What I've always thought is this: Pretty much same as you said, as they fell, Toothless grabbed the part of Hiccup he could reach - his leg. But I believe he had his teeth retracted. If he didn't, there's a chance he would bite it off and he wouldn't be able to hold on to Hiccup that way. So, I think with teeth retracted, he chomped down on the leg and held tight. So tight that he crushed Hiccup's leg. Unintentionally, of course. But the leg was crushed beyond repair, Gobber saw right away that they would have no choice but to amputate it.
But when Stoic said “you brought him back alive” Gobber then said “well, not all of him” when he said “not all of him” that means toothless not off his leg, if gobber had to amputate it, then he wouldn’t have said that
@@thetiredartist7449 Well, you do have a point. But I was also considering that if it's an open wound and he was actively bleeding out, then it would be more of an emergency and they should all be more frantic about it. Lol! 😅 So I thought maybe it's a closed wound rather than an open wound... ... ... But come to think of it now, I guess maybe the fire all around could have cauterized the wound close somehow... ... ... so an already cut off leg might work too... 🤔 But whatever. 😛 Point is, Toothless grabbing on to the leg was ultimately the cause of its loss as a result of his effort to save Hiccup. ☺
@@opsatr I think you have a point. And the point of “most of him” could also refer to the fact that his leg is practically dead and irreparable. Crushing makes more sense than the leg being sheared off. Also, it’s his lower leg that’s damaged. His upper leg seems perfectly fine, seeing as his walking gait is more even, like someone who isn’t missing any limbs, while Gobber is walking awkwardly due to missing his full leg. And Toothless would have run more of a risk of damaging Hiccup’s upper leg, if not shearing it off completely.
I think he had his teeth out because that would make it easier to keep a hold of hiccup provided he doesn't do too much force and that the act of pulling hiccup to him ripped off the leg
These are good points, but if Toothless had bit off the leg completely, Hiccup would have kept falling and turned into charcoal; yet he has hardly any burns, implying that his dragon caught him successfully. We see Toothless reaching out before entering the fire, so I always thought that he wrapped his claws around (or in) the leg in a hurry and yanked Hiccup into his wings. The claw wounds + force of crashing into the ground at a weird angle caused a sort of amputation in itself. Though that's just my personal headcanon
Like she said Toothless didn’t mean to hurt Hiccup, it was either Hiccup loses a leg or he DIES. That doesn’t make Toothless a traitor it makes him a hero.

Tbh I just thought/think toothless didn’t manage to cover one of his legs with his wings, like you know when your foot is hanging out of the bed. That’s the situation I thought was here.
Um, this wouldn’t be a betrayal. There would be no point in going after Hiccup just to eat his leg. Plus, his goal was to save him anyway. Although, the moral of this is that you’ve been Click baited...
I thought Toothless didn't fully envelop him at first and so Hiccup's leg stuck out in the fire during the fall. Toothless's wings probably fully covered him by the time they hit the ground, but not in time to save his leg. Your theory could work; however, if Toothless ripped Hiccup's leg clean off, Hiccup would just have kept falling, and wouldn't have been saved. Maybe it was a mixture of the dragon bite and the fire, who knows.
Ok simple leg gets pulled and hiccup gets pulled by toothless causing a mangled leg and thats when toothless hugged hiccup with the leg sticking out causing it to be burned on the inside
Imagine Toothless grabbing on with his teeth 5 inches below the kneecap, the teeth enter and hit bone, he pulls on it, the flesh starts coming down as Hiccup gets slowed down, by the time Toothless can grab him and put his wings over him the flesh was probably torn down till his foot probably with is teeth stuck in his ankle, problem is you now have a foot of bone cleaned off and in medieval times there is no way of fixing that, so they cut the bone where the bite started and it's over...
Peeble Kitty Hiccup's leg was possibly amputated because of the bite wound. He couldn't recover so Gobber chopped it off and made him a peg leg, however amputation is quite morbid so DreamWorks possibly just omitted it and let the viewers decide
Nah, leg being ripped off would have provided enough reverse force / inertia for toothless to exceed his velocity greatly for that moment, allowing him to catch him and cover him with his wings. Makes sense.
