My father (MSG Joseph Morin) was one of 10 or 12 soldiers from Fort Bragg who was selected to appear in the Green Berets movie which was filmed at Fort Benning. I remember in 1968 going to a movie theater at Fort Bragg to watch it with the family for the first time. He had a speaking part in the movie, and I was so proud of him for that. The two weeks he was at Fort Benning for the filming, he told me John Wayne (The Duke) treated them like gold. Thanks Duke for treating my father so well, he remembered that the remaining 32 years of his life.

@Kenneth Sloan Dude was classified as 3-A for WW2 and was 34 with a bum shoulder he broke at USC and couldnt be enlisted. He had applied to the Naval Academy when he was younger and was rejected and tried getting reclassified as 1-A for WW2 to be drafted but his studio went behind his back and prevented that, he likely wouldnt have been accepted for any duty. That book sounds like a load of horse shit from a pansy who looks to criticize everyone right of mao.

Watching John Wayne's Col. Kirby fight back tears himself while trying to muster the courage to confront a tearful Ham Chuck, I don't understand how anyone can claim Wayne was not a "true actor." Great actor, and one of the greatest scenes in motion picture history. I will never NOT cry while watching it.

Reminds me of 1945 when I was allowed to return to my village in Kazan, Russia. Being one of the few who survived and returned home alive and fortunately unscathed, except for some war wounds, I can still remember my relatives and distant relations and friends and all of the village neighbors crying and weeping, their fathers taking in the news with stolid eyes but with moist eyes and tears around their eyelids. I will never forget that. So many relatives and friends lost in WW II and I can still remember them all. I am now 93 years old. WW II maybe order but it was never over for me.

@@Superiorplatypus in his defense, he was a fervent anti communist and despised the Soviet Union. He fought against the invading red army as Finnish soldier, he then allied himself with Germany and joined the SS, but didn’t take part in the holocaust to anyones knowledge. He then served as an American officer for the next 15-20 years and is considered one of the most influential green berets officers and a true warrior. He was not a nazi sympathizer and shouldn’t be regarded as one by the history books

This movie screams for a sequel (Not as a reboot movie that seems to be the Hollywood trend now) with a now full grown Ham Chung Kirby as a Green Beret Officer. A visual cue such as Ham Chung holding/ looking at Peter San's beret cover or dialog mentioning something from the 1968 movie as an indirect nod to John Wayne's character Col. Kirby would be quadruple thumbs up awesome.

My granduncle lives in a village in Kazan, as far as I am concern, even if Kazan has grown engulfing Kazan, his village is still a village. How many villages were swallowed up by growing cities and became part of that city? Think twice. My granduncle is a retired KGB analyst intelligence officer who was trained to speak ENGLISH SO THAT HE CAN PASS him self as a native American, British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand. Never use anything that connects him to Russia, use only foreign technology.

You said, "The Green Berets was one of the Dukes better movies..."
      What did others say...?
      The Guardian
      11 July, 2014
"The Green Berets: how the war was spun"
"On The Green Berets' release in 1968, the New York Times said it was "unspeakable … stupid … rotten … false in every detail … It is vile and insane. On top of that, it is dull." Getting on for half a century later, it's still hard to argue with that verdict. At least the Soviets made good propaganda movies."

HOW BAD IS IT? The Green Berets (1968)
"“The Green Berets” is considered THE WORST VIETNAM WAR MOVIE EVER MADE. Let’s see if that is an exaggeration."
      ..........
"In conclusion, it would be hard for “The Green Berets” to be as bad as its reputation. It is certainly not a good movie. You have to be an ultra-conservative to nod knowingly while you watch it. But if you are a Wayne fan, there is a lot to take comfort in. If you are just an average war movie lover, you can enjoy the action and laugh at the ridiculous moments that make it something of a camp classic. It is definitely not the worst Vietnam War movie, but it is probably the worst big budget one."

      Career After Military
10 Most Inaccurate Military Movies Ever Made
NOVEMBER 11, 2012 BY CHRIS BARKER
      2. The Green Berets (1968)
"There are many flawed Vietnam War movies, but none are quite as out of touch as John Wayne’s The Green Berets. Essentially, the film was a propaganda movie meant to counter the burgeoning anti-war movement. It was grossly misleading, both in military details and in terms of capturing the mood of the time."
      www.careeraftermilitary.com/10-most-inaccurate-military-movies-ever-made/
And so on. Reviewer after reviewer, many of them ex-military and/or Vietnam Vets, said it was either bad or worse. A couple said it was good as movie just to watch and enjoy as a John Wayne action movie, with cowboys in camo and Indians in black pajamas. But its accuracy was nearly non-existant.
Personally, I've never seen it. I did my year in SEA, I have no need to relive it. Certainly not with a movie so many others who were there have little or nothing good to say about it.

This scene and others struck me hard. My best friend who was going to return to adopt and raise me, died in October 1967. He was a green beret master sargent. His mannerisms were almost identical to that of Jim Hutton, playing Peterson, in that movie. Mac..William Wallace McGrew III from Sugar Grove, Ohio passed away in that war in Oct. 1967. There wasn't a dry eye in our house watching Huttons character's death. We were all crying watching this scene in particular. Mac came to his own funeral to let me and his mother know he made it to heaven. The lesson to learn in that is that fighting in war is not murder. God is real and the next unjust war is coming sooner than anyone is prepared for. Rapture will surely be this year and then The Great Tribulation will begin. Repent, change your mind about wanting to sin. Know that Jesus died for your sins and is your only hope of going to heaven. The thief on the cross wasn't baptized. He admitted his guilt and repented. Because he believed Jesus was the Son of God, he got to be in paradise with Jesus that very day. The other refused to believe or repent. His reward is eternal damnation. I know God, Jesus and His Holy Spirit are real. Seek Him and His kingdom while you still can. Don't be in the military fighting against the real Jesus.

The only thing that was wrong with the ending of the film is you see John Wayne walking along the beach, or shoreline with hamchung, but Vietnam faces TO the East, so therefore you would not see any setting of the Sun,I guess a little bobo of the director, but all in all I think a GREAT film!
