This has always been the backstory I imagined for Crusty. He's a certain pirate captain from those movies that got stranded on an island and the only food source is psychadelic mushrooms.

Nah. In my head Crusty is Captain Dick Magpie. Jack Sparrow's younger step half-brother twice removed. He has experimented with too many mushrooms and also has a knack for finding every crossmember on a ship. With his forehead.
