Japan’s really skilled at whatever sport they pick up. The women’s soccer team was killing it at World Cup. The men’s volleyball team is lb for lb the most skilled at that sport. Japanese boxers are also amazing. Shit, even skateboarding has been dominated by the Japanese.

It's quite obvious seeing volleyball, basketball, baseball, and soccer, the Japanese players (men & women) are more skilled than Chinese or Korean teams. China has always relied on height for the past 20 years. It wasn't like that in the 80's-90's where Chinese players were more skilled and fearless without the proper state funding.

Not sure if you guys heard of Babymetal (and others like Bandmaid, Nemophilia, Maximum The Hormone, Unlucky Morpheus, etc) but the Japanese are killing it in the heavy metal and rock scene too. In my candid opinion it really comes down to their culture - an extremely high regard for craftsmanship and discipline. Whatever they set out to do, they simply have tunnel vision in achieving perfection. Damn their women's soccer team is like watching origami being demonstrated in the football pitch. Had they played Sweden another 5 or 10 mins more, they were going to win against opponents far more athletic. It's like their 5'6"" point guard in the latest FIBA. It's basically poetry in motion.

Haven’t heard of these bands before. It’s quite refreshing to hear good metal (or some fusion with metal) music with non-(weird or old) white dude on lead vocals (and other instruments). On YT you see a bunch of sexy white girls playing guitar and they get their millions of views, good for them. But it’s a whole ‘nother level to be in a band that does crazy good original stuff.

If they are specifically recruiting height outliers and then putting them in basketball camps from a young age, they are more than likely poorly socialized in general. Also, not sure how many of them are single children but there are studies on how the best athletes tend to be younger siblings. If you grow up in a single child household you don’t get the benefit of the constant competition, cooperation, socialization, conflict management, etc, you get from having a sibling. Also, when you have an older aibling you get the advantage of learning from their mistakes and adopting their skills earlier than they did.

This is not true. It's actually more of the opposite.
Chinese fans don't become national team players , so who they like is irrelevant.
I think the relative lack of passion is the key. A lot of Chinese players suffer from the Yi Jian lian syndrome. Yi was athletic, could shoot, was very strong. But he couldn't quite put it all together to be a great player. That's where passion would've filled the gaps and refined his game to be great.

Ccomes down to socio economics and cultural discipline. 50/50.
Japan have had several generations of stable standard of living...where you can focus on your dreams. Then culturally, they promote strict discipline in reaching your dreams.
Its very simple. This is it.
Its why they excel at many many many things.
I used to say..."Japanese bite but they at least bite right." They go haaard into the discipline of deep study into their passions. Deep, bruh ..deep.
They have won 1st place in more underground things like international salsa dance, salsa music, jamaican ragga dance queens, ska music battles, DMC DJ battle compeitions, among all the other commercial accolades. They go deep. To the point of moving to the country to study and learn. They even have cholos in LA that are pretty well respected!
You cant get to that level unless your society is stable. You wont go as hard or deep unless you have the passion and discipline to take the sacrifice for your dream.
    Japan has that perfect mix.

On the other hand, China is a couple of generations behind Japan in terms of socioeconomic stability. So the Chinese still feel forced into things they don't care about, based on their supposed talents when younger.
IMO, the Asians will eventually catch up to the Americans and the Europeans in sports, but the catch is that it's also dependent on whether the Japanese and the Chinese are still willing to have babies and children. If birth rates continue to fall, neither the Japanese nor the Chinese will ever really catch up, and all that's left is just a little haughty Asian pride.

I think Chinese team sports sucks because various reason. First, Chinese education system really does not provide enough support for team sports. Most of guys in my middle school love to play basketball. It was rare to see empty space at basketball court after class. I remembered even I only had two PE classes per week but I precious every minutes in the basketball court. Also, our PE teacher just lack of passion for his classes and he does not teach any fundamental soccer and basketball knowledge to students even he known students love to play basketball. I learned professional basketball rules and received decent basketball training in American's high school . Second, Chinese family does not want their kids to be a professional basketball player. They prefer their kids to spent time at math camp rather than basketball training. They want their kids to find a secure and stable job in the future, to become a professional basketball player just too risky and unpredictable for them. For example, most of my cousins are tall and strong even my younger brother reached 5.8 when he was 6th grade. But no one in my family want them to play basketball or soccer. I still remembered my younger brother touched the rim when he was in 7th grade.......Third, state need to invest more money into basketball tournament, youth training and basketball infrastructures. China lack of professional basketball coach and trainer.

China VS Philippines became really political here, but China was expected to win so it was a total shock that the Philippines wiped the floor with them, the play style of China was just not a good match to the Philippine one; as far as Japan, how the monkeys in hell did that happen, for the Philippines and China, the game was everything, China had physically better dudes while the Philippines can always tap its physically great diaspora, Japan on the other hand even with their import players are not really a match physically to China and South Korea or even the Philippines with its diaspora players.
All in all the Filipinos are happy for beating team China, that is all that goes in our heads right now and team Japan is outside our radars for all its worth.

China sucks at Team Sports but excel at individual sports. Their athletics program (which is to choose attributes) does not translate to team sports.

What is wrong with him being half? That is like saying anyone who is a halfie does not count. He can represent whichever country he wants to represent.

i think one of the reason why china is dominant in basketball before is that nobody can match up their size. Is like haddadi of iran. China didnt dominate asia by 3 point shooting or passing. They just have some more bigger taller talented players in basketball. The sout koreans are great in shooting the basket, Japanese are quicker and faster, Philippines has the dribble drive and ball handling, The middle eastern teams have the physicality. And China have the size advantage in all them. And in the fiba court you need height and size. You can't play small ball like philippines or USA. Because its a smaller court compared to nba. You will not succeed

But Japan is declining in MMA, if they don't improve their birth rate, they will run out of young people for sport in the future. And China have big and athletic players but they lack creativity to get their own shots. Yi Jianlian have the athleticism but can't create his own shot, no moves, or creativity like Yao Ming.

A decade ago, China (+Iran) were the clear cut best basketball teams in Asia. Not sure what happened since then. Are the Chinese men getting more feminine for the ladies (as what Xi Jinping claims)?
