OK, I have to jump in. Criminally underrated? Not just underrated, which every movie seems to be if I were to believe TH-cam comments, but criminally so? It had a great critical response when released. Steve Martin was nominated for a Golden Globe and won a Writer's Guild of America award for his screenplay which is the best you could hope for since it's voted on by other writers. It made a decent amount of money and through the years has been considered a classic with it frequently being listed on top 100 lists for comedies. It's rated the correct amount. I do not know how you came up with anything otherwise.

This movie is an updated adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac a play from 1897 set in the late 1600. Cyrano was a real person. The play is actually a tragedy. It was also recently adapted into a teen comedy called Roxy. Love the Channel.
Chris is played by Rick Rossavich who was also in The Terminator as Ginger’s BF who gets killed just before she does. He’s also Slider (Iceman’s copilot) in Top Gun.
I remember Steve Martin doing late night interviews for the promo for this movie back in 1987. He told a funny story while filming this movie. Steve walked into a real local "biker" bar while in full makeup and sat at the bar. This was off set. He ordered a drink and the biker who was sitting next to Steve turned and asked him "why the long face buddy"?
Yep, I remember him talking about that on some talk show. I believe he mentioned first that they made a lot of jokes among everyone on set about the nose, but THAT one comment from a biker was to him the funniest one. I just love the concept of a regular someone being able to come up with something off the cuff that cracks up Steve Martin.
Cyrano did the same take-down of a guy who insulted his nose in a crowded theater. After reeling off several more colorful insults, the greatest swordsman in all of Europe further schooled the crowd and the bully. "Cyrano ..." is a fixture by my couch.
Another underrated Steve Martin movie is the movie called All Of Me (1984). The best premise I can give you, watch Steve Martin play half himself and half Lily Tomlin. Excellent comedy.

for me this is when Steve pivoted from being the wacky, zany, over-the-top standup comic & into a more mature, "normal" persona. which was definitely a win for the rest of us as we could see more depth & subtlety from him.

I think I must have known years ago that Martin had written the screenplay (adapted from CDB), but if I did, I had forgotten. Very impressive job he did: both writing AND acting. I'm not sure Steve Martin has ever been warmer, funnier, or more relatable.
Now she should do "Marty" from 1955. Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Screenplay Oscars that year. And it's a romcom. And it seems I'm about the only person under the age of 60 who's ever seen it.... But it's so good!

In one of my favorite Steve Martin Films, "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" he has black hair. The film is in black-and-white and is a parody of noir detective pictures, and was edited together with footage from classics from '40s and '50s woven into the story. It's pretty fun.

This has been my favourite romantic comedy since about 1990. I love Charlie's eccentricities, and I actually stole a few of his words on my first date when I was 14. It's a really lovely message about people who are maybe a little different, because a lot of the time it's our flaws which make us interesting.

(I think it was only on TV ,I've NEVER seen a dvd of it.) ..however 2 people have uploaded the movie to TH-cam ..Also there is a REAL interview with the troubled little girl on TH-cam too ..Very very disturbing . The movie is really unreal too ,the kid who plays her is a fantastic actress. Also have you seen 'Sybil' ? (Original 70s movie!) absolutely riveting performance depicting true story of woman with multiple personalities. Very moving .

One heartbreaking line for me was after she first asks C.D. about Chris and commenting about the 20 jokes: R: “It’s the first time I’ve seen anyone be brave.” C.D.: “Oh, I’ve been a lot braver since then.” Breaks my heart.
My family loved this when it came out. Ah, the golden age of movie rentals... It's funny and it has heart. Even the romantic rival isn't a bad guy, he's just not the right guy. Chris has looks and is well-meaning, but a bit of a disaster, otherwise, and C.D. is good at just about everything, but has a nose that could be hitting home runs at Fenway. It's nice to see this film is getting some love.

