- Back to where it all started; flying gliders!
Today I’ll be taking you along on a cross-country flight together with my friend Maurits.
Maurits learnt how to fly gliders at the age of 14 and has accumulated more than 700 hours since.
Join us on a 3 hour cross-country in the beautiful Duo-Discus; an ultimate high-performance glider with a compact “hidden” sustainer engine. Do we make it home without using it?…

Awesome, I learnt to fly a very long time ago when I was 17. I’m still at it professionally some 45 years later but unbelievably I’ve never flown a glider or a turbo prop. I guess there’s more I’m going to have to try and do before it’s to late!
Hey, this is how I started too! Teaching Air Cadets in the Grob 103 and 109. Glider pilots make better pilots!
This channel is going to explode in no time. Such a great content!
I agree!!!
I love watching your videos. Your smile and laugh are infectious. Thanks and safe flying !
Hi Bambi, I like your wonderful cross country flying adventure by the GLIDDER Flight. You are great Bambi
No better sound than the variometer beeping faster! I started with gliding at 15 too, I miss it so much!
Infernal machines. There is nothing worse than these sound polluters beeping away all day. You have a variometer gauge to look at. A slightly more pleasing tone would be ok, but not beeping three times a second. Bloody things.
fingerhorn4 good thing we can mute them
To fly in a glider is just awesome. Because you constantly feel like the air is carrying you.Thank you for sharing! Rosita, and many thanks for the live stream on Sunday with Petter. It was beautiful!
That is absolutely true I have flown today a glider lesson with a instructor in the evening from 18:25-18:29 at the HAC Boberg it is a Gliderclub in Hamburg Germany! It was a really amazing traffic pattern takeoff and landing !
Congratulations! My first flight in a glider was in 1991 in Pirna Aeroclub. Launch by winch. Will never forget it.
@@Maik_Budweg Do you have a gliding licence? So worth taking the training!
@@LUXAviators I have no license. I had an instructor in glider and motor glider and C 172 and Z 43. So you can fly it but without take off and landing. Nevertheless a great time and useful to learn about it. If you really want to learn it and make a license , search for an aviation club. It's the best thing learn to fly.
@@Maik_Budweg I do have my licence already ;)
Oh yeah, another episode. This has just made my day 😃
Your smile and love for aviation make your videos so entertaining and fun to watch. Thank you for your efforts posting videos.
Hey Bambi, awesome video!!! This glider ride along was really cool. I've always wanted to fly a glider and now you make me want to go get my glider rating!! lol By the looks of you falling asleep in the back says a lot, as to how comfortable the ride must be. Having that engine as a backup gives you such a piece of mind to be able to go even longer distances. I enjoyed every minute!! Thanks
Love the Duo-Discus! Just came back from gliding as well today and this awesome video finishes off the day perfectly.
But it's a pain to land actually :D the airbrakes on the original Duo Discus are not very effective
@@LUXAviators Haha true but a Duo Discus is not made to go down easily ;-) the glide ratio is just awesome
Great! Glider gives unique experiecne. You soar like a bird.
Thank you another lovely video.
Ah 'real flying' at last :-) - all the really good pilots learn to fly gliders - I know some switched on airlines usually prefer them as they usually have superior handling skills and are more attuned to nature i.e. my friend used to use the wave lift coming of the Alps, flying out of Milan to gain height quicker and save fuel and of course money. I myself for example have used thermal lift in cloud streets in Saskatchewan in a Cessna 182 to increase speed by about 20% and decrease fuel consumption by about 30% at the same time, and using ridge lift to help climb over mountain passes in the Canadian Rockies in an underpowered Luscombe. Most power pilots who haven't flown gliders have little understanding of how to use the atmosphere to aid them or when to be cautious.
Exactly where I wana end up! How is soaring in BC, do you happen to know?
That seems interesting! I ask myself, yes you can use cloud streets but running the engine on idle only increases drag which is not very efficient? How do you handled that then?:)
I fly a Super Dimona where you can just shut off and feather the prop, decreasing drag a lot.
I don't know much of anything about gliders, so this video wasn't just entertaining, it was also educational! Looks like a great time and I would love to fly with Maurtis! Great video, as always.
As soon as we see your smile we know we're in for a great time, nice 🇦🇺
It's great to witness your passion for flying. I'll bet you don't even call it WORK! Keep reaching for the sky...
Flying gliders is the best recreation in aviation. I have flown power and gliders. I prefer gliders for 33 years now.
Giving a content with a big smile, make a video so special you are amazing 🤗👏👏🤗
I love gliders I only been up 3 times it was so much fun now I do not live near a glider port so now I fly a lot of Radio Controlled sailplanes. Safe Travels see you soon.
Cool glider! Fun watching you having fun - enjoyed the vid.
