I love, how people who emphasize the need for expressing your unique personality will at the same time try to hook you up to "trends", in other words, something that will deprive you of your personality in exchange for designs that some 'self-important 'bathroom association' decided to be "the trend". Could you give me a break? Plus, yeah, a wonderful trend to have textured tiles. Please don't forget about practicality... or hire extra help for cleaning all those textures collecting dust and grime. My recommendation, use common sense and your own personality to make your bathroom functional and practical based on YOUR needs and taste. You'll use it, after all, not the people dictating fictitious trends. That's all. :-)
When your bathroom is done it’s done. Don’t worry about trends They come and go and your bathroom stays with you. Keep it clean and it will serve you for years
Free standing bathtubs placed near a wall or walls are excellent traps that capture and store bathroom dust, grime, and microbial growth in the areas between the wall and the tub that are all but impossible to clean.
No stand alone bathtub. No textured wall tiles, no bowl on counter top vanity, no fluted wall or cabinets. Yes to streamline, functional mirror. Anything that has no function, hard to clean deign is out for me. I clean my bathroom myself, I do not need all the useless nooks and crannies that’s hard to reach and clean.
I have my own trends , No shower curtain , no shelves , no crazy wall patterns , no flimsy mirrors , no busy surface . Yes to generous cabinetry and sink , dimmer lights, cohesive and clean !!! Clean !!! Clean!!!
I had a very large tub and could never use it because I would struggle to not go underwater, it was not relaxing at all. I put in a much smaller tub, I can really soak in it and just chill. I love it and use it about 2 x a week.
Agree with all the negative comments on free standing tubs as far as cleaning- many are also hazardous to get in and out of.. I have tried them. Someone needs to live in these houses- not just look at them. They have to be easy to clean-not just eye candy.
Exactly! I have to for a health reason until there is an alternative. Besides that, I most likely wouldn't purposely delete a bigger tub, especially if I can get a sunk in the floor so it's easier to get into. I like space that's adequate to move in.
Glad to hear you love them! Some folks are cramped for space so they just don't make sense. I know here in Southern California bathrooms are relatively small (for the average home) so there isn't much room. What area of the world do you live in?
You would definitely want a matte tile for floor, and there are anti-slip coatings you can get for the main tiles on the floor of the bathroom as well.
There is no “organic” in any shape of any mirror, they’re just using it as a marketing term for “asymmetrical”. Blobby mirrors don’t evoke any kind of organic anything.
I enjoy these videos, but a person could go crazy and bankrupt following trends simply to follow trends. How many people simply follow a trend because it looks great at the moment but soon thereafter have buyers remorse when they realize cleaning is a pain and it simply isn't practical? And every dated trend was once touted as the latest and greatest. Huge "statement" tubs that are never used, dark bathrooms that look like factory janitor closets, blob mirrors that look like microorganisms, and stupid open shelving were trends that were predictable failures. Form follows function, and function includes durability, cleanability, accessibility, affordability, and practicality. Unless you have an army of maintenance personnel on speed dial and deep pockets, it's probably best (and certainly greener) just to update when things are damaged or not restorable to something close to their original glory - and then just pick what you like. There's an old song that goes, "If you can't be with the one you love honey, love the one you're with."
My floating Kohler toilet was a disappointment. Maybe it wasn’t installed correctly but it moved down ever so slightly as I sat down which really made me nervous when we had large guests use it. Secondly the bowl had very little water so #2’s dried up on the surface and it always looked gross on the inside . This didn’t happen to me, but all the plumbing is behind the wall and I always wondered what would happen if the toilet got really plugged. And the floating toilet was so expensive! For my current house I bought American Standard Studio toilets and I am happy every day.
Love my giant tub. No one will change my mine about that. Honestly- trends just suck. In 5 years, it'll be "floating vanities and fluted woods are out". Whatever. Do you.
I can't understand these free standing bathtubs. First, I get cold unless there are doors keeping the warm air in, and I take a bath every morning to shave my legs, I can't do that in the shower, and I need to rinse off and wash my hair too. I'm lucky if I have extra time to relax. Also, those floating vanities look like something is missing, and they just sometimes feel jarring.
I personally feel like floating vanities are a nod to the future you or a family member. I've had 2 foot surgery's in the past 2 years and I wish I had a floating vanity so my metal boot would fit under it and allow me to stand at or roll up to the sink on my knee scooter. Cause a 4" toe kick just doesn't cut it...lol...it might look odd but it can increase the function of your bathroom and make cleaning your floors easier too.
Totally agree esp when put into the shower where soap scum accumulates. Creates a lot of scrubbing. Even outside of shower there will be dust sitting on the grooves. No thanks for me
And here’s REALITY: unless you’re preparing to list your home for sale, decorate it however appeals to YOU. Trends are for followers. Trends are for sheep. It’s YOUR HOME - decorate as you please if you’re planning on staying in your home for another ten years then do as you please. It’s just that simple
Textured tiles are difficult to clean, soap and other items stick to those textures. I prefer form follows function, easy to clean first then add your textiles.
Open shelving has always been a problem. No textured tiles - a cleaning nightmare. Tubs are great if you can get in/out of them. I guess if you have a cleaning service - my comments are moot!
