Hello Kartik, thanks for writing in. Depending on practice time, you can learn basic techniques in 2-3 years. After that it is about understanding Raga/Talam, and continuous effort to express effectively. Type of veena also depends on the style you wish to pursue. Saraswati Veena is a little smaller in size compared to Chandraveena or Rudraveena, and maybe easier to start with. Best wishes.
I think it's a wonderful instrument. I've heard it, I've read the report on it's construction. The artist, Noor Zehra has put in lot of effort in making and playing the instrument.
Yes, absolutely. There was a tradition of singing along with the Veena. I personally prefer to play only the Veena, except in certain types of lec dems. There is also a tradition of Vocal and Veena duets, this you will find here in this channel. For an example of singing and playing veena simultaneously, hear this recording : th-cam.com/video/uNdsow608iA/w-d-xo.html
All string instruments in India are a type of veena. Sitar is a Persian word meaning Seh Tar or instrument with 3 strings. Indian history mentions of a type of veena called Tritantri Veena - or Veena with 3 strings.
There are many different types of Veenas and styles of playing. If you write to me with your background details and interest, I can guide you better. Here is my contact: www.chandraveena.com/contact/