Few people know this, but it is in our minds with films in 1950 with José Ferrer and 1990 with Gérard Depardieu each playing Cyrano in a drama as he was in the 1600s. Using the play as their basis, his love interest was a Roxanne. This movie in 1987 took a comedic approach using the same ideas from the Cyrano play and put it into modern times.
An absolute riot of a Steve Martin comedy with Sir Michael Caine in his prime is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels where they play two devilish con artists. REALLY funny and clever.
I'm a big Steve Martin fan and this one of my very favorite films he's done ( He also wrote the screenplay). It's one of his best performances, and Daryl Hannah is absolutely radiant. The cinematography is beautiful, and it's funny! This is one of my comfort movies. Glad you enjoyed it. Excellent pick!

Besides Splash, Roxanne (Daryl Hannah) was also in The Blade Runner, The Grumpy Old Men movies, The Little Rascals, & Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2. Roxanne's friend was played by Shelley Duvall who was the mom on The Shining & played Cinderella in Rodgers & Hammerstein's version.
At this point I feel like Cassie needs to be protected from everything before like 2004 because it amazes me what she hasn't seen. I've always taken so many of these films for granted, part of the charm of her channel is seeing these films again through fresh eyes, without all the cultural baggage from the time of their release.
The one gag that has stuck in my mind for years. Buying a newspaper, and the headlines are so terrible that you pay to return it. Wonderful reaction - my eyes watered along with yours. Perfect mix of the older, zany Steve Martin (The Jerk is so silly, but in a great way) and a real rom-com. You should try some lighter fare, so that we can see your face light up again as it does here.
After seeing this as a child i went out of my way to act like that as much as possible, i'd act as crazy and over the top as i could just to make people laugh as much as i did when i saw it. was fun but i seem to have developed a bit of a reputation...lol
I absolutely loved this movie when I was a kid. Watched it many times. I actually haven't seen it in well over a decade, but it was wonderful to watch you watch it! Your channel and TBR Schmitt have become my two favorite reaction channels! this movie is a "modern" adapatation based on the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand -- you also have a closer adpatation french movie from 1990 with Gérard Depardieu
So I see Splash has been recommended a few times and heartily agree. It's a movie that would suit you so well you have to add it to your Patron polls. Another to consider that has Darryl Hannah in a slightly different role is Bladerunner. While it does have some romance there's not a whole heckuva lot of comedy so fair warning.
It's based on a turn of the last century play called Cyrano de Bergerac about a fellow with a big nose who is unbelievably talented, but is made fun of and underappreciated, and who helps a friend woo a beautiful wonan with romantic poetry that he writes for the guy, but then falls for her himself. The opening scene with the two jerks is a modern update to a swashbuckling swordfight which is what happens in the original play.
I just can't believe you were the first person to react to one of my favorites movies ever. This is a perfect movie for "Popcorn In Bed". Thank you so much. This movie is a hugely underrated tribute to "Cyrano de Bergerac" in the form of romantic comedy. C. Bales represents Cyrano (including his voluminous nose), Roxanne represents Roxane (the object of Cyrano's affection) and Chris represents Christian (rivaling with Cyrano for Roxane's love). Maybe this is not the best movie ever but it was performed with dignity, and in those days Steve Martin was at the top of his interpretive histrionism, for which he fits perfectly into the role of an intelligent man with a physical handicap who was accepting life with humor.

It's a fact but is it really a little known one? Anyone who counted would know which I'm sure a lot of people did if they watched the film more than once. I certainly did. Which is how I know he was up to 18 and did a total of 24 by the end.

@@carm3d Agreed. I believe it was probably also a reference to some of Steve’s stand-up or his Knotts Berry Farm days or similar. Every now and then in one of his movies you get some random bit of dialogue that feels like it’s an in-joke. Like in Planes, Trains and Automobiles when he tries to get people to sing the Three Pennies song. I think it’s a deliberate choice that harks back to some part of his past career. I’ve got his autobiography Born Standing Up. It’s a great read.
If you have Amazon Prime, you can watch the 1950 film of "Cyrano de Bergerac" which snagged Jose Ferrer a best actor Academy Award. Gerard Depardieu also has a film version in the original French from 1990 and Kevin Kline has a recorded Broadway production of the play from 2007.

