  • In this video I am doing a SIMULATION of how a Orchestra Audition works (more or less). The Orchestral Excertps I am performing in this video are very popular for Principal Cello positions. The repertory depends from orchestra to orchestra. In this case here I opened up www.musicalchairs.info, picked an random audition and studied the pieces.
    Hope you enjoy!

      @hansgrau6635 Ah ok, I see! That’s the problem with typing things, you cannot see the person and sometimes misunderstand. It hurts when you play a good audition, and then a joke like this, because unfortunately I heard it so often. Now I can handle your opinion. Ignore my misunderstanding!

    Sound in haydn is really neat. But rythm is just not there.
    Of course phrasing is very important, but I think that in such transparent early age music we cannot afford to create phrases by changing durations (especially if we do not compensate for them later)
    Sounds nice but not in style in my opinion
    It's funny, but I think that the approach to phrasing in early age music like Haydn and Mozart is very similar to Shostakovich (when performing which it is very important to play very accurately rhythmically, like a robot, otherwise the music simply breaks under its own weight, so to speak)
    I apologize for the criticism, as far as I can see from the comments it is customary to only praise, but I am currently working on this concert and I decided that it would be appropriate to share my opinion.
    Sorry for my bad eng.

    • @IliaLaporevcellist
      @IliaLaporevcellist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! First of all, thanks for watching. Both praise and constructive criticism is great, just as you did! So thank you for that. If I may now to give my opinion about Haydn. Maybe you are right, although I have my doubts about it. It all depends on a lot of things. First of all, personal taste. Me, for instance, I can’t stand when someone plays this concerto perfectly in rhythm, but no soul into it (this concerto is very lyrical, it’s almost like an opera). I’ve heard numerous times people that play this perfect, but I want to leave the hall or stop the recording after the exposition. As I mentioned before, this is a very lyrical concerto, so we must sing. So if we, cellists, should play this perfectly in rhythm, why can singers take their time, breath in Figaro, Magic Flute and other works? Also, if it’s for orchestra audition tutti: then yes, you are right. But I only apply for principal cello, and my way of playing never changed, and that has led me to three or four wins as a Cello Solo. In the London Philharmonic Orchestra, where I used to play sometimes, they told me there is nothing wrong to add a personal touch in the classical concertos, and this is a world class orchestra. As you are working now in this concerto, take my suggestions under question mark and observe, what works well, what not. Remember, you are making music, and not just perfection. That is just wrong. Of course, if you are applying for orchestra audition, then yes, rhythm should be there, specially for tutti. If for principal cello, no problem to add a little personal touch (at the end, you are the soloist!). If it’s for a performance, then you can be even more free. Again, all about personal taste. I wish you lots of fun and journey with this marvellous piece! I highly recommend you to listen Truls Mork playing this concerto as a inspiration! And thank you again for your comment, highly appreciated and a thing I can keep in mind next time when I have to play! Ps. Your English is great!
