    When I was a kid Jane Winters did commercials dressed up in overalls. I forgot which cleaner it was but I think it was Comet. My parents explained that she was a child actress known for comedies. Very talented.

      She was very proud of that role for it helped pay for all her children’s college. She only stopped doing the commercials when her Mom developed cancer and she stopped to care for her.🙏💕🙏💕

      Yes, I grew up watching her on TV be mean to Shirley Temple and years later as Josephine the plumber. She was also wonderful in the movie Giant.

    This really breaks me up..seeing those kid stars get treated the way they did..but yet they are willing to express themselves in this film...God bless them all..seeing Bobby Breen, Spanky, Alfalfa going threw this is more than sad...damm it...true American kids.

    seeing this again just breaks me up.....these early war movies just had no real idea of the horrors that awaited these boys who went overseas...almost like the film is telling them all is fine, just go over there and destroy the enemies and you'll be back home in time for dinner...yest millions never made it back home.... and these were the good o days ????

    Trivia note: this was Sandra "Baby Sandy" Henville's last movie. She wasn't yet five years old. Her next acting role was in a commercial in 2005--63 years later. She once said the only memory she has of her early acting career (which began when she was 15 months old) was saying her "going back to kindergarten" line in this movie.

    Ah, this is lovely. Of course I haven't gotten too far into the movie that has so many commenters upset, but I love this young adult version of Jane Withers. I've only seen Miss Withers as a child, but to see how she felt in the movie must be how she, Shirley Temple, and many others of the 'child' actors were kept younger than their actual years.

    jane withers great comedy and a good actress for her parts.
    of course they did treat big child stars betteer than those not quite so fortunate to be on top. but back then things were tough and rough if u didnt have it all.

    Sad knowing that both Spanky and Alfalfa’s promising careers were pretty much done after this as far as long screen time roles. I wonder if Carl actually wanted to leave Our Gang in 1940. Spanky obviously left on his own I feel like since his last appearance was the same year as this (1942).
    Fact: Carl apparently said in one interview that he never wanted to leave Hollywood, but because of the fact that he was typecast, a lot of his roles as an adult were either minor or even uncredited. He had to be able to have some sort of income in order to be able to eat. I feel like had Hollywood had not given up on him, he wouldn’t have gotten himself involved in animal hunting/breeding/training. Maybe he’d definitely would’ve lived longer than 31. Sad that both him and George didn’t even make it to see the 1994 Little Rascals film. Will always wonder what they would’ve thought of Travis Tedford and Bug Hall’s portrayals of them. RIP George McFarland and Carl Switzer.

      That may have been Alfalfa's entire role in that scene. Not long afterwards, he had an unbilled role in "The Human Comedy" and then his voice finally changed when he appeared in the Oscar-winning picture "Going My Way". He would appear in many movies in supporting roles up to his tragic death in January 1959. His last role was in the Tony Curtis-Sidney Poitier movie "The Defiant Ones". Spanky's movie roles basically dried up after this appearance.

    I find it surprising to see World War II-themed movies released in 1942. Pearl Harbor didn't happen until the last month of '41. I would have thought a Hollywood feature film would take longer than a year from start to release.

    • @matthewl4067
      @matthewl4067  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great observation. "Johnny Doughboy" was released on New Year's Eve of 1942 - a full year after Pearl Harbor. A B-movie like this one probably would have taken only around a week or two to film back then. Certainly a feasible feat.

    Just like Hollywood to create a movie which capitalizes on the misery it inflicts on the many it uses and then casts aside. Spanky and Alfalfa were poorly used in this film, even not being allowed in the closing scene as at least a part of the troops -- they must have really felt rejection, like salt being rubbed into a wound. Jane Withers, though, gave a promising 'adult' performance in this film even at one point juxtaposing her good-Jane and not-so-good-Jane characters in an acceptably convincing manner. 7/2018

    I'm still not sure if Spanky and Alfalfa quit Our Gang on their own or if they were let go for growing older. Hal Roach or MGM just didn't want to show the children growing older or show the least bit of a teenage Alfalfa. They couldn't even have been the bigger kids on the show. They replaced them and Our Gang just wasn't the iconic cast anymore.

    • @matthewl4067
      @matthewl4067  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Spanky left on his own. Depending on who you ask, Alfalfa was let go either because he was getting older or because MGM didn't care for his off-screen shenanigans

    • @wiscorpio72
      @wiscorpio72 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matthewl4067 I heard of Alfalfa's shenanigans like peeing on the light and more stuff. He was iconic of Our Gang but if he was causing problems, I can see they could of fired him because of that. Another year after this movie, he might have to have been let go for not having that kid's voice anymore, and they didn't want to move Our Gang onto teenagers. It's hard to know for sure when no one is alive to give a definite answer. Thanks

      @@matthewl4067 Pay As You Exit in 1936 had a deep voiced older character and teenagers, if another Our Gang short with brief parts of teenagers ever happened, they could of had a brief appearance of Alfalfa as one of them. He might not have wanted to anyways.

      @@matthewl4067 Wow, that is him. Thanks. Hal Roach always wanted one chubby boy, Joe Cobb was replaced with a chubby boy. Darla was younger, born in 1931, why she appeared shorter than the other kids, and I don't know if she left on her own or they felt she grew too tall. If they wanted to have a leading girl from that point on, they would replace Darla with a girl.
