What effect do they use to get that note, where you bend at 17 on the B string (E) at the 11 second mark? It seems like they would use an EHX Freeze pedal. Or is there no effect? Is it just the dissonance that I'm hearing? I swear that notes hangs around in the background when they have moved on to the next note... Any insight you have would be appreciated, its something that has always stumped me!
UmungoBungo just use some delay and reverb that will help the note "hang" around but really it's the dissonance from the bending up and down that gives it that "tone" i think you're talking about. You have to pace the bends right...dont bend up and down too fast or you won't get the cool dissonant screech. Also I when I play the bend I'm hitting two notes, the high note that you bend up to and the note three steps down that you actually bend.
the dissonance is there, because he's bending the B string from fret 17 and also fretting 13 on the high E string, which means it's going from a half step two notes to a unison
