    Mark you clearly are more grounded than a lot of hunters, there's inherent respect even for an invasive species, subsistence hunting is for survival, trophy hunting is for unwarranted prestige

      Thanks. I definitely like chasing big mature bucks, but I’m not going to kill things that won’t be eaten.

    Nice one. Great video. Good representation of what hunting is and should be. 🤙🏼

    Well done. I appreciated hearing your thoughtful attitude towards hunting and killing. Hunting Axis deer has the additional benefit of invasive species control. Kind of like shooting roi but with no ciguatera worries.

    Thanks Mark for the heartfelt feelings towards the animals. Spent time on a ranch growing up and was never happy about killing but was necessary for food. Would love to hunt some Axis Deer for sure.

    Loved the down to earth explanation at the end, no posing with the animal and great that you showed the meat you got. It would be cool to know a bit about the cuts of meat you had spread out too. Cheers.

      Thanks! Basically take the Backstraps, Tenderloin, neck meat and the front and rear quarters. It was a quartering away shot which didn’t exit the opposing shoulder so all the cuts were good on this guy.

    Awesome hunt and congrats! Are you shooting a Matthews Halon? What broadheads are you using? You should do a video on your archery set up!

    • @strikemissions
      @strikemissions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Yes, I’m shooting the Halon. The broadhead is a 100gr SEVR. They’ve worked well thus far. 🤙🏼

    Cheers for the vid. 🙂 Why don’t you use a range finder, instead of guessing the distances?

    • @strikemissions
      @strikemissions  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a range finder, but in the first instance I ranged different clumps of grass before any animals showed up. There were depressions in the terrain, so I could only range things that were 12 yards or so apart. When that first group of deer came in, the one I was targeting was standing in one of those depressions, so I estimated that it was half way between two previously raged spots. I had does looking in my direction from 18yds, so couldn't range him or they would have picked out the movement. My estimation ended up being further than he actually was and with the way these deer can jump a string it put my arrow sailing about 3" above his back

    Hey Mark you could get a lot more meat out of it, I think there is a lot wasted, you should drag the buck all the way down the mountain and cut it in piece at home. Well that is the way we do it in New Caledonia!
    But good video anyways! thanks for sharing

    I don't know much about axis deer. They look magnificent and delicious. Are people trying to eradicate them, or bring their population down to sustainable numbers?

    Loved the hunt, thanks for sharing. Did you leave the rack?

    • @strikemissions
      @strikemissions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! No, I left it. We had some miles and a couple thousand vert to get back to the camp and I wasn’t feeling too motivated to carry any unnecessary weight.

    • @warwickgibbs6303
      @warwickgibbs6303 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Healey I believe you owe it to the stag to take the rack. The meat will ‘come & go’, however each rack is unique & is forever! 🦌

      Dominique Lawson there is one outfitter on Maui that costs 2,000 dollars to shoot one buck and a couple does. The bucks are huge there and the chances are plentiful
