  • In one of our previous videos, we have had a brief discussion about what lubrication is, why it is necessary, types of lubricants and it's requirements.
In this video, we have explained the different types of engine lubrication systems available.
Engine lubrication systems in automobiles can be broadly classified into three types. They are Mist Lubrication System, Wet Sump Lubrication System and Dry Sump Lubrication System.
Mist lubrication system is usually used in two-stroke engines. Here, 2-3% of lubricant oil is mixed with the fuel. The fuel vaporizes inside the engine whereas the oil in the form of mist deposits over the surface for lubrication.
This system is simple and of less cost. But, there is a possibility of burning oil with fuel.
The next type is the Wet sump lubrication where the lubricant is pumped from a sump located below the crankcase and the excess oil after lubrication returns to the sump by gravity. This system can also be classified into three types. They are Splash system, Semi Pressure system and Full-pressure system.
In the splash system, the engine parts are lubricated by means of oil splash. Whereas in a Full Pressure System, all the parts are lubricated by pressurised means. Semi pressure system employs oil splash for lubricating half of the components whereas remaining components are lubricated by pressurised means.
The last type of lubrication system is the Dry Sump Lubrication System. Here, a storage tank is located outside the engine block and the oil returns to the tank by means of a pump and not by gravity.
This system can supply lubricant at a high pressure of 3 to 8 bar. It is usually preferred in heavy-duty and high-performance engines.
That’s all about the types of engine lubrication systems.
