I just saw this film today at my local cinema. This is the type of film that makes you want to go to the movies. Outstanding! The audience left speechless.

I just went to see it. Everyone was speechless because it ended before there was any resolution and I thought "This is it?" when the screen went blank.

Saw this movie today.slow moving, quiet, powerful with injustice and raw emotions of pain and the fear of community to acknowledge whats on their doorstep. Powerful.

You DO NOT need to read the book. The movie tells it's story beautifully. You will be fine, the story is UNIVERSAL.

@mb4310 you say that, but some of the American reviews want me to tear my hair out. Completely missing the point thinking it will be more action fared or like the Magdalene laundries.

56000 young women affected (probably an underestimate) and, of course, their babies many found buried in mass graves

An incredible book that has such a big impact through a small amount of writing. Claire Keegan is so talented and people should definitely read this book before watching the film.

The Magdalene sisters, made in 2002, by Peter Mullan, a Scottish director and actor, left me in a proper perpetual state, so much so I had to buy a book to delve deeper in to the subject. Fair play to the cast of the movie, those ladies truly brought it to life. No doubt Cillian will do a justice of delivering one of many horrific stories that went on behind those doors.

Guess you can't really understand what someone is going through unless you've been through it yourself. Maybe it doesn't necessarily make you more compassionate than someone who hasn't been through it, but it definitely gives you an inside perspective.

He's amazing so I went to the show this week. I had heard of this history, but I wasn't really sure what I was seeing until it ended. I was shocked that it only ended in 1998 and I was a 90s teen. A good reason to keep your daughters locked up and hidden away during their teen years. Well, it's a bit like Sleeping Beauty though you can't predict where the spinning wheels will be found if you catch my drift.

You multiply this Story 56 , 000 times . Jesus Christ for the Love of God , you begin to realise how effective the Catholic Church was in crippling Ireland for so long . As his wife says , you ignore what is going on to improve your lot in life . Fortunately the
Moral Compass kicks in just in time . The question the audience is left with , Where is the accountability ? That is not Hindsight , That is being a breathing , living Human . Who is going to fight for the Victims ? It is the Church that must be made to feel the Shame that they have been so intent on making all of us feel .

Milking the "bad, evil, church" narrative for all its worth. This film is a story of personal trauma more than anything else. If anything, the nuns saved those girls, after their parents literally threw them out. They didn't have to, but they did.

It’s not that simple. The fledgling Irish state didn’t have the funds needed to support all the social services and entered into a symbiotic relationship with the Catholic Church, which gave the church unprecedented power. Societal and church pressure combined to create a highly repressive, misogynistic society.