Thanks for sharing. 😊🙃😊
What a nice flight. Thanks for sharing it and including the tips like thermals are better on the sunny side of the cloud, and hopping cloud to cloud. Many non-glider people ask about these things. Also nice to bring the power and non-power parts of the community together as there is such a divide. Paragliding next?
redbikerdude it’s the combination of the sun and wind side. So if the wind is from the opposite side it can be either. The nice thing is that no day is the same. So you always have to figure out the specifics for that day
Another awesome video, Thanks bambi!
I feel the need...the need....to glide! Fun video as always!
"Flying without an engine", proceeds to fly in a glider.. with an engine
Yeah. in the thumbnail even. lol
So it’s...Pilot Bimbo then ?
They didnt use the engine, did they now?
It's a sustainer and not used for regular flying. The Duo Discus XLT is still classified as glider 👍
If I’m not mistaken old mate said that they are obligated to test the engine if they were doing cross country and then they retracted it.
Duo discus is really amazing glider !! Well done Bambi !
It really is! The original was a pain to land though! :D
Nice! I went flying today, happy times!
The bravest thing in the whole video was getting behind that underpowered tug in a Duo at high density altitude. Towing behind a Super Cub in a Twin Astir, there have been times when I was descending.
Awesome video Rosita ..I have 10 flights in a
Schweizer glider ..drops like a rock lol ..so enjoyed seeing you on the Mentour channel ..very informative since I haven’t flown since the army ...your enthusiasm is contagious 🤗🤗🤗🤗bravo can’t wait till the ferry flight video...
beautiful flight thank you for sharing 😊
Yes! Here we go again!!! Soesterberg, my backyard :-)
Nice gliding adventure
Right after the "mooi man!" (7:55) you're overhead my home town (Harderwijk) and catching the thermals at Beekhuizerzand and Ermelose Heide. Fun watching you!
Never flown in a glider before. My understanding is that rudder input is very pronounced and required for good coordinated turns. The string on the canopy is your friend from what I have read. Great that you get to try different types of aircraft. Sounds like you were having fun.
Indeed, the rudder is used much more then the aileron in gliders. Every pilot that tries gliding for the first time completely messes it up cause they aren't used to using so much rudder
An inversion with a sloppy integrated meter of climb in the blue and a sleeping pax in the back.. Duo Discus Turbo has never felt so much like trucking! ;=P
Bambi doing what she does best! Flyin and youtubin
I must admit the duo is really comfortable, I totally understand falling asleep it's just the best.
Haha i'm glad you get me 😂
i still remember gliding in NL ( solo at 14 EHMZ from EHAC (1980) )
after moving to AT, that is a different ballpark , only limit is the capacity of your bladder there... (or you O2 supply)
This took me back. I spent nearly 20 years whizzing over this area going into and out of AMS.
I'm new to this channel but I'm really enjoying the content👍
Awesome always exciting...
Awesome, this has made my mind up as to booking a trial glider flight👍
Wooooow! Thanks for sharing this amazing experience!
love gliding!
Whahaha Maurits' socks. Legendary on their own.
Awesome to see you in a glider. Also been flying glider since 14. You should try mointain flying in a glider as well. Love you content.
This is very beautiful, keep making content, I love you ❤
Awesome!!!!! I feel younger looking at this video!!!!
Gliders are kings of the skies
Yes and the gliders like the large women, the 747 XD
Asante sana for the videos! Fun and inspiring
Excelente o vídeo! Sou piloto no Brasil e com certeza não tenho essa coragem de voar sem ter um motor.
Duo Discuss my fave
But the original one is a pain in the ass to land.. It's built to fly :D
I just love anything that flies 🙋♀️🇮🇪👍
Omggg it is flying maurits 😍
I love this channel, I can spent my whole day watching this gorgeous girl
Beautiful! I really have to try that someday. Well done :-)
We tend do adopt Low tow rather than Hightow , my best flight was just on 9 Hours covering some 2500 Km triangle
Hey Pilot Bambi, I just watched you live stream with Peter (Greasy Looking Swedish guy - lol) thought you were brilliant! Very interesting lots of well answered questions and inspired me as a PPL modular student from 🇬🇧
Absolutely loved this video!
Have you seen the glider's that have a tiny retractable jet engines to self launch.
They're amazing.
You're the best
Thank you so much for the content!
Everyone who watches definantly love flying as much as you do!.
Blessings eternally dear heart ✨
Laughing so hard at your pre flight fun.....
💖♾️
Nice ep again, Rosita! 🤙🏻
After watching three videos. Subscribed!
What a Gentleman. "It's cold up there", puts on his Yeti-Sky-Boots and leaves you freezing in the back.
Flying a glider just made my bucket list!
Love it
wow what a match, you were flying glider in glederland
Pilotlife 🤘🏻
Muy buen vídeo, un saludo.
