I'll stick with the term used and coined by the actual discoverer. The spelling with more legitimacy is Aluminum. Initially Sir Humphrey Davy called it Alumium, and then started calling it Aluminum when he published his work Chemical Philosophy in 1812. Some anonymous t w a t ,upon reviewing said book, thought it sounded better with the extra I and syllable. Everybody calls Aluminum's oxide Alumina, not Aluminia. Nobody else seems to feel the need to rename Platinum Platinium, or Molybdenum Molybdenium, or Tantalum Tantalium.
