Elegy for a mountain town (one last old time tune)

- I used to visit this town filled with old-time music when I was growing up, and I loved it. Always been a fan of old-time and folk music. Went there last year for a visit and sat in on one of the many jam circles that they have in the town. It was beautiful - they played one song after another, had this small town old person banter, one even did a poetic reading of some old country ballad. Then someone made an offhanded remark about death, and that somehow lead to a full-blown hate-filled rant about the country and some of the people in it. They talked about committing actual violence against those groups. You have to wonder how such beautiful moments can come from people who don’t listen to the words they’re singing. The opinions of most in my state, and that area especially, are no secret, but I had never seen it so blatant in that town until then. Here’s a song about that town.
Chords are G, C, G, D (and sometimes D7) then back to G for the verses. Chorus is C, G, D (and sometimes D7), G.
Lyrics:
My great-grandad played the fiddle
It’s buried with him now
I heard him once play Red Wing
Before the lightning struck his house.
We’d play at that RV park
Couple miles from my home.
They let me play harmonica,
Now I play to his bones.
This mountain lost its charm
Before I ever walked the earth
When they chased off all the hippies,
Turned to life support and dirt.
Old time tunes and anthems
Echo off the valley hills
While they struggle with economy,
The price of gas, and pills.
But they sing about the hard times
Like the Appalachians did.
They talk of dying craft
Because they can’t talk to their kids.
There’s things you just don’t talk about -
You come here for the view,
And for all the old-time circles
Playing one last old-time tune.
This town came together,
They put music in the schools.
They couldn’t save their history,
So they wrote it in the rules.
The art’s a thing of beauty
When you hear it in the air
But I never see the young folks
Play with old ones on the square.
And I went up to play once,
They said, “Keep this thing alive -
Or no one else will sing here
after all of us have died.
They played with love and passion of
The things that God creates,
Then they said they carry guns
In case the find someone God hates.
And they sing about the savior,
They sing about moonshine.
Dry county Baptist farmers
Tap their feet to keep the time
Of a world they think they left behind
Too long ago, too soon,
But it’s just the old-time men
Singing one last old-time tune.
How do you love somebody
If you can’t love them whole?
If your heavens don’t align,
And if it hurts inside your soul?
Stand up from the bench
And leave the dusty room
To the sound of old-time men
Playing one last old-time tune.
