Tom is reminding me of an academic that would get too flustered at a conference and would brain someone who disagreed with a hardbound copy of their thesis. “London Actor Brains Studio Execs With Comic Omnibus! News at 11!”
I like this trend Netflix has of finding actors and actresses that are fans of the original work. Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, and now Tom as Morpheus. Seeing how passionate he is about the source material is so wholesome! He hit the nail on the head when talking about making Sandman into a movie.
Tom’s passion shines through in his performance. Comic Morpheus is his own thing, but Tom’s is so good because you can see the character existing outside of just the performance, you can see and feel his whole emotional life behind his eyes.
Barring Neil himself, I could listen to Tom talk about Sandman all day. He just gets the source material and its myriad levels, which lends so much to his excellent performance. The show's producers really hit the jackpot with his casting.
I absolutely love seeing the difference between Tom answering relatively standard questions, versus the ones that he is invested in. What an intelligent and expressive young man
I feel like he explained better why it shouldn't be a movie than anyone else (even Gaiman himself). I'm so glad he got to be a big part of a story he's so passionate about.
I love how Dream is a brooding character but Tom is all smiles with lots of energy. He and the rest of the cast brings so much passion and love into the show that you can just feel it throughout every episode so far. I love it
That 'Sandman is a story of stories' is so powerful and it's a great decision that they turned it into a series instead of a movie. It's not just about Sandman they're telling but also the philosophy within it and I don't think only 2 hours is enough for that.
seeing Tom being so passionate and so much into Sandman is such a delight. i'd love to see more actors being so passionate about their work. he's absolutely fantastic.
Much better questions asked than on the SDCC panel! Here the actors really could talk about their roles opposed to that panel where all was about thir feelings and such but not about the show itself.
Seriously, I love how thoughtful the interview questions were and not just the typical 'if you could have any superpower' or 'what kind of workout did you do'. Truly a joy to watch these people really think about their answers and seeing how well they know the source material.
Tom Sturridge's passion and the whole cast is awesome. Luved it. Amazon must be crying in their cookies and milk. Not to mention the difference between the intelligence of the cast interviews for Sandman and Rings of Power is like night and day. The Sandman cast interviews talk about their characters and insights into the narrative, their costumes and being humbled by the vision and experience. The ROP cast natters on and doesn't sound like they even picked up a book. Bring on Season 2 of Sandman! At least Amazon still has Good Omens, but Netflix beat them by grabbing Sandman.
While other comics characters, like superman, batman, etc, are clearly fictional, things like dream, desire, death, etc. exist in reality and we encounter them and we are ruled by them everyday.
12:30 Kirby Howell-Baptiste waxing poetic about the power of art to deal with big topics, being a crucial part of two pieces of art which are so effing deep: this and the Good Place. She is iconic.
After just finishing this ... wow! These folk should be extremely proud. They are all brilliant, absolutely inspired casting. Everyone and everything in the show embodies the magic of the comic, absolutely spot on adaption. Well done!
I was genuinely taken aback when I watched the trailers for the series and realized that was him speaking. Even just looking at him, I didn’t expect his voice to be so deep and powerful. He really brought those stylized speech balloons from the comic to life.
This is indeed, one of the best interviews, the questions were incredible good and very much interesting. And Of all the answers on why those four stories became bestsellers, I liked Vanesu's answer better.
My first thought at a throughline for those bestsellers is, at their core, they're stories about humanity. They're stories about just real humans being humans, flaws and horrors on full display. Dark but in a reaffirming way, a reflection of humanity that makes you take heart, that says "You are recognized, humans, there is nothing to hide". When it's all out on the table, we can stop pretending everything bad should be covered up with a veneer of comfort, and allows us to appreciate the really beautiful things in life. You see these dark things, and instead of making you shirk away you feel your emotions rush to the forefront, of warmth and protection, of appreciation. How strongly it makes me want to embrace what I hold dear, love as much as I can, watch or help other people fulfil their desires and goals and just be people together! They're stories that love humans, warts and all.
No offence to the rest of the cast because i loved EVERYONE, but Tom did one hella good job interpreting Dream, his eyes and voice and that stance like WHAT?! His lowkey but still strong dark energy kept me shriveling holding my chest half-moaning (not that type of moan tho, don't be nasteh) on my seat in awe, basking in the feeling of both emptiness and fullness every episode collectively gave me and i need more now, it feels like yesterday when that wittle bitch shot Jessamy leaving me in shambles for the poor thing, instead its been only 4 days and i want to watch it again already, only Stranger Things and Supernatural has ever gave me this feeling before.
Thank you for this interview. Brilliant questions. I love that they had fun doing this. That they got the things that we the lovers of this work cherish.
Such a good well made show! I'm such a fan! Thank you for all that beauty! And I actually want a granddaughter with the name Lucienne now🤩 ( I'm 53😉) Such a great character! Tell me we will have a season 2, please!!🥰
I remember thinking that the actors looked younger than me (25), only to realize most of them were 36 and above. I guess that’s the magic of Hollywood for you. Or being one of the Endless.
i thought what they did with the character's look was pretty tame - like they could've stepped it up a notch and made him look more goth because he looked rather pedestrian to me - but WOW. him out of "costume" looks so different to me. he looks... alive? lol. like there weren't even any major changes to his character's appearance, i don't think... but he still manages to look like a completely different person. i suppose it's the demeanor. and the hair as well lol
As soon as he started talking I was like wow he's an incredible actor. I mean he absolutely became a different "person" for this. He was incredible in it
Dude I felt the exact same way!! It's funny coming upon someone who thought the same LOL. Like at first I was totally all butthurt cos I thought Tom didn't physically look enough like Dream and like... I was kinda mad they weren't all 80s and goth anymore HAHA. But now after seeing all these interviews and actually watching the show, my mind is totally changed and I realized how petty my initial opinion was LMAO. All of the actors, especially Tom, perfectly embodied the characters' demeanors and all!
Tom has said before in interviews that they tried a very comic-accurate portrayal and he was dedicated to that at first, but then they realized it didn’t quite work as they were hoping it would and decided to just have him work on his physique, demeanor, and voice and let that bring the character to life. Neil said at one point that they wanted him to be able to walk down the street and not cause a scene, but with the white makeup, wild hair, and black contact lenses, he drew too much attention. Personally, I don’t mind it so much. Dream appears differently to everyone who perceives him and I don’t think we would actually see him with chalk-white skin and starry eyes if he appeared to us outside of a dream. But I did love that they depicted his eyes like that in a couple of scenes, like when he entered Alex Burgess’ dreams or saw his reflection in the water. And his eyes always did have a natural sort of twinkle in them that made him appear very expressive while also repressing his emotions in the way Tom described. I thought that added a lot to his performance.
Although I actually prefer the change overall, updating the show to be set in the present-day so that Dream missed his 1989 meeting with Hob also means we missed out on him rocking a punkified mullet.
Great questions and answers. When you mentioned that you liked series that know when to wrap it up and they don't go on and on... immediate subscription! Quality over quantity. What are your thoughts on series that end seasons on cliffhangers without a guarantee of being able to wrap up the storyline (i.e. a new season guaranteed).

