I never heard of Mike Watt, or heard him, before seeing this. This guy's a monster. He's a jazz punk bassist. I never thought I'd ever encounter that combination! Geez. He's so good.
so glad you could get turned on to Watt from this Wrink - he is prob my favorite bass man of all time. highly recommend his solo records, fIREHOSE and Minutemen stuff just for a start. Jazz Punk for sure. some more stuff on my channel with Watt included bands doing straight Coltrane as well (A Love Supreme Electric). Respect!
This is the earliest video I've seen with Mike playing his signature Reverend Wattplower Mk II. I just picked one up in Root Beer Sparkle. It's a beast. Super well made, and the finish is gorgeous. Tons of different tones available. The custom Reverend pickups are also first class.
@Steve Barton - Big Man Nick Aguilar is already a legend! check out Slaughterhouse or any of the other several bands he's in. On tour with Frankie and the Witch Fingers right now in Europe too 💥💥
truly one of the most fully realized of Watt's bands. they really put it all on the line this tour. who knew it would be one of the last for a long while.

I was too young to ever see the Minutemen when they were around. But somehow this lineup (and also the one with Raul) makes me feel like I can still experience their music properly. Tom Watson is one of the underrated dudes in music.
Caught this show in CT. Easily the best bang for my buck.....these dudes RULE! Glory Of Man is simply perfection..it just never EVER gets old. Thanks for this great upload, AWESOME sound and video quality!
@dmorin my pleasure - i was lucky to document a few shows on this tour and see a few of Watt's different bands a lot the last few years. lots of other clips on my page.
Oh my efffin goddd. I can't even believe what I just saw. This kid is giving Georgie a run for his money! How is this possible??!! I saw the Minutemen five or six times and this is the closet thing to it. Wow.
Seriously, I was listening on bluetooth not watching the video I thought for sure it was George, your awesome man that was great....had to watch again just to see what I missed.
@@nickguyone Well sure, *now* you're 23 but this gig was right before Covid so that was what, like ten years ago? It feels like it was at least that long ago. Kidding aside, I caught the show in Austin and you guys were great. Hope to see you all again soon.
You probably won't believe me, but for proof my name is Liam Emmert check his podcast I'm on it! He stays at my house, signs our records and stuff! My dad even road with him in The Boat to our house!
@@adderon Thanks for that! That 3-part split coil P-bass configuration is a MAJOR innovation! It makes a lot of sense, the tone of the of the D and G strings gets more thin as you get closer to the bridge. With this 3-part split coil you avoid that while changing the tone of the E and A. I bet we'll start to see other companies offering up that set up!
I'm 49 years old, but I try not to get into the whole "back in my day people made good music" thing. There are a ton of extremely talented "punk kids" making music today. Of course it sounds different than their forefathers; music evolves, which is a good thing. Punk kids today can indeed "make a song like that," but that would be derivative and lazy.
If there's another thing Watt has a knack for, it's hooking up with great drummers
@M Rollins truth - all Watt's drummers are next level, but then again pretty much all his bands are too in general.
Ed Hurley is an almost impossible drummer to replace, but this guy is about as close to being his equal as anyone can be!
@@shruggzdastr8-facedclown Who is Ed Hurley? I heard of George Hurley.
Oops, I had a brain-fart and frankensteined Ed Crawford and George Hurley as one person -- sorry for the error!

The fIREHOSE catalog is astounding -- fantastic music.
For more jazz punk: NoMeansNo, Victim's Family, and Deep Turtle, all good stuff.
NoMeansNo is your one stop shop for jazz punk. They even do a “cover” of Bitches Brew.
Oh my god, that kid on drums is dominating.
Love the attitude he has and how Watt sets up the whole stage presence. So professional!
@@owengames7567 Big Nick is nearly 10 year vet playing in Watt's bands!!
@Cris Paquette Nick Aguilar is a most righteous drummer indeed.
Not really.
And such good posture!

Ooo, I love the choice to play behind the drummer!!!
It's tight. Watt's keeping tabs on Nick and lending support for the Econo vibes
GODDAMN!
"New guy" SLAPS! I didn't think it was possible to upstage Mike Watt, but I couldn't take my eyes off of Nick. Their chemistry is DOOOOOOOPE!
