To the folks knocking the interviewer he is also a vet and you can tell by his commentary that he knows places and names. If you listen closely he mentions having seen the rock pile they are talking about. Few interviewers on these type vids have such intimate first hand experience. Ty for your service Mr. Vargo!

Sir, this interviewer is ok in rw I’m sure. But he consistently talks about his self in dozens of interviews. I’ve listened to many of these, say all the ones from North Dakota, that guy is an amazing interviewer

I was a radio repairman in the 2nd Tank Battalion Camp LeJeune arriving there in January of 1966. From there I was sent to Futima Marine Base on Okinawa where I spent 13 months. My TH-cam profile photo is me when I was a Corporal and standing outside the NCO Club at Futima. Many of the guys in the Battalion I trained with at Pendleton ended up at Con Thien. I lucked out and was dropped off on Okinawa because they needed radio repairmen. A lot of good men died at Con Thien.

Does anyone remember or recall PFC 3rd Marine Battalion John William Avelleyra a rifleman who was killed May 28, 1967? I am his sister with 3 sons, one who is named after my brother in his honor. God bless all of you who served.

    • @davidc8077

I was with 3rd battalion 7th Marine regiment from 10-67 to 12-68. I was a radioman 2533/FAC with Hotel Company. If we were in the same battalion, we probably passed each other but probably didn't know each other. There were just too many guys, and you tended to stick with the guys you worked with. You didn't tend to make casual friends as they may not be there next week. The emotional toll was very hard when you lost guys in your own group, so we didn't tend to mix outside.
If you want to talk to anyone who knew your brother, get his Company, Battalion and Regiment info and go to an association for that designation.
If you find that group and anyone knew him, I'm sure they would be willing to talk to you.
We might not always remember their names, but we never forget the guys we served with and lost.

I remember sleeping in a bunker with water up to my knees. Didn't take off my flak jacket or helmet. I remember standing on a sandbag wall looking into North Vietnam. Daring them to shoot me. The "Hill of Angels" or, as we called it, "The Meat Grinder." I still see the faces of my friends who died. Marines who were 19 and 20 years old. I miss them so much.

Sarge, just to let you know, when the Army guy's being brought together and shipped to Burma for Merrill's Maurauders stopped at a camp in California for the night, some NCO's jumped the fence and went into town for some alcoholic refreshment and female companionship. They made it back by revile but were busted for their escapade. They didn't care because they figured they weren't coming back from Burma and so a night in San Francisco was worth a stripe. From what I read about them they made a good choice in being good to themselves for one night. I bet a lot of them that didn't go to town, later wished they had. Carry on Marine.