Mooi in beeld gebrachte overlandvlucht Rosita, ook leuk dat Maurits uitleg geeft over verschillende dingen, welke route zijn jullie die dag eigenlijk gevlogen?
Wow I love it..won't you afraid of the landing?
Very cool!
Gaafe video!
You guys are cool brave as John Denver would say Far out 🙋♀️🇮🇪👍
I miss gliding. I'm to busy with my study and there isn't any gliding fields nearby anymore. I'm also dutch btw
really enjoy your videos Rosita, thanks for sharing! By the way, I also fly Huskies for glider towing in our club
had to laugh at 03:05 "yeah, I'll drive" ;-)
Exciting your living life
Between this Glider or a Cessna, witch one do you like best? And why?
Gliders come in various different shapes and sizes with different flight characteristics, I don't think that's a really easy question to answer.
But now down to more serious issues.
I've watched all your content.
So now it's time to make more, more, more! 🙂🙃🙂
this is so awesome!
2:10 Is it Blanik?
You have the best life ever....!
12:12
I got MAJORRR a350 vibes
Turning left after cable release? Is this the standard for the Netherlands or just for Hilversum? In Germany the standard is to turn right after releasing the cable. Nice video anyway. And yes, if you don't soar above 3000 meters it is quite unprobable that you get cold feet :-)
We turn right after tow release (@ EHHO). It sure can get cold later on the day in the shade of the clouds at FL77.
We have made some different agreements regarding the turn after tow release, but yes at any other airport I'd turn away to the right. And they forecasted cloud bases of 2000 meters so I expected it to be a bit colder up there haha
Most clubs in the UK specify turning left after release.
We turn right in Canada
First! Thanks Bambi!
Is dit op het vliegveld van Hilversum?
9:45 Lol that's Heerewaarden, Rossum & Kerkdriel. Last one being my home village! Which triangle did you fly?
7:33 Amersfoort! Handig, zo'n motortje op een zweefvliegtuig. :) Leuk kanaal!
Title: "Flying without an engine?!"
Thumbnail: Glider with extended retainer motor
Other than that very nice vid. Especially liked the face shots of Maurits as you could see very well how he was constantly going through the scan cycle of his look-out.
Bambi, pull that man's man card!!
Its fun at least 30mins into the flight for non-accustomed passengers. Then the sickness usually sets in. 😀🤙
Depends on the weather as well 😅 Had one passenger who got sick after 5min cause we were circling tight at 4-5m/s
Nice bird! Motor glider with an INSANE best L/D. Jealous! Would love to fly a Discus. Is it a sustainer engine or can it self launch? I also soloed a glider at 14. Best memories of my life were summers at the club gliderport running line to earn air time & tows..
Duo Discus is only available as sustainer. The Arcus has an self launching option available.
@@flyingknut the L/D is fairly average these days - the Duo Discus is actually a pretty old design now - they are pushing 75:1 with some ships - look up Concordia, Eta, Nixus or EB29R
Soar UK geez. My first solo was a Grob G-103. 36:1. Then my instructor made me fly a 2-33 then a 1-26 (which both came out of the sky like free falling safes) so I would appreciate the newer glass birds. Then spent most of my time in a G-102 after that. It was the highest performance ship we had. Since then I’ve flown a ASK-21 and a Glassfügel Mosquito. (sp). Haven’t really kept up with the new stuff. No electronics when I was flying except for the radio and a separate Bario if you wanted to record the flight. I’d love to get some stick time in these newer high performance machines. Edit: I have been keeping up with the new Jonker (sp) sailplanes. The jet sustainer system looks pretty insane...
@@soaruk3697 I know. Yeah but these are open class ships which cost > 300k €
Gliders is where it will likely end as well in retirement. I'll have to drop by next time we visit.
New sub
Fun fact: The engine oil of a glider with motor (not a TMG) is mixed with the fuel.
lol u fell asleep. I had so much fun. I am learning to fly gliders at the age of 12
I do have a feeling that Maurits have been upgraded from a friend, since 😄
Thank you for the nice video Bambi! What was permanently beeping during the gliding flight?
That was the vario (vertical speed instrument). Higher pitch beeping = going up faster.
Not having to look at the instrument is convenient when handling thermals.
Oh nice. Much cooler than landing a space shuttle, isnt it?
It's as close as I can get for now I think haha!
... Vliegveld Hilversum... Een van de leukste grasvelden...
How is the battery system in a glider charged? Really curious about this.
You can take them out and charge at home. At the Duo Discus the avionic batterys (2* 12Ah/12V) are located next to the heels of the copilot at the rear seat. At the beginning of the day you install the fully charged batterys and in the evening they go back to the charger. Some Gliders have also some solar panels on top of the fuselage.
