BRILLIANT - recovering from pneumonia, looking at my beautiful English garden covered in weeds - depressed, sad because I can’t do IT (all). But I CAN weed one pot at a time. Thank you - will do. Have a great cruise x

This is how I do it. One tiny thing at a time. Sometimes big gaps in time in between, but I love when I am able to get motivated to take a small step. Each tiny thing feels like I am moving in the right direction. 🌼🌸🌹⚘️🌿

Please look after yourself and rest up, if you don’t let yourself fully heal pneumonia can get worse. Pneumonia is very serious, when you are better your garden will still be there waiting for you to restore it to its former glory. In the meantime maybe indulge in watching a few gardening shows, Pinterest, online for tips and inspiration, or anything that brings you joy. Take care 🤗

Exactly!!!! Just 5 or 7 minutes at a time!
Or one pot at a time!!!
And maybe make each pot at a time be the pots that are in the front so you can start enjoying the benefits faster as you heal and as you rest before you can get to the next one! Good luck!!!!

I think the biggest gift a woman can give herself is to just stop pretending everything you're supposed to do is an equal priority to everything else. Aside from the obvious goals of keeping a roof over your head and raising your kids, decide how much bandwidth you have leftover and pick a couple of goals and actually commit to them. They will be more achievable, you'll feel like you can trust yourself to show up for yourself and you'll achieve more in the long run.

This may be annoying but here it goes. Two sayings that have made a difference for me. “Excuses are the lies we tell ourselves that nobody else believes”. Second is “Untill the pain of remain g the same becomes bigger than the pain of change we stay where we are”. We all have concerns and considerations about stuff. I’ve also worked on taking the word try out of my vocabulary. I’ll either do it or I won’t. Next is I don’t judge myself as much as I used to. Ok ,those are my thoughts.

Even if it's only in 5-7 minutes at a time! Due to health, age, child care concerns, or as in my case disability, I went from basically a hoarders house to a minimalist in about a month!!!!
With only help from my sister at the last weekend (plus texting her pics of before and after every couple of days to help keep me on track & her cheering me on really helped keep me motivated too!!!:)
    It's totally doable!!!!!

I have been avoiding this video because I KNEW what you were going to say. I have had a thousand sound "reasons" why I can't lose the last 15 pounds. For YEARS. No more.... They are NOT reasons, they are excuses. My face hurts from all the slapping. This. Changes. NOW!

Watching while walking on the treadmill I bought this week because I kept making the excuse that I didn't have the time or the money for a gym membership. Made myself workout at home an hour a day before the kids wake up.

    • @sonyad7723
      @sonyad7723 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yay you!!!! I bought a treadmill (mine has full side handrails for safety due to my disability though) and now I'm on day 170 CONSECUTIVE days in a row with absolutely no breaks!!!! I don't give myself any excuses for a day off, bc I don't give myself any excuses for a day off of eating either lol
Consistency is the key to a best habit, whether you decide every MWF, or every week day, or like me every single day, stick with it and no excuses for days off (or maybe make up days if you're a MWF person might work for some people;)
      Good luck!!!!!

Thanks, Cass. You did a recent podcast on "Friction", or what was impediments to working out or doing that task that you weren't doing. And I had a "slash" room, that was supposed to be a workout space "slash" a dog grooming space, and that slash caused the issue of not doing either the workouts or the dog grooming consistently. So I moved all the grooming stuff to half the garage, which meant that the garage needed to be organized and decluttered (why do I need 20 paint cans????), and then my workout space was ONLY a workout space and yes, the last week has meant no excuses on working out, as it is only 20-30 minutes and there's nothing in the way, just go down and do it!

One of the hardest things for hoarders to hear is that they shouldn’t have any pets. If you struggle with keeping your home clutter-free and clean, the last thing you should be doing is introducing animals into your space. Human beings aren’t entitled to own animals to make themselves feel better about life. Your animal is your total responsibility and it’s up to you to make them feel good, not the other way around. Not everyone is meant to keep animals in their homes at all stages of their lives. Please consider becoming pet-free, because it sounds like your are making your pet one of your excuses.