We will be updating our bathroom in a couple of years. I think I'll just go with a tub and have the shower built into the tub. I like a soaking tub sometime but mostly shower. Or maybe I should just have a huge shower with a built in seat and forget the baths. I just dont know 🤔❤
That is a great question and something to consider as you update your bathroom! A tub shower combo can be a great option since it allows for both, especially if you only have one bathroom in the home. However, if it's your forever home and you want to use it through your retirement years, you may want to consider a walk in shower.
If this house is going to be your forever home, think about adding in ceiling bracing for a lift to get you in and out of the bath, decreasing the risk of a fall. Also, bracing for grab bars anywhere you think you might need it...extra power outlets, maybe one by the toilet for a bidet seat. It is so much cheaper to have these things added in while your walls and ceilings are open during the remodel. If you have a shower pan installed make sure they do a water test to make sure it doesn't leak.
All houses newly decorated should last 15-18 years as is. Well cared for the are turn key for up to 20. If you sell, within those years. Don’t change anything. Some fresh clean paint and everything well repaired and you will get your full value.
I don't like stone drenching it's to visually busy and the walls with texture are going to take forever to clean. Not to say these features can't be pretty but they're not functional and can be extremely expensive.
Practical, high quality, easy to clean.. something timeless. I actually like high quality wood cabinets. Personally, I don’t understand the stand alone tub. They don’t seem practical to me. I see extra cleaning and you will have to wash the floor behind it. I’d rather have the tubs we have had. For me.. I am ready to get rid of the tub all together. I don’t take baths anymore and they are dust collectors. I’d like a large, doorless shower. No more shower doors and glass and shower floor level with bathroom floor. Also a nice bench inside. We never know when we will have some health issues and might need to bring a walker in the shower with you. That can happen at any age.
I'm with you. I had a real old fashioned bath room in a upper class not mansion but lovely huge home in Britain. The bath stood in the middle of the room and was built for baths only before they had running water. Fortunately, the older Lady and Mayor of the town added modernity to the home. 1st indooor running water. So that you didn't need to pay a great bunch of servants to bring the boiled water from the small oven/former chimney to try to get the bath hot. It also saved money on water. I would take long full to my chin baths for ages and get warmed up during their coldest wettest winter in 50 years. Yay. So when it came to putting a bathtub into the guest bathroon which was the easiest to put a bath in. , I chose a built in tub, for a longer equally deep bathtub. I barely got to use it before our youngest niece moved in until she graduates from college taking part time classes and working full time to be able to pay her own way through college. Then our youngest nephew moved in because his mom has terrible cancer and needed someone to take care of her son until she can make it out here somehow. And we have no more room. The oldest got my western bedroom and the boy got my quickly cleared out enough Craft room as his new bedroom. I was soo glad we didn't buy a free standing tub. That would have been a mess with kids. I'm very happy about my choice and I think that it looks lovely, with our own design and tiles. I had handmade somewhere between turquoise and grey green tiles that covered the back of the tub and the ends were shiny huge marble looking white with bits of grey design then slightly smaller but still long rectangular grey looking marble tiles on the floor. It works well even with kids using it all the time, it still looks gorgeous with an old fashioned finished white wall.
We are looking for a house and I am dismayed at the number without any tub in the primary. Just bigger showers. Major dealbreaker. There are about 50% of us who like baths. And some of us will never, ever take a shower. I hate them. And I dont want to walk upstairs or across the house to some dinky little bathtub where I'm fighting with kids bathtoys. And if there is space to put both, it is super duper expensive to fix later adding tens of thousands to what we have to spend. I hope this trend goes away. The homes are massive in texas, so I don't understand why the tubs are disappearing.
And if I'm ever to old and decrepit to take a bath, I either need one of those baths with a door, or if I can't have that I hope I have a pool to at least knock the dirt off. Here is another thing. You can take a shower in a bathtub, but not a bath in a shower. So if anything people should be getting rid of the giant showers and leaving the tub if only one can stay.
I’ll take the dramatic, oversized bathtub for 100, Alex. Some couples like to take baths together or luxuriate in a spa-like environment alone. 🛀 Design YOUR space for YOUR needs and lifestyle.
I like the way you think. But I found the giant tubs take way too long to fill. And as an everyday bather, I prefer a deeper but smaller footprint where I can enjoy a deep soak once in a while and a quick shallow bath for the everyday. And for the love of all things holy, put a handheld small shower head in the tub. Works great for rinsing hair, small humans and pets, and makes cleaning the tub so much easier.
It depends on how large the shower is. A doorless shower is fine as long as the shower spray is contained within the shower and away from the rest of the dry bathroom.
I dislike doors all together. I think they all look cold. I prefer good old-fashioned curtains, but ones that are classy looking. Much easier to maintain, too. (Of course I understand it doesn't work on today's modern huge walk-in showers ) I had a glass door explode on me years back and I ended up in the hospital to peel shards out of my legs. Never any glass in my shower ever again.
Those stand alone tubs are useless. No where to put your glass, soap, towel...unless you brig in another piece of furniture. I love my oversized tub with plenty of useable space all around it. And it has jets. "Trends" come and go. Make what you have as nice as it can be and enjoy!
As far as clothing your bathroom walls & floors completely with matching stone, I think it is a sterile looking. Looks like a slippery, skating rink without the beautiful landscaping or interest. If anyone can afford some of these designs, I'm guessing they are using a decorators input and have ppl to clean their homes
Yes that is what a lot of people are saying it would be a challenge to clean. However I did see some textured tiles at Floor and Decor and they were a very subtle texture. I still think it would only be good as a decorative tile.
