This recalls me when I joined the company as a new member 40 years ago. When I song in front of my of my new colleagues, I realized I became emotional imagining how Kandagawa was like.
The first person in English is "I", right? There are many variations of the first person in Japanese. It is different for men and women. For men, "Ore", "Boku", etc. For women, "Watashi" and "Uchi",etc. Each first person has somehow an image. Boyish girls can use the first person of a man and vice versa. This first person can indicate gender, personality, and character. In this song, the first person is "Watashi", so you can tell that it is a song from a female perspective.
Also, went I use a translator like "DeepL", there seems to be frequent mistakes between "his" and "her", and other pronouns. Japanese grammar seems simpler then English grammar so translation create confusion between genders.
Many Japanese second-person pronouns have no gender distinction. Like the English word "You". In Japan, we don't often say "she" or "he". Translation between Japanese and English is really difficult, isn't it😂?

1960年代、世界はボブ・ディランやピーター・ポール＆マリーなど人種差別反対やベトナム反戦のメッセージを込めた、プロテストソングフォークが全盛。70年代にはいると日本では個人のささやかな生活や恋愛を歌ったフォークソングが流行り、＂神田川＂はそんな曲の一つ。
貧しさの中で営まれた若いカップルの同棲生活を追憶した楽曲。歌詞から読み取れるのは、お二人の様に結婚まで辿り着かずに破局したカップルのようだという事。曲調は哀しい感じだが、必ずしも哀しいという歌詞ではない気がする。貧しくとも幸せで楽しかった思い出を懐かしみながら、若い頃は何も怖く無かったが＂貴方のやさしさが怖かった"という歌詞には、相手が何か隠し事をしているのではないかという疑念や経済的に困窮する中で相手のやさしさがいつまで続くのだろうかという漠然とした不安も抱いていたと感じられる。