You are correct that it was filmed in Nelson B.C. I'm from the UK and my best friend emigrated to Vancouver in 1994. In 1995 I visited him and we did a camping trip from Burnaby to Nelson purely to track down a few locations from this movie. We found the street in the opening scene and the firehouse amongst others. To this day we still use so many quotes from this movie. As other people have mentioned it was Steve Martin's adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac which is why his character (C.D. Bales) has the same initials.
Another great Steve Martin film is called 'Bowfinger' 1999. Not only does it have 'Steve Martin' it has 'Eddie Murphy', 'Heather Graham', and 'Christine Baranski' in the film. It's just a great satire. Definitely should check it out.
I totally agree with you on Bowfinger. Not only is it a genuinely funny movie but it is extremely clever and knowledgeable of its targets. The Jerk is also genuinely funny but in a broad manner. I will watch both when they air on television but Bowfinger is my favorite of the two. Both excellent suggestions to watch.

Chunksaflyin, I watched A Simple Twist of Fate and throughout the entire film, I was "I know this story." It wasn't until I saw based on Silas Marner at the end that I figured it out. Great Adaptation.

The original film was "Cyrano de Bergerac" (1950) with Jose Ferrer, who won an Oscar for his performance as Cyrano...a GREAT film with GREAT performances...my favorite romance...it always brings me to tears. I highly recommend it, and guarantee that you'll LOVE it.

I don't get it either - it's such a well done movie and not a stereotypical teen romance. Most people just think of the boombox scene, but they think it's an example of stalking because of some mandela effect where everyone thinks Lloyd was standing outside Diane's window. But if you look at the background he's actually in the parks near her house and not trespassing at all. I think Lloyd Dobler has been done wrong and he and Diane actually have one of the healthiest teen romances on film.
This movie as well as most versions of Cyrano just makes me feel lonely in the end. Makes me wish the world worked like that. I loved the story after reading the book and seeing multiple film versions in high school because I could relate so much but now it's just too painful to make me think about old heartaches. I feel like the world doesn't understand or appreciate just how much lonely people desire romance.

Now you need to watch the original it is based on: Cyrano de Bergerac, a classic French play (late 19th C) set in the 17th C. It has been made into a few films, but the best is the 1990 version with Gerard Depardieu. A superb, sweeping, funny, action-packed, romantic epic. The reason the language is too much in this American version is because they have not established the context properly; the original involves the theatre and literature and poetry, so the language makes sense (and needless to say, leaves the script of this Steve Martin version greatly wanting).
@Retro Storm Perhaps he should rather have said, "...raised on STORIES in books and great themes of character;" this was still the age when stories were being told by people who grew up READING stories (and using their imaginations while reading), rather than SHOWING stories (many of them rehashed from older movies) like today.
Ok, now that you've seen Roxanne and loved it, you need to watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. And after that, you gotta watch Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. No actor was ever in a better trio of movies in such a short span. Steve Martin was on fire in the late 80s.

I remember Steve Martin doing late night interviews for the promo for this movie back in 1987. He told a funny story while filming this movie. Steve walked into a real local "biker" bar while in full makeup and sat at the bar. This was off set. He ordered a drink and the biker who was sitting next to Steve turned and asked him "why the long face buddy"?
I remember that.

Yep, I remember him talking about that on some talk show. I believe he mentioned first that they made a lot of jokes among everyone on set about the nose, but THAT one comment from a biker was to him the funniest one. I just love the concept of a regular someone being able to come up with something off the cuff that cracks up Steve Martin.

Cyrano did the same take-down of a guy who insulted his nose in a crowded theater. After reeling off several more colorful insults, the greatest swordsman in all of Europe further schooled the crowd and the bully. "Cyrano ..." is a fixture by my couch.
Another underrated Steve Martin movie is the movie called
All Of Me (1984). The best premise I can give you, watch Steve Martin play half himself and half Lily Tomlin. Excellent comedy.

for me this is when Steve pivoted from being the wacky, zany, over-the-top standup comic & into a more mature, "normal" persona. which was definitely a win for the rest of us as we could see more depth & subtlety from him.
Yeah. This is when he left his “Jerk” type movies behind. Although, he somewhat played it straight in All of Me with Lily Tomlin.
He had a very serious role in 90’s with A Simple Twist Of Fate (1994). I think it was a very good movie he co-wrote as well as played the lead

Steve Martin adapted it from the French play Cyrano DeBergerac (MUCH happier ending here) and did such an amazing job, he’s not just an amazing performer but he’s also actually quite a good writer with a bunch of screenplays and plays under his belt, thank you for reacting to this overlooked gem!!

