I'm really enjoying these videos. I'm a huge cut flower fan and live in the NE of England so it's great to see what you grow and thrives near by.
    Few things, Sea Weed.
You usually have to get permission from the council to take the seaweed. I've never heard anyone say they've been refused permission. You need to give it a good rinse to get rig of any salts etc. Be aware that you will find LOADS of fishing wire in with it.
You can either use it as a mulch just by chucking it on the surface or you can use a lawn mower and chop it up smaller and mulch it that way. You can also make your own seaweed feed by simply putting some in a water butt and filling it with water. Leave it a few weeks and then just use a half cup measure per watering can.
As for the thistle, it's creeping thistle you have. Spreads very similar to couch grass. If you used a rotarvator at some point in there, you've made the issue worse. Chops the roots up and spreads them across the bed. Each root cutting forms a new weed.
You can either weed kill the bed come the back end of the season or keep digging them out when you see then appearing. Keep denying them light they will eventually die off.
    Good luck!

    • @bloomandgray
      @bloomandgray  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you for the info! I will try a few things with the seaweed if I can manage to get plenty!
I haven’t ever rotavated or really disturbed the soil in the polytunnel as it’s always been no dig which is why I’m a little confused by it! It could be because I’m a little negligent sometimes when it comes to weeding and they’ve self seeded 🤷‍♀️ we’ll have to see if I can weaken them by continuing to pull them up. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

You can definitely harvest seaweed from the beach but you can’t take the attached and still growing stuff. When we first got our allotment it was amended clay so we dug in loads of seaweed. My other half would spend the winter hoping for stormy weather because that’s when loads washes up! You can use it as a mulch on top but don’t plant seedlings into it because it is too salty. Often better to sling it on top in winter and autumn so the salt disappears by planting time. It is super-nutritious and one of the few thing in life that is free!

As a boy I lived in Oregon on the U.S. West coast. My mother was a scientist working on her Phd on molecular biology and plant pathology. We used to take trips to the coast to collect kelp for our garden. We sundried the kelp right on the lawn out back until it was crispy and then broke it up with shovels in wheelbarrow. We kids fed the adults the kelp as they broke it up. Lol read your comment and missed first 3 minutes of video typing this, back to watching.

I don’t use heat mats either and my seeds germinate with no problem. I do put my trays under grow lights as soon as I plant, except for those seeds that require dark to germinate of course. The lights seem to help keep the soil warm, which helps with germination. Not necessarily recommending that, just saying what works for me. Beautiful dahlias BTW!

I’ve had lovely dahlias from seed, they’re very easy to grow and you can dig the tubers from the ones you do like - very inexpensive way to grow and increase your stock. I’ve got a lot of tubers coming this spring, but I’ll be micro scale overall, so cost isn’t such a thing. I know time is so scarce when farming and I’m sure you did consider this, but there’s always the option to sell the tubers that you don’t like, to someone who does. ?? Just a thought. Love your channel. Laughed out loud at the underground thistle conspiracy!

How about hanging ladders (flat offcouse) in the polytunnel for extra growing space? They are strong, easy to hang up and often not in use😉

Have you rotovated inside the tunnel? I just wonder if you've ended up chopping up some thistle roots to make loads of baby thistle plants....😬 Always the risk with rotovating where there are perennial weeds, I learnt that the hard way on my couch-grass-filled-allotment! Hopefully by digging it out by hand you're weakening what's left.

I agree with you to a point on the peat because I like to look at ways to adjust our impact on the planet. I think oil is a horrible way to fuel our lives as it is lubricating the crust of our planet the same as engines. For just a small perspective though as to what impact we have had on peat bogs. The total acreage of England and Wales is around 40 million. Canada has 25% of the worlds peatlands at 281 million acres. At our current rate of consumption we will never use it all even if our population were to expand 5000% and all use peat for starting seeds.
"The Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association, representing 14 major producers, says that the industry has harvested approximately 73,000 acres out of 280 million acres of the country’s peatlands and that the amount taken each year is a fraction of the quantity that is naturally generated in undisturbed bogs.
Paul Short, the group’s president, said that for the past 10 years, producers have been restoring harvested bogs by allowing them to re-flood and seeding them with shredded moss grafts that grow and knit together. The moss covers the harvest site within five years, he said, and the bog is “back to a near-natural condition within 10 to 15 years,” he said.
So just a little bit of insight as to the state of the worlds peat as a resource. Europeans used peat as a fuel source for a long time which was far more detrimental to the environment than gardeners or even nurseries. Just a little insight as to where we all stand with peat and its sustainable harvest. :)
