  • Want (or need) to write more words - watch this video to see how I tripled the number of words I was writing per week!
    Writing a literature review, a dissertation or an essay can be a long process, and it can be tough to keep focused. I was writing 1000 words a week for my PhD lit review until I made these 5 changes and my words per week suddenly jumped to 3000! My attention has been much better and I have really gotten into my writing - and at this rate, I'll be done my first draft by the end of this week.
    If you are struggling to find your focus in the midst of a project, try implementing these few tips and see that word count go up. You can do it!

    Great tips! I once heard something about '250 words a day'. I'm still struggling with editing my co-authored lit review, mostly because research paper 1 got in the way ;) (almost there!)
    I'm in Belgium. I've seen Geordie Shore on Mtv while flipping through channels. Your accent sounds a bit 'Geordie', no? Weird to see someone talking with such accent knowing the person talking now actually does have brains! :D

      Thank you! 250 words a day is a good average - some days I have written that, others way more and others none! Good luck with the review.

    Hi Julia, another brilliant video. I’ve been watching all ur tips and tricks for the thesis and making notes before I start my PhD. I had a quick question - would you be open to making a video on how to read scientific paper effectively or how u read it?! I was wondering how to do so without it taking forever (P.S. I sometimes fall asleep and I’m hoping this isn’t a weird thing for a future scientist to say out loud!). Thanks a mil for all the effort.

      Hi! Thank you so much! Ooooo that is a good topic and one I can definitely cover. I used to ALWAYS fall asleep! Once you are used to them, they get much easier to get through, I promise!

      Julia Ravey Science I was also wondering if I could give u a few suggestions for videos (without it looking like harassment or borderline maniacal 😬😬!):
      1) How to read a research paper efficiently? 2) What stat analysis tests should we use and how to do them? 3)How to use graph pad (coz I have it but have zero idea on how to use it!) 4) What are some of the softwares and/or apps that u think are most essential for a PhD to have?
      Thanks a mil for doing these videos. I think they are absolutely awesome (u may be my scientist soul mate!).
      I think u are doing a wonderful job as a sci communicator! Loads of love and hope u ace ur thesis and PhD❤️❤️😘😘

    I’m doing my MSc dissertation and I don’t know where to start. Would you recommend doing the reading first for the introduction, then writing the introduction up and so on for each chapter??? Or do the reading for all the sections first and then the write up altogether ?

    • @juliaraveyscience
      @juliaraveyscience  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If I were you, I would read first - lots of background reading and make short notes (don't go too overboard - I used to and it would make a paper take hours to read!). Start with a good review (recent if possible) on your topic and from there, you should find lots of relevant primary papers. Then once you have a good ground, I would roughly plan the sections you want to write about, then read papers for these and write them in as you go!

    I’m wondering whether 25min isn’t too short for you to get into work. I’ve been trying 50min work with 10min break. It would be nice if you could tell me why you stick with 25min. Thanks!

    • @juliaraveyscience
      @juliaraveyscience  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it really depends on your preference! I do 25 because I can convince my brain to start if it is a short period of time haha. If the 25 mins ends and I am still in flow, I skip that 5 min break, go for another 25mins and then take a 10 minute break! So I do what you do sometimes too :)

    Hi Julia
    I'm a 49yo having a mid life crisis! Currently doing MSc Victimology and research methods then onto PhD next year. Massive learning curves for me with all this social media, mendeley etc (,i love it) - IT has certainly moved on since I last studied! Anyway, am enjoying your videos, getting lots of tips, thank you. Just wondering what Podcasts you'd recommend for productivity please and also if you have any suggestions for NT brains, like mine? And keep going, you are extremely engaging. Thank you

      Thank you so much!! Good luck with your Masters and PhD - you'll be great. A really good podcast I listened to last year was The Perfectionism Project. If you identity with fear of failure and so find it tough to get going, it is a great one!

    Hi! Thanks so much for your videos, they're really helpful and relatable. Sadly, I'm just a nocturnal. In one of your videos you've mentioned that you prefer to work from cafes, so here is a suggestion I thought you might find useful: mynoise.net, Cafe Restaurant one!
    That website is just amazing for anyone who likes to listen something without lyrics for focus, who is suffering from ADHD, who needs to calm down etc. Anyway, hope you give it a go, explore and find it useful as me! xx

      Thank you so much! It is completely fine to be nocturnal (my partner is!) - just have to make a routine around those best hours for you when you are writing.
      And thank you for the link! I will give that a go today - I miss cafes so much!
