  • On December 7, 2021, Bill Lipe (Professor Emeritus, Washington State University) and Mary Weahkee (New Mexico Office of Archaeological Studies) discussed “Turkey Feather Blankets in Ancestral Pueblo History.” For over 1,600 years, a distinctive Southwestern domestic turkey furnished feathers for ritual uses and for making warm blankets. The birds also became a significant food source after about 1200 CE. Bill Lipe discussed archaeological evidence of the development of feather blankets and how they contributed to Ancestral Pueblo lives, and Mary Weahkee, the best known present-day replicator of turkey feather blankets, discussed some techniques used in making them.

That was so great, thank you to both speakers and I really enjoyed Mary's demonstration and discussing how turkey blankets are made. So impressive! Thank you to those who make these presentations available to the public.

I wonder if putting a large patch of the turkey blanket textile on the bottom of sandals will dampen your sound for hunting?

Thank you Mary! I'm certain that you're spot on with the blanket growing with you till the end. Fantastic work!

In your other video on Turkey blanket you mentioned making fans from wings. How is the wing preserved? Tail too. So much of the bird is wasted. And these parts are very useful if the limb could be preserved.
I could only find taxidermy and they said birds are to fatty to preserve.
Love hearing about the harvesting of the feathers live.

thank you for great talk. I wonder if the cordage from yucca would be just as good if you just cut the top and bottom then pull out fibers
