Did I just find a Murder Weapon? No, probably not... but it felt like I had. Mudlarking adventure.

  • In my quest to explore all of my local rivers, including the ones that run through rough areas... I went to the place featured in this video, and stumbled upon lots of evidence; evidence of littering, and of theft, and of drug abuse, and maybe even of murder!
    I didn't find much in the way of historical artifacts, but I hope the video result of what I did find is enjoyable.

    I've learned from helpful viewers that thankfully no, I probably didn't find a murder weapon. Although it did hold live bullets (according to the police sargeant), and may well have been used in a crime (perhaps armed robbery, or a mugging); it could not have been fired. It certainly felt like I was finding a potential murder weapon, I'm glad that it wasn't.

    I am so pleased to have come across your video's Tom, I live right on a river in Northumberland in the same place I grew up as a child.The river was our prime source of entertainment, fishing with nets, building rafts out of anything we could lay our hands on. Swimming, makeshift Tarzan swings, and on many occasions coming to the rescue of many wildlife that were injured,or distressed. Our finds and treasures from the river beds got us so excited, We built dens in old bomb shelters and Lord Collingwood's watch tower we would decorate with dumped chairs and old carpet.How we took pride in our makeshift humble abodes, and very territorial with lookout Windows for any approaching enemy! And as dusk descended upon us we would sit around watching the bats flying,and squeaking high pitched sounds, giving us the perfect setting to recite the jabberwocky, the weird stone of Brisingamen. We were always on the lookout for our Stig of the dump,we often scared ourselves so silly we would run home in terror.Such happy days. And because of mud larking video's such as yours and others I have returned to the river once again in search of treasure and adventure, for when you are wading up a centre of a river alone it is a different viewpoint that those up on the bank side do not see. So aswell as mud larking, I bought a powerful magnet and I fish out any abandoned or discarded metal, or iron objects, and for all our river is relatively clean, It also gives me a sense of pride and pleasure to clear out any trash.It is very therapeutic and calming too to be alone with your thoughts and nature, and anybody who is shy of doing a bit mud larking should get out there, I'm sure they will come to love it, Sometimes I have complete solitude,and other times I have inquisitive souls intrigued to find a woman wading up a river throwing out a magnet on a rope, or children wanting to help to pull out old bike frames with me, so it can be a unsocial or social hobby depending where you decide to go that day. Keep sharing your video's Tom, you have a knack with the camera and editing to make it more entertaining for viewers, something I couldn't do.

      Your description of your childhood is at least 75% the same as mine! Most of the differences are only geographic. I'm glad my videos are inspiring people back to the rivers, just as I was inspired by other mudlarking video makers. I hope you get some good finds. I'm hoping to get up to the Northumberland coast sometime for some fossilhunting, and hoping to get a decent magnet soon to give magnet fishing a try. Thanks Mandy, for a lovely comment, and lovely encouragement.

      I am looking forward to getting out more once the weather picks up, and there are plenty of river to explore, as well as other areas in the North. With magnet fishing you don't usually have a visual straightaway on what it has latched onto, so for a moment there is a mix of trepidation, and excitement while you pull the rope in to discover your find. But my imagination runs riot to ascertain what is, what was its purpose, or the person who used it, all good fun.. I too have small fossils in my home, and it would be nice to find some more, so happy hunting Tom for when you come North, I will look forward to seeing the video of anything you discover 😀

    Hello from USA. Thank you for your efforts in your mudlarking adventures and taking us along. The uploads and commentary are very interesting and I look forward to seeing your uploads notifications. I am amazed that people think that by throwing something in the river it will be "washed" away, never to be found or considered again. The trash, the bicycles. Yes, finding the gun is upsetting; could tell you didn't like finding it. Hope you will keep us posted on the, probably unpleasant, outcome. Hang in there.

    I found a gun in the side yard of a mental health facility that I was working at in Portland, Oregon. It looked to as it had been tossed over our privacy fence. I know that feeling one has when finding a GUN. It’s too real. Unfortunately, finding drug paraphernalia, usually hypodermics, is so common that my 9 year old grandson knows to look before he walks in his favorite neighborhood park. Says something about the human condition, what we discard. I’m glad you found the gun and you were unharmed instead of someone’s grandson finding it. Thanks for the videos.

    Hey, I super love your narration style and your videos in general. Thank you for posting them, I hope you keep doing so for the foreseeable future! I’m from the NW of the US, and our rivers have very very few historical artifacts dating more than 200 years or so, although rich in actual pretty stones (agate, nephrite, lots of petrified wood, jasper, sandstone mixes, basalt of course). I wish I could walk down a river and find pipe stems and teapot necks! You have a similar eye as I do for things that are both objectively trash and somehow worth appreciating anyway.

    • @tomburleigh9261
      @tomburleigh9261  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks oddsweet. The NW of the US is certainly high on the long list of places I'd like to visit one day; for the rivers, the woods, the rain and the adventures that could be had there. Rocks were the first thing I collected, I was limited here but still found some wonderful things, including fossils, meteorites, and a few totally out of their natural habitat, and as a result; badly malformed crystals (like an amathyst with only one discernable facet). I hope to be doing at least 6 more videos that I've already recorded; and I love going out mudlarking, so hopefully many more after.

    Those blasted lady bug imitators are miserable here in the Midwest as well. Decent looking gun, not sure why it upset you so, but ...are they illegal there or something? It probably was used in a crime. Oh well. It happens. Pretty cool finds all in all, and not at all grim! It was gentle and babbling brook with man made sides, and a rock bottom, all of which are completely unusual in my neck of the woods. It looks so very old and medieval. So shallow and unusual. Other than the large rivers that are managed here, most rivers and creeks just wind around however they naturally do, with mud and gravel bottoms. No big stones, and no bricked walls. So fascinating! Thank you for another good adventure.