King Crazy yeah but 2 things 1:it’s not that big of a deal and altiori does this quite a lot and nobody talks about this 2:that’s basically what happened it’s an accidental traitor So no I believe that it’s not clickbait
Mina Briggs........I was thinking the same thing! I saw a video saying "how hiccup lost his leg" which sorta drew me in.....but then I saw the scary pic of toothless and the words "traitor".......which made me want to watch this😅😅😅
This appears to be one of the only possible conclusions that make any sense. After watching this movie nearly 13 times already, Hiccup just wouldn't be able to survive any other way. Toothless' forelegs were far to short to catch Hiccup and pull him in, furthermore Toothless' arms and foreclaws aren't exactly meant for grabbing. Even if he had managed to grab him and pull him in, I doubt Hiccup's leg would take to kindly to Dragon claws digging into it to pull him up. Impact causing the injury seens exceedingly unlikely just due to how the two fell together, with Toothless taking the brunt of the landing. Lastly Gobber within the one of the final scenes states that Toothless saved "most" if Hiccup, implying he lost his leg after they had hit the ground. Whilst this theory is solid and has quite a bit if evidence backing it, I still have one question in mind; the video itself states a multitude of times that the injury was most likely unintentional on Toothless' end. So why bother hinting at it beung intentional by putting "Traitor!" within the title, whist not discussing the plausibility of the injury being intentional? Just seems like a cheap method to get views, however that is just my opinion
Thank you so much for your comment. The reason we put "traitor" is that there are those in the HTTYD community who think Toothless got back at Hiccup for shooting him down at the start of the first movie (Although it would have been better to put a ? at the end). Technically, that doesn't mean Toothless is a traitor, but more so avenging his handicap. Also, we're TH-camrs. The point IS to get people interested in clicking the video :) So long as the content is in line with the thumbnail, and it is satisfying to the viewers, we don't see the harm. Pewdiepie has a knack for that, but his content is mostly awesome, so the clickbait is fine now and again. ^_^
Alteori Firstly I would like to compliment you on the mature and efficient way you handled my suspicions. You clarified my question without comikg off aa hostile, whilst justifying the decision you made. Furthermore you even went to the length of proposing a possible solution in the form of a question mark instead if an exclamation point. Hiccup lost his leg because Toothless tried to save him. ME: **Cough** or he just got revenge for Hiccup shooting him down **COUGH** **COUGH COUGH COUGH** Coronavirus
in 1st plan of DreamWorks was kill them both - Hiccup and Toothless, but then they fought the audience will say - NO, THAT WAS TOO MUCH FOR US, SO RUDE; or something like that, what I know. So they made this version with an amputation, to balance the handicaps :) And I think this is really good version, it brings something more to story, for kids with handicaps, and in tv series ROB, DOB, RTTE or Gift of Night Fury is this thing show up in nice, kind and sometimes funny way:D
I would say there is another option: A couple tons of dragon, landing directly on his lower leg, as they crash to the ground. Bones crushed beyond recovery with viking 'medicine', so amputation became the choice, to prevent future pain. Even using his mouth with retracted teeth, he wouldn't NEED to hold Hiccup, just grab and tug to slow him down and catch him with his claws. As far as the forces, YES, Hiccup would be pulled upwards toward Toothless, but the change in velocity isn't that much. Toothless is moving FASTER than he is, to be able to catch up to him, so he only has to slow Hiccup down ENOUGH to overtake him fully. Its a few mph slower, as opposed to a dead stop in mid air. You as a person could probably pull with the same force on someone's leg and not do too much damage. And Toothless getting him back could still just apply to the fact that he was involved in damaging the leg and the result of it.
Toothless probably did not think about the damage caused to hiccups legs, due to that fact if he was not fast enough, hiccup would have died. Toothless probably bit down hard to make sure he had Hiccup, you don't really think of these little things when it's life or death, but i do understand your point. If I took this the wrong way, my apologies 🙏
Yeah... you make a great point in that car analogy. Toothless wasn't moving in the opposite direction though but getting chomped and pulled would still totally make you lose a limb. Man... Such a great movie.
I agree what your theory is. I had the thought as well. In a ironic way Toothless did get back at Hiccup back. I think Hiccup notes it in the 2nd movie. .. "You couldn't save all of me"
Like a revenge way? As if Toothless just HAD to get even? Yes, that theory is the more popular one it seems. It is very interesting and would make Toothless a darker character with impressive layers.
Alteori Go to google and look up Night Fury and click on the one that says wiki, then scroll all the way to the bottom where it shows personality and click on it. it shows nothing of him being a dark character.
Possibly was cut by the spikes while the legs are still sticking. And by impact on the ground i little too powerful. The force just make it flying of to the water. Maybe
I always just though it was burned off by the fire because that part was exposed and not protected by toothless' fire proof scales, but then when it got to a certain point toothless could cover it thereby putting it out.
So, it's not at all possible that Toothless grabbed him but while falling, didn't manage to fully envelope him until after the burn damage was so bad it had to be amputated? Considering their level of technology, the odds of Hiccup surviving an amputation of burned flesh are *MUCH* higher than the odds of him surviving infection from the bite, what with the saliva which contains billions of dragon bacteria, not to mention fish and whatever the hell else has been in his mouth. If it were the latter, I'd put his odds at a little under 1/1000000. In addition, when Hiccup is getting out of bed after the injury, Toothless sniffs and inspects the new prosthetic with caution and skepticism. This makes little sense if he bit off the leg himself *but* if the last time Toothless saw him, he did have his leg (albeit charred and blackened), he'd be surprised by it being missing. A prosthetic in and of itself wouldn't surprise him as he's seen others (and has one himself). And also, wouldn't there be part of a leg somewhere? All in all, while there isn't concrete evidence one way or the other, it seems the odds are greatly stacked in the favour of it being burn damage as opposed to dismemberment.
