I saw the Tonfa being used on a pretty drunk and aggressive soccer fan inside the local train station on match day once. Lots of shouting, lots of slurred „Come on then, let’s take this outside!“ and then things went really quick - the drunk dude lunged at a police officer with some sort of object. Might have been a knife, might have been a bottle - I was unable to make that out from the distance and the officer partially obscured my view. Next thing I see is the Tonfa comes out. If I saw this correctly, the first strike went down on the guy’s wrist or forearm, the second one on the side of his knee, the third one on his shoulder and a last one landed in the back (kidney area maybe) after he had started folding up and while he was already well on the way to the ground and howling. Everything was over in less than 10 seconds or so and the guy was probably regretting his life choices with his face laying in the dirt, one officer kneeling on his shoulder and another on his legs. My guess is that this drunken idiot got a bruised knee, possibly a fractured or at the very least heavily bruised forearm / wrist and a few days of being sore in the back as a souvenir from his attack.
Great video, but you taught sheriffs to hit subjects in the head? When I was in the Army Military Police academy head, neck, and groin were off limits and considered deadly force, and if you were caught using deadly force with anything beside your M9 you were going to Leavenworth.
Oh boy did I ever run into issues discussing UoF continuum starting as an MP through a brief city PD phase, and back - returning as a DACP for a while. - Deadly Force is deadly force, and if justified, the means of achieving it (weapon) - is irrelevant. That's the *legal* standard. The *Army* "way" - which I think is much more of a threat, than a reality - is lethal force is restricted to the use of firearms. Now... this argument with MP management (over the carrying of... pocket knives, no shit) was a couple of decades ago, and Policing has become "Law Enforcement" and I have no idea what things are like in the MP world today. When I transferred to Veterans Affairs - *they issued us knives!* So much shit that the MP Corps is just dumb about... and in my experience, it was mostly fuck-fuck games, played by bored command officers. Very little of it applies in "the real world."
I jis learn in class u can't go above the waist wen is it ok to do this serious ? It seems more effective this way then what there teaching in my security class

I have found that full power spin strikes do funky things on impact, and usage as a "sweeping" type block, seems to work better for me - as an individual. All weapon use is as an individual - a pretty good mindset for me; one that I (try) to keep while learning, and instructing: learn the whole thing, and then focus on the parts that work best for the individual. I think the biggest problem with the PR-24 (and the single tonfa, in general) - is that "it" is supposed to be "they" - used as a pair. Obviously we have developed some effective techniques, but it's really not how they were designed for use from the beginning. We do a lot of unnecessary exposure and use of our off-hand for blocking and grappling techniques, when there's supposed to be another tonfa there. While I have my nostalgia affection for the PR-24, I think it is a tool that is well past it's prime. The image alone, is bad for business - too closely associated with police brutality. I'm actually surprised any agencies still carry it. But, Oakland still carries wooden truncheons... must be a Cali thing. 😄
I have one of these batons, but I don’t have any training. I’ve tried to strike with them or even hold it along my forearm with the short and sticking out, it’s nearly impossible to hold straight. I’m not sure how you’re doing it. Maybe you have to have extremely strong grip or something, I don’t know. But I remember when I try to swing it it’s almost flopping around like crazy.
See Okinawa kobudo. If you know kickboxing (Duch is Kiokushin + boxing) then not far away from Kiokushin-Kan (uses weapons including Tonfa). I.e. very interrelated and transferable skills

There is a fine legal line between, "walking stick" and "weapon." Check with your state, county, and municipal laws - *FIRST.* Just because you can buy it, even own it, doesn't always mean you can *possess* it. [I honestly think such laws are... a bit too tyrannical.] That said, you may find out that you *are* allowed to legally possess an actual baton, in which case - I'd go with an expandable straight baton, like an ASP. As for a metal cap, or other mods? Probably wise not to modify the original design, especially from a legal perspective, and from a design perspective - altering it could weaken the structural integrity.
people of you watch this many times you see him hit the red zones of the body that are deadly strikes in alot of states in less that person has a knife or club can you hit the head neck and chest otherwise you open your self and the company up for lawsuits need to check your laws is all I'm saying. i found if you take the short end and jab it just right in the leg muscle works great for charily horses in the legs.
All od three moves would be highly illegal for police or security personel where i live. They are issued tonfas anyway, which are dead weight on their belt. Straight com-block style rubber batons would be better choice i believe.

Last I knew, head strikes were not to be applied unless life or death. Same as when I carried a straight baton working security.
The advantage of this weapon is how it closes the distance, without putting the technician within reach. make no mistake this weapon is lethal.
We were only thought like 5 techniques working for armed security.

It's a joke LAPD use the Aetco side handle baton. Aetco has certified instructors.

Here in Europe, you can buy tonfas from the top Czech manufacturer ESP (Euro security products), which also supplies them to police units.
you can make them using a cut off shovel Handel, a long bolt with two nuts and some duct tape.