What is going on with the video from Jake when they do the split screen? Are those filters run amok, or is it a 3-D animated character instead of live footage?

Great interview with the Sandman crew, Jake. You are the best.
Tom being so passionate about what Sandman should and shouldnt be gives me lots of hope lol
Threats to burn an empty cinema is the level of passion and respect for source material we need from actors.

Tom’s passion shines through in his performance. Comic Morpheus is his own thing, but Tom’s is so good because you can see the character existing outside of just the performance, you can see and feel his whole emotional life behind his eyes.
Understanding that Sandman is a story about stories is so important for viewers as well as actors and screen-adaptors.
They really went for "we need the perfect sandman jawline" when casting didn't they? Nailed it.
I am in love with Tom's enthusiasm. He is so passionate.
Yes, its soo great! I could listen to him talking about Sandman the whole day.

My God! Tom Sturridge gets this story on such a deep level. Sandman is my favorite comic ever and I trust Tom to embody Morpheus!
I loved his portrayal
I feel like he explained better why it shouldn't be a movie than anyone else (even Gaiman himself). I'm so glad he got to be a big part of a story he's so passionate about.

Tom's passion at 7:07 really shows why he's great for the show itself and why his role paid off so much.
Jesus these questions turned the actors into enthusiastic endless beings thanks to the interviewer:)

There's just something with the way Tom Sturridge talks that makes me want to listen to him.
Love Toms passion about the project.
So glad Tom is finally getting his flowers he is absolutely fantastic in this role and I hope we will get to finish this out. If only for him

The Sandman is truly a story that is able to relate the things that we think and feel into an amazing masterpiece. It was and is a gem of its time.