The reason for that is because toothless caught him before he reached the fire and tried to cover him but that little sliver of body was in the way of covering him completely and therefore was burnt off so when it was burnt off toothless was able to cover him
Ayin - Short GamingClips because you don't char up the second you hit the glowy bit, that's not how fire works. Light a fire and pass your hand through it, your skin doesn't crisp up and turn black immediately. Even after he was fully engulfed by the flames, it would be a few seconds before he took any damage. In that time, Toothless could have easily enveloped most of him, leaving the foot out by mistake and after a few dozen seconds it would need amputating.
Toothless tried grabbing hiccups leg but he accidentally rips it off. But. Hiccup kept falling so toothless ducked his wings and when they were about to hit the ground toothless caught hiccup with his wings and held him tight. when stoick held hiccup and carried him home, Gobber must of fixed his leg bc it was all broken. u may like if u agree, u do not have to. if u can pls pin me.
Nah, you're making this way too complicated, he caught him but destroyed his leg at the same time that's why be has a perfect prothesis, Gobber cut his leg off
Of course hiccup thought it was toothless!, if you were knocked out,you have a dragon next to you,and when you wake up your leg is missing, your going to think it was him!
In movie 3, the detachable leg saved his life. During the falling scene at the end, the villain was holding his leg, and Hiccup detached just in time for the light fury (Toothless' girlfriend) to catch him while letting the villain keep falling.
I would think the when Toothless wrapped his body around him, but the impact of hitting the ground injured his leg, and the doctors had to cut it off as it was to injured to fix or something
Gobber would've been his doctor. You think he even tried to doing anything other than amputate the broken leg? The moment his leg is broken, imo, is when toothless and hiccup collide with the tail of the red death. A brief shot before the impact shows hiccup trying to work the burned up tail but his foot is also stuck in the holster, second later, impact that forces hiccup from Toothless, this literally yanked his leg forcefully out of the saddle. It was never implied his leg was "Gone" when toothless unwraps him and Gobber makes his comment. I do think Gobber amputated the leg. But hey, that's just a theory, my theory ;)
someone said at the end of httyd 1 when toothless reavealed hiccup, she saw the coils of toothless's handicap tail around hicupp's foot which could have accedentally cut it off
Oh my God this is terrifying but it also makes perfect sense. I'm torn between the feeling of watching a gory horror movie and the feeling of understanding and gratitude that Toothless did everything possible to save Hiccup. 5:00 SO YOU'RE TELLING ME HE MEANT THAT LITERALLY. IT ALL MAKE SENSE NOW.
This makes sense. I like your theory of opposite velocity and your mother is one brave woman! If that was the case, Toothless did indeed need to lock unto Hiccup and change direction very quickly. I thought he wasn’t able to cover all of him in the explosion, so his leg was blasted. The biggest hint for me that Toothless was remorseful, was his somber expression when Hiccup’s father came. If he was fully successful he would have been exuberant. Thanks for the video!
She never said he bit it OFF, just that he bit it. She literally compared it to someone who had their leg hanging out a window and how the flesh was down around their ankle which was still there.
Even if Toothless had grabbed hold of hiccup and pulled him close, but bit his leg off, Toothless still had that split second to grab hiccup with his arms.
A really good theory is that since he was falling back first the closest thing to Toothless was his legs, and at the time Toothless was probably not thinking about being gentle cause retracting his teeth hiccup would easily fall. So using his teeth he grabbed his leg and wrapped his wings around him and I guess that ya know.... took his leg off?
true. And it makes sense that Toothless grabs Hiccup's leg because Toothless can't maneuver and dive faster with his broken tail so to get Hiccup grabbing the leg was his only choice to make sure he gets to Hiccup in time
Fuckin think for a minute if ya have dog that could bite your leg off would it swallow if it had to in order to save you, be logical in the very least.
Now that I think about it, Toothless brings his wings in to give less air resistance to slow him down. He grabs Hiccup’s foot, then has to re-open his wings to pull Hiccup in. That would give Toothless just barely enough time to cover Hiccup from the fire... But this still leaves me with another question... How did Hiccup end up with his head by Toothless’ head? There couldn’t have been enough time to flip Hiccup like that if it was his foot that was grabbed... Hiccup would’ve had to do a flip... Followed by Toothless falling and pulling Hiccup in... Help...?