In one of my favorite Steve Martin Films, "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" he has black hair. The film is in black-and-white and is a parody of noir detective pictures, and was edited together with footage from classics from '40s and '50s woven into the story. It's pretty fun.

This has been my favourite romantic comedy since about 1990. I love Charlie's eccentricities, and I actually stole a few of his words on my first date when I was 14. It's a really lovely message about people who are maybe a little different, because a lot of the time it's our flaws which make us interesting.
Another movie that that will pull on your heart strings is "Untamed Heart" starring Christian Slater and Marisa Tomei.

(I think it was only on TV ,I've NEVER seen a dvd of it.) ..however 2 people have uploaded the movie to TH-cam ..Also there is a REAL interview with the troubled little girl on TH-cam too ..Very very disturbing . The movie is really unreal too ,the kid who plays her is a fantastic actress. Also have you seen 'Sybil' ? (Original 70s movie!) absolutely riveting performance depicting true story of woman with multiple personalities. Very moving .

It's funny and it has heart. Even the romantic rival isn't a bad guy, he's just not the right guy. Chris has looks and is well-meaning, but a bit of a disaster, otherwise, and C.D. is good at just about everything, but has a nose that could be hitting home runs at Fenway.
It's nice to see this film is getting some love.
Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac was a real French novelist, playwright, epistolarian, and duelist in the early 1600s. A play, Cyrano de Bergerac, was written in 1897. Few people know this, but it is in our minds with films in 1950 with José Ferrer and 1990 with Gérard Depardieu each playing Cyrano in a drama as he was in the 1600s. Using the play as their basis, his love interest was a Roxanne. This movie in 1987 took a comedic approach using the same ideas from the Cyrano play and put it into modern times.
An absolute riot of a Steve Martin comedy with Sir Michael Caine in his prime is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels where they play two devilish con artists. REALLY funny and clever.
I'm a big Steve Martin fan and this one of my very favorite films he's done ( He also wrote the screenplay). It's one of his best performances, and Daryl Hannah is absolutely radiant. The cinematography is beautiful, and it's funny! This is one of my comfort movies. Glad you enjoyed it. Excellent pick!

Besides Splash, Roxanne (Daryl Hannah) was also in The Blade Runner, The Grumpy Old Men movies, The Little Rascals, & Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2. Roxanne's friend was played by Shelley Duvall who was the mom on The Shining & played Cinderella in Rodgers & Hammerstein's version.

At this point I feel like Cassie needs to be protected from everything before like 2004 because it amazes me what she hasn't seen. I've always taken so many of these films for granted, part of the charm of her channel is seeing these films again through fresh eyes, without all the cultural baggage from the time of their release.
The one gag that has stuck in my mind for years. Buying a newspaper, and the headlines are so terrible that you pay to return it.
Wonderful reaction - my eyes watered along with yours. Perfect mix of the older, zany Steve Martin (The Jerk is so silly, but in a great way) and a real rom-com. You should try some lighter fare, so that we can see your face light up again as it does here.

So I see Splash has been recommended a few times and heartily agree. It's a movie that would suit you so well you have to add it to your Patron polls. Another to consider that has Darryl Hannah in a slightly different role is Bladerunner. While it does have some romance there's not a whole heckuva lot of comedy so fair warning.

One of my all-time favorite movies! So glad someone is finally reacting to it!
It's based on a turn of the last century play called Cyrano de Bergerac about a fellow with a big nose who is unbelievably talented, but is made fun of and underappreciated, and who helps a friend woo a beautiful wonan with romantic poetry that he writes for the guy, but then falls for her himself. The opening scene with the two jerks is a modern update to a swashbuckling swordfight which is what happens in the original play.
Cyranno was real. He was a soldier, master swordsman, poet, credited with an early science fiction story, etc from 1600s France.
This is going to be just her cup of tea!