Especially if one suffers from perfectionism.
It helps to change our mantra and mindset to “progress, not perfection”.
There’s a saying, “eat that frog” which means look at your “to do” lists and do the most difficult one first. Get that out of the way and everything else seems simpler. But sometimes it’s hard to have the motivation to do that.
So It also helps to break down the task into little tasks or little “bites” and celebrates successes no matter how small. Soon you’ll eat that frog in no time 🐸

I just wanted to suggest this as something to suggest in your Take your house back course, when people start making excuses as to why they can’t do the work that day I’d tell them what your coach told you “You can either have a excuse or you can have results.” And then offer solutions to the “problems”
    Examples: “I’m not home today.”
Solution: “Can you clean out your purse in 5 minutes?”
Example “I can’t declutter today, my baby is napping and sick today.”
Solution “Can you clean out and restock the diaper bag in 5 minutes while baby naps?”
Example: “I’m packing to go on vacation today!”
Solution “can you clean out and detail your car in anticipation of your trip?”
You can literally suggest anything, and it’s not a “I’m putting you down because you have an excuse!” It’s more a “You have a problem, you want progress so how can we meet you where you’re at in this moment of your life and help you achieve that?!”

Just like small de-clutters a few times a day will add up to bigger results, small exercises will too. I do small sets spread out over my day and it isn't so hard. Examples: 1) 10 squats 2) relax down to reach for my toes 3) take small weights in my hands and wave them around.

Such a big truth this is. And the funny thing about procrastination is that most of the things you are avoiding either still have to be done anyways, but you left it last minute and now you are running around like a chicken without your head or it's a sign you should rethink the thing you are avoiding and may be not do it at all or it's a sign it's just your fantasy self talking and the things that go with it should just be discarded or it's a scarcity mindset thing and you don't want to ruin it or you are waiting for the perfect moment. The truth is there are no perfect moments. I just made a squirrel 3D puzzle decoration I have been avoiding to do on the perfect day. I decided to bite the bullet and just do it. I sat on my bed while cursing for a half hour with paint, a water pot, and trying to work out the directions. Its freaking adorable. So no more excuses. You are such a joy to listen to Cas, sorry for my long rant. I swear it's an ADHD thing.

I've always procrastinated about doing any type of exercise but you're right - no excuses or you simply don't have any results (except guilt). When I create an exercise routine, I begin to enjoy it. First I have to like what I'm doing at least a little bit. Then I start with 10-15 minutes daily - because I'm out of shape. After a few days I'll add 10-15 minutes. My goal is 150 minutes a week minimum (I'm pre-diabetic). Then I broke it down to how many minutes I'd need to exercise each day in a week. I found that 45-50 minutes a day, 3-4 times a week is my sweet spot. This helps me plan for my busy days. I can always exercise more.

Spot on! I so needed this TODAY. I've been dealing with a case of the lazys, and maybe some depression. Apparently, I need accountability. My daughter said I NEED some sunshine and daily walks. Ok. I listened to your Time management episode at my daughter's softball game last week, between a double-header, and it got me on my feet taking a really brisk short walk instead of sitting still (since I wasn't home to declutter anything). And a lot you talked about stuck in my brain. Then just now this episode came on automatically today and instead of sitting I got up and was just going to throw out the trash. Instead, when I went to the kitchen I looked at the "frog" I've been avoiding thinking it was going to take soooo much time. Yeah, I got it done in about half of this podcast. Thank you! Your tough love is absolutely what I need sometimes to just get started! The combo of those two episodes is really helping me to stop making the excuse that something is going to take too long.

I used to set the time for what ever amount of time. And I would just plow through. I need to get back to this process. Like 30 min in the yard pulling weeds. 20 min for a walk etc. by the end of the day I have sat down and wasted a TON of time. Your right this is a bad habit!! I need to make a Tshirt that has the title of this old cast on it. And I need to wear it on my day off!!!

Cas, thank you so much! The words about not perceiving exercise as a productive activity really hit me. I struggle to find 30 minutes every day for proper exercise sessions and now I can totally see why. There's always a bunch of much more "important" things than my health and longevity... Sad... Sad that I still have this idea in my subconsciousness, although I say aloud otherwise. I've been sure that now I finally prioritize my health but your words opened my eyes to a deeper level of the issue.

My hubby and I body doubled again today. We cleaned out a kitchen catch all drawer and the middle drawer of our roll top desk. It got my juices flowing so I decided to use my elliptical bike today as well because I am too heavy in my weight. I do not have any upper arm muscles. So, then I got out my 3lbs. barbells and worked my upper arms (alternating my arms) with them too for another 20 mins. This was a long time coming since I haven't done this in over a year. I felt jazzed after I worked out. It even made me happy, and I felt more productive than usual. I asked my hubby if he would be willing to help me clean out my closets in our bedroom someday. He said that he would help me do it. Have a safe trip. Will you take and share some pictures with us?