      Hi Maureen, yes... handguns are illegal in most of the UK (Northern Ireland being the exception), and gun crime is fairly rare. I was a little shook by finding it because of the way my imagination works, which gave me a blast of every possible type of crime that the gun might have been used in, all at once, and me in every role; victim and perp. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, I hope to go back there one day and finish the planned route I meant to take, including the tunnel under the chocolate factory.

    That is the time we live in now. Here in America, hand guns and rifles are found magnetic fishing all the time. I've not found a gun, but ammo, yes. In a playground area where children play. Scary times. But even with the disarray of the river, it was still peaceful and relaxing to walk it with you.

    • @tomburleigh9261
      @tomburleigh9261  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, increasingly scary world. Part of my motivation for starting to do these mudlarking videos was I was becoming too absorbed in the news cycles, and all the horror there, and I wanted to do something calm, peaceful, and non-political. Finding the gun is an intrusion into that by something I wanted to avoid... but thankfully it's a rarity here.

    If you had one of those small lightweight plastic childrens sledges, that are almost a little bit boat like in shape you could pull it along the river with things in. Its probably a stupid idea but it just occured to me. I was thinking it would be good to get one or two of those kiddies bikes out to someone who could use them for spare parts but I dont expect you want to & I don't blame you. Actually if you did want to & there is a path behind either of the walls alongside that river it would probably be easier to tie a rope to the bike & tie the other end of the rope to a lump of wood & throw it over & then walk round. But I do not imagine you want to do that either, even if it is possible. You could do with a couple of local environmental volunteers to follow your adventures & clear things up a bit.

    • @tomburleigh9261
      @tomburleigh9261  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      🙂 I got to that site by climbing over walls, I could certainly lift a bike over with a rope, or for kids bikes, just lift it over by hand... but sadly, I don't think I've got the time, energy, or resources to run a bike recycling operation, and I know the ones that exist already have a glut of cheap, mass-produced bikes being donated.I'd certainly love a team of environmental volunteers to go whereever the problems are, I'm hoping that my reports to the Rivers and Canals Trust gets something happening though rather than having to be any sort of leader of it myself.

    Interesting video and one thing i would say is not to point weapons at yourself when handling them. Whilst it didn't have a barrel the fact there were potentially live rounds in it meant they were pointing directly at yourself. Please take care as crazy accidents happen.

My next video will be back in that stream, I do wonder if the Johnsons would like it too.... hunting for coins and relics in the cracks between cobblestones. They've filmed in the lower reaches of the stream, (they generally stay in a hotel near there), and that's where they found Manky. 🙂

    Sir Tom,
    Someone may have said this already but what I saw of the gun it appears to be a 45 long colt which is also known as a “cowboy gun”. The barrel doesn’t come out like a “normal” revolver to load it you have to load the ammunition 1 at a time.

    The gun looks like a replica Colt .45. The barrel appears to be solid, so not one that can be fired. Live ammunition would be lethal to anyone trying to fire it with a solid barrel, but it could probably fire a blank charge for the sound effect. It’s also not the style of gun used today. Mostly they’re used by Wild West reenactment groups.

    • @tomburleigh9261
      @tomburleigh9261  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the information. The context of where it was, and the stripped down state of it suggests that it might have been used to threaten someone, perhaps in a fake armed robbery. There is also an organization called the Corps of Engineers that do a lot of good for our forests, rivers and streams. You won't see things like that here very often as they do a really good job keeping everything clean.

      Not that I know of. There's the Corps of Royal Engineers, but I think they're usually army work, and only sent out to help civilians in times of extreme need, like flood response. We do have an environment agency that's supposed to look after a lot of our rivers, the canals and rivers trust which looks after others, the National Trust and local councils... all of these are underfunded, and have to prioritise other things.

The police were glad I turned it in too, last time they were called out in that town by a member of the public, who'd thought they'd seen someone flashing a gun, it turned out to be a toy; but they still had to shut down part of a street and deploy armed police; probably costing thousands when they're already overstretched and underfunded. That was not a real revolver Tom. The profile looked very much like a Colt Single Action Army from the last quarter of the 19th century However the construction is definitely that of a non-firing replica. The seam down the middle of the frame is a dead giveaway The round( you called bullet ) is a snap cap. There is no chamber to the barrel and in a true SAA the barrel is screwed into the frame ,a very viable feature. There are many non-firing replicas and deactivated firearms in the UK. It's the total ban on firearms that have fueled that market. Here in the US if a collector wants a firearm which is no longer legal to own we can order a de-activated on such as a Styre Sub Machine Gun with all the proper markings and functions as the original but has the chamber and barrel plugged. These are wonderful historical examples of the genius it took to make such a machanical marvel
    Was your find used to intimidate someone ,,,probably so.
    BTW the serial numbers would be on the frame and the cylinder. Not the grip panels.
    I enjoy your mud larking video and I applaud you for picking up all that trash.

      Hand guns weren't banned in the UK but you have to have a reason to own one, self defence and sport aren't accepted as a reason, terrier men controlling fox in the ground, deer stalkers, pest controllers, vets etc can justify ownership, we can own historic guns that have an obsolete calibre, we can also own and shoot black powder cap and ball, the gun in the river looks like one of the Brocock made revolver that shot pellets out of a pre charged .38 cartridge all you had to do was drill the barrel to the right size, they never banned ownership but stopped Brocock making them.

Nunca he visto a otro mudlarker aquí. Esa es una tradición hermosa y conmovedora ... por lo general son solo flores colocadas aquí en el sitio de eventos tan tristes. Saludos desde el reino unido
