First heard this song on a Clapton cd. Figured it was way older then the year the cd came out and searched out the origin. It goes back before Albert King but he made it his own. Lots of great covers of this tune, Many thanks for breaking it down
Interesting video Marc. On the original recording (the one on the "Born Under A Bad Sign" album), he plays it in G# (or Ab if you want to get fussy). The other guitarist is of course Steve Cropper along with the rest of Booker T and the MGs. As you say, Albert played a Flying V left handed but strung right handed so it is quite difficult to get his sound right. He also used non-standard tunings further complicating the task. Steve Cropper said that when they were recording the album, it would take him a while to figure out the tuning and then he'd come back into the studio the following day to find that Albert had changed his tuning and he was back to square one! Albert was definitely one of a kind and I had the great fortune to see him play live in a small venue on Tottenham Court Road back in the late 1980s. He smoked a corn cob pipe all through the gig (when he wasn't singing), something that Health & Safety Officers would frown on these days 😃
As I try to learn the licks, my eyes keeps on looking at the beautiful Epiphone Les Paul, because normally you use Fender Stratocaster. Anyway, thank you very much Marc for the lesson.
Cheers from Indonesia.