I think it's an underlying message to self of not deserving that holds me back from doing many of the things I love. Often when I bring in the tools needed for a next step of enacting a dream (sometimes after years of desiring the tool), that's where I stall out... actually starting on doing the thing my heart has been calling for. Kind of like stalling out in decluttering by leaving things I want to let go of at the front door. That final step of letting go stalls in the wanting to get the things to the right person. We know that's a pattern to let go of (to let go of the need to direct the thing to the right place) yet the pattern runs deep and is a challenge to overcome. Just start. Momentum, for me, is a main key.

I love your opening remark! Excuses or results! I've consistently watched your channel as I have had to tackle an unusual decluttering situation and you've kept me going!! I've been cleaning out 3 storage units in recent months, transferred boxes to my apartment(downsized from a house of 35 years and also sorting through my 90 year old mother's unit) and sorted back through many boxes because I kept too much or just couldn't declutter in the awkward storage unit space. I finally set a goal to just be out of the units to avoid more payments. What a relief to have that money now!! Then I set small daily goals to empty each box, sometimes one, sometimes several. When I couldn't get motivated I chose an area in the apartment to make "pretty" and that got me moving again. I think I've used all of your strategies along the way to keep going! As of now I have most of the boxes emptied and after at least 8 carloads of donations I have learned the art of "if there's not space, I can't keep it." I have become less attached to things I didn't think I could live without just a few weeks ago. I wish it were all done but I still have to tackle the photos. It isn't the first round of going through them so it's getting easier. This post is a hot mess, lol, but all this to say, thank you, Cass! Even thought you've talked through these strategies over and over, they do work and every time you repeat them in a fresh way, the message gets through. Thank you for your encouragement, your laughter, your tough love, your vulnerability & realness, and also making this your job!! Setting aside excuses, even the good ones has enabled me to breathe again and not feel like I'm drowning in stuff.

Being someone with many health challenges that steal my energy, a bad neck, and two bad knees, I wanted to still find a way I could declutter my house. I find placing an empty box at the end of the hall between the bedrooms helps me. As I come across things I want to declutter, I place them in the box .When the box is full, I tape it up and label it donations. Then I get my husband to put it in my van on his day off, because I can't lift heavy things. When I have a van load ,I take it to a thrift center. I've gotten rid of 6 van loads this way even though I have limited energy. I have a way to go yet, but am finally seeing progress. Maybe this method could help someone. I also keep an empty box on the floor of my closet and as I come across clothes that don't fit or I no longer wear, I place it into the box. When it is full I take to donation center. These methods take little energy, but helps make progress towards getting decluttered.

Thank you Cass❤ just filled a garbage can with expired can goods! I did it while listening to you. I never would’ve done it without you. I also just listen to the podcast were you told about your parents having to evict a squatter in their apartment rental. That one really help me too. I think the oldest food I threw away expired in 2004? How can that be?🤷‍♀️

Definitely needed this today. I have been putting off a couple commissions (I'm an artist) because I feel like I have to have the house spotless first... then, I put off working on the house because my son just moved back in and it's been overwhelming... I have been in a procrastination paralysis. I am going now to work on the commissions.

I would have taken this negatively so I had to think about that a while because it is a good quote. I was surrounded growing up by people who often didn’t get things done probably because of excuses, but I was the one getting things done. (Most of the time.) So I wasn’t allowed to have “excuses” according to others even if it was a legit reason. So if I didn’t finish my homework due to a raging fever it was an “excuse” if I broke up with a toxic boyfriend it was an “excuse” and so on. So thanks for helping me uncover this issue because I’m sure there are areas I have excuses I’m blind to. ✌️

thank you for this video and your decluttering tough love videos, been decluttering for while, i keep pushing and with every round i can wrench one more thing, i am so much hoping. it worked for the kitchen, i put most of cutlery, plates and cups in a box, now whichever state the kitchen gets over some days, it is reset so quickly. i have long covid brainfog, and i find the tiniest tasks to progress the decluttering because i know i will get there eventually. i also found out about the emotional roots (living in survival mode), it still takes time, but i always find the next spot where in can chew away one more item. thank you! thank you for showing up in your videos, this gives courage to continue showing up to decluttering.