This movie is a hugely underrated tribute to "Cyrano de Bergerac" in the form of romantic comedy. C. Bales represents Cyrano (including his voluminous nose), Roxanne represents Roxane (the object of Cyrano's affection) and Chris represents Christian (rivaling with Cyrano for Roxane's love).
Maybe this is not the best movie ever but it was performed with dignity, and in those days Steve Martin was at the top of his interpretive histrionism, for which he fits perfectly into the role of an intelligent man with a physical handicap who was accepting life with humor.
Totally need to watch planes ✈️, trains 🚂, and automobiles 🚗 now lol. Such a great Steve Martin and John Candy movie.

Little known fact: When CD asks how many insults he's done, one of his firefighters tells him 14. In fact, he had done 19, so after six more he actually came up with 25 insults better than "big nose."

Agreed. I believe it was probably also a reference to some of Steve’s stand-up or his Knotts Berry Farm days or similar.
Every now and then in one of his movies you get some random bit of dialogue that feels like it’s an in-joke. Like in Planes, Trains and Automobiles when he tries to get people to sing the Three Pennies song. I think it’s a deliberate choice that harks back to some part of his past career.
I’ve got his autobiography Born Standing Up. It’s a great read.

If you have Amazon Prime, you can watch the 1950 film of "Cyrano de Bergerac" which snagged Jose Ferrer a best actor Academy Award. Gerard Depardieu also has a film version in the original French from 1990 and Kevin Kline has a recorded Broadway production of the play from 2007.

Steve Martin was the biggest stand up comedian of the late 70's-25,000 people would come to watch him - he even won a Grammy award . His funniest movies are " The Jerk " , All Of Me ", and "Planes, Trains, And Automobiles ", but there are several other hilarious ones . He wrote " Roxanne ", its his his interpretation of " Cyano De Bergerac ", a famous play .

I'm from the UK and my best friend emigrated to Vancouver in 1994. In 1995 I visited him and we did a camping trip from Burnaby to Nelson purely to track down a few locations from this movie. We found the street in the opening scene and the firehouse amongst others.
To this day we still use so many quotes from this movie.
As other people have mentioned it was Steve Martin's adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac which is why his character (C.D. Bales) has the same initials.
Another great Steve Martin film is called 'Bowfinger' 1999. Not only does it have 'Steve Martin' it has 'Eddie Murphy', 'Heather Graham', and 'Christine Baranski' in the film. It's just a great satire. Definitely should check it out.

I totally agree with you on Bowfinger. Not only is it a genuinely funny movie but it is extremely clever and knowledgeable of its targets. The Jerk is also genuinely funny but in a broad manner. I will watch both when they air on television but Bowfinger is my favorite of the two. Both excellent suggestions to watch.

The original film was "Cyrano de Bergerac" (1950) with Jose Ferrer, who won an Oscar for his performance as Cyrano...a GREAT film with GREAT performances...my favorite romance...it always brings me to tears. I highly recommend it, and guarantee that you'll LOVE it.

I don't get it either - it's such a well done movie and not a stereotypical teen romance. Most people just think of the boombox scene, but they think it's an example of stalking because of some mandela effect where everyone thinks Lloyd was standing outside Diane's window. This movie as well as most versions of Cyrano just makes me feel lonely in the end. Makes me wish the world worked like that. I loved the story after reading the book and seeing multiple film versions in high school because I could relate so much but now it's just too painful to make me think about old heartaches. I feel like the world doesn't understand or appreciate just how much lonely people desire romance.

Now you need to watch the original it is based on: Cyrano de Bergerac, a classic French play (late 19th C) set in the 17th C. It has been made into a few films, but the best is the 1990 version with Gerard Depardieu. A superb, sweeping, funny, action-packed, romantic epic. The reason the language is too much in this American version is because they have not established the context properly; the original involves the theatre and literature and poetry, so the language makes sense (and needless to say, leaves the script of this Steve Martin version greatly wanting).

@Retro Storm Perhaps he should rather have said, "...raised on STORIES in books and great themes of character;" this was still the age when stories were being told by people who grew up READING stories (and using their imaginations while reading), rather than SHOWING stories (many of them rehashed from older movies) like today.

Ok, now that you've seen Roxanne and loved it, you need to watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. And after that, you gotta watch Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. No actor was ever in a better trio of movies in such a short span. Steve Martin was on fire in the late 80s.
