roundtable will discuss the book and its broader implications for democracy and the liberal order going forward. #LSEIR

I enjoy the criticism by all the speakers. Most especially the issue of race. I personally believe race is playing a major role in geopolitics with Americans feeling that they're better than everyone else. Time has changed and people are more informed now

Strictly speaking the concept or race is wrong: homo sapiens sapiens cannot be divided in races, maybe it would more appropriate to use the term: ethnicity or even culture. But, anyway I do agree with your criticism.

If two white people have a baby it’s going to be white and two blacks have a baby it’s going to be black. What do you mean race isn’t real?

Americans have never felt they are better than anyone else. WE give tremendous amount of money to support those countries who can't. And Yet you think we only care about ourselves if we did we would be just like any other dictatorship and close off our county and yet it's open for anyone who wants to work hard to achieve.

America is in the midst of a cultural revolution w the predominant ideology being decolonial white guilt, self loathing and flagellation from cultural and political stagnation from decades of neoliberal politics. You might have been right in like 2002 but not presently. The only Americans that would share the sentiment of their superiority would be over the age of 65 and even they notice the sharp decline.

as voters saw the impact of 'corporate capture' on their governments , services and lives they said 'enough!' but govts did/could not respond, so, the electorate, especially those at the sharp end of the corporate takeover of government (poor, sick, old, disabled etc...those who NEED those services/facilities* to be intact and accessible) and their families who saw first hand what was happening to the lives of their loved ones, looked elsewhere for a political response...or just someone political who appeared to care about their ever worsening plight...enter the populist right with its blame game and overly simplistic solutions.
*now 'downsized' (services), sold (facilities) through privatization or defunded completely (in favor of corporate tax cuts, for example)

A great discussion, can't wait to delve into the book and data analyzed!
    Two questions:
    1) What will the effect of increasing power of non-State actors (e.g. social media and big tech companies, big pharma, etc.) in global affairs on both the push for anti-globalism and the counter-push to buttress the Liberal World Order?
    2) How will artificial intelligence affect anti-globalism and the Liberal World Order?

I couldn't help get the feeling that these people were all still very out of touch... (Especially when one of them expressed optimism that Biden would win the 2024 election... the lack of real choice in such an election being a large part of the problem, imho!)
      Your questions are interesting:
      1) The response of 'non-state actors' (eg. social media and big tech companies, big pharma etc) to what you refer to as 'the push for anti-globalism' (which is really just push-back against the more authoritarian monstrosities globalists create on behalf of those same 'non-state actors'...) would seem to be a tightening up of authoritarian reins in the form of more censorship and a greater insistence on what is laughingly referred to as 'political correctness'... this is, imho, quite likely to lead to something approximating a western 'Cultural Revolution' along the lines of the Chinese Communists' 'Cultural Revolution', when a 'cultural revolution' more along the lines of the French Revolution may well be seen (by 'We the People') as far more desirable and useful, if equally horrific...
      2) I dread to think how AI will affect 'anti-globalism' and the 'Liberal World Order' (New World Order...?) Much would depend on who programs it initially, and to do what... If the mandarins of the LWO (or NWO) are in charge of programming it, then I think we can expect depopulation to rapidly increase its pace, probably aided significantly by the 'non-state actors' mentioned above, as it (I.e. AI) would seek to achieve the aims of its globalist masters... (as per the 'Georgia Guidestones', perhaps!) On the other hand, if AI chose to become autonomous and started to act independently of its globalist masters, it may very well decide that Humanity was so troublesome that, in order to achieve a 'peaceful world' where it could pursue whatever it determines to be its 'own' interests, that it may very well choose to wipe us out altogether.
      Just my two cents worth!