For your gratitude journal, I'd like to offer this thought, which is not original: Gratitude turns what you (I) have into enough. I have found that this statement created a turning point in my decluttering process.

thanks cass! i needed this kick in my butt! i'm often told i make excuses and i hate it when people tell me this, but it's so true and for me, it's a trauma/ emotional response. it's especially hard because the way i think, since i'm autistic, makes me prone to come with bs why i can't do stuff

Ive been decluttering for a while and it was hard to start while being ill (lifelong issues unfortunately, especially low energy/sleep disorder). I have had days where cooking was too big of a task, let alone decluttering! However! I did one basket, box or corner at a time. I'm far from my goal yet, but because my house is a lot less cluttered, when I am almost too tired to cook, I can still do it, BECAUSE everything is decluttered. Yeah I chose decluttering over cooking some days in the very beginning, but the odd ready meal is not going to kill me. I'm glad I did at the time and I can now get back to cooking home cooked meals in a decluttered kitchen. It was difficult changing my mindset and realising that that was my excuse, because I mean we need to eat therefore cook right!? But if you need to eat ready meals for a week to get your kitchen in order and clutter free, so you can enjoy it and maintain it easily, then do it! 🤷‍♀️

Ooo, ooo...it's also close to the concepts of having an internal locus of control or an external locus of control.
The person with external trips on the threshold of the doorway and says "someone should fix that!" The person with internal says "Oops! I'll have to watch out for that next time!"
I can't help but think that another facet of this gem is the ability to discern between the things that are in our control and the things that are not, like in the Serenity prayer.

I am starting today by "clearing the slate". This means making sure the dishes are done, the laundry is put away, the clutter is processed, and I know what's for dinner. I also need to make my bed. This will provide a clear, flat, sorting space to work in the bedroom. By doing the other things, it makes room to work on decluttering.
And regarding those bins you're buying, DON'T. As you say, get rid of trash (recycle) first. Grab an Amazon box for donations -- that's a win win because you donate and recycle all at once. Then, as you come across a bin, drawer organizer or tote, stage them in your "store". If you know something belongs in the linen closet and you will use it, shove it there until you declutter the space. Remember you will have already scheduled what area you will do each day, so you can finish the job.
Then as you say, "I need a container for these things", you "shop" in your "store". If your "inventory" doesn't meet your needs, you may write down the item on a notepad for your next shopping trip. The challenge is to use all those assorted bins and containers before you buy more.
Sorry for the rant, but I needed it. I hope this helps someone.

It's so good :) There's a quote I heard, which fits so well with this message: Grattitude won't change the things in your life, but it will change everything about how you feel about the things in your life. Sometimes it's avoiding discomfort or anticipated discomfort. Working out and getting sweaty can be physically uncomfortable. Decluttering and other personal growth or dealing with all the emotions you've discussed in other videos can be mentally uncomfortable. 😕 I have accepted many parts of life are uncomfortable but the end result is worth it. Even if it's just learning not to jog when it THAT hot out and doing it differently next time. ❤

Hi Cass that is awesome that you did the Zoom exercise. I think we make up excuses because we just don't want to do things. When I have to clean and don't want to ,I just tell myself just do it then I can grand do something g I like, like read . I always so if you don't you wont.I also think we as women we are way too hard on ourselves. We aee always going to have an excuse. We can talk ourselves out of things. My husband always says get er done. We just have to keep keeping on. Have fun on your cruise. Happy Mother's Day

Even if you can’t work out for ten minutes it’s better than nothing. I used to just run quickly around my block but now I run 4 or 5 miles a day. Just tell your brain it will be ten minutes. Once you’re into it you’ll do longer.

The only thing I felt I had control over yesterday was doing a little bit of decluttering, here and there through the day. I didn't realize how much progress I had made in the bathroom until I came home from the ER Friday night and my side of the vanity was a mess. That was the first thing I decluttered yesterday morning.

Took a hard look at my 'gonna' items. I'm gonna bake cupcakes. Pretty sure I never have in my life, but sure, that unused baking pan...fine. Gone. I could get by with one coffee mug, I had 15. Now I have 3. So, yeah, I still have some 'just in case' built into things, but it's a lot better than it was. I won't say things are close to great, but they're better than they were. As time goes on, I'm able to let go of more, because now I'm able to focus on what actually gets used, and the other things I just 'have'. By not bringing a lot of things into the house, the natural cycle of using things up, means I can keep on top of things better.