I always thought it was the fire that made hiccup lose his leg but after watching this video I have to agree with you on the fact that toothless was the one that severed his leg.
3:07 There’s one mistake in the first movie with this thing.Remember the moment, when Astrid was falling and Toothless catchend her with his front arms?Astrid was fine,as if nothing like that happened.
You know he wouldn't actually have bitten off his leg. He would have only damaged it. The movie implies that the fire messed up his legs. Toothless just failed to save him all. It's unlikely toothless would be yanking hiccup up so fast as he was also falling you your physics is definitely way off. This is just grasping at straws
David Brown Not to mention that Toothless could grab the leg with his bead on the side, thus not penetrating the flesh with his teeth at all. And it's been proven that dragons can catch their riders in their mouths without causing damage, since they clearly do not mean to cause damage. Plus, if Toothless had grabbed the leg, it would have left all of Hiccup exposed to the fire and he would have saved only part of the leg. Which is pointless. What Toothless actually did was dive in, use his wings to put some of the fire off, grab Hiccup in an embrace but accidentally leaving the left leg exposed for a few seconds, and trying to put out more of the fire while falling down, with Hiccup's body then fully within his embrace (which would have put out the fire on Hiccup's leg, albeit leaving the damaged foot charred and in need for an amputation). Then fall to the ground. And tumble to break some of the fall. And it's also out of character for Toothless to bite Hiccup. Very much out of character. This video is beyond annoying and insulting. They even tried to claim Toothless was "traitor" just for click-baiting. @@@
Πανωραία Γιαννούτσου you're 100% right in the series's and the movies there have been hundreds of times where the dragons grab their riders from long falls and don't mutilate them. Damn this TH-cam channel is stupid as hell
Xircon yeah I just thought of it as 'ok, dramatic scene... Toothless is trying to save Hiccup from the fire, saves him, and half his leg was burnt off in the process.'
Makes more sense Hiccup cant walk Toothless cant fly Dragons fly instead of walking 24 7 Hiccup walks 24 7 so I guesss toothless did do it Thino about it
Thepphakan (Marcel) Guillory Yes and in one the holiday specials In one of the TV series hiccup Makes a tail so toothless can flying on his own just as hiccup has a fake leg to walk.
I think that Hiccup's leg bone broked into tiny pieces when he got hit very hard by the red death's tail that Toothless pulled the meat part of Hiccup's leg that Toothless pull off Hiccup's leg completely that's my answer to your question.
Actually no, the leg wouldn't break into pieces from a fall like that, it will need to be super fucking speed. I have to agree with her, it seems very accurate considering the closes thing to toothless was hiccups legs and the only thing he could use to grip onto hiccup at 100 miles per hour was his head or to be specific his mouth aka the teeth, if he grabbed onto hiccup with the teeth retracted, he would have lost hiccups grip due to saliva so he had to use his teeth to grip onto hiccup that being hiccups legs, when trying to pull hiccup to his body to shield him from the fire, the gravity probably forced the leg off causing him to lose his leg.
I honestly have always thought Toothless caused Hiccup to lose his leg, even after the first time I watched the movie as a kid. I could swear, the first time I saw the scene in theaters, there were a few frames Toothless actually opened his mouth, but I have zero proof to back this up. Regardless, I'm 100% on-board with this theory. Also, I believe there were a few moments in the Netflix series, Dragons: Race to the Edge, where Toothless literally dragged Hiccup out of danger by chomping down on his metal leg. In one episode, when Toothless was struggling to show the riders something, he even attempted to drag Hiccup with him by his leg, only for the leg to come off while Toothless ran off with it. Meanwhile, the riders were watching and wondering when Toothless would realize. The fact this became so reflexive for Toothless later on just further proves this theory.
This makes a lot of sense! At first, I always thought that it was burned off from the extreme heat of the fire, and Toothless not having managed to get all of him under cover in time- but that makes no sense when you think about it- 1: He was falling head first, and if Toothless had caught up to him, would have either easily covered him completely OR not his head, since it was the farthest point away from him- 2: There were no other parts of singed hair or clothes on Hiccup after the fall. Not even any visible soot marks- and finally 3: how Hiccup joked about how Toothless "Got him back." If It had been burned off, then Hiccup joking about it would have been more of a mean comment, as that it would not have been Toothless's fault if he hadn't managed to get him under cover in time- But instead, Toothless having to grab and yank him by the leg so he would be in under cover in time, explains the lightness and humor of the joke- it was an unavoidable result of Toothless rescuing him. This makes SO much more sense, and I now fully believe that this is what happened. You have yourself a new Subscriber :) and I will be sharing this with my sisters! They will be really interested in hearing your (VERY likely) theory!
Hiccup was falling at 100mph right, but toothless was going the same direction at roughly the same speed, so comparing toothless to a car travelling towards you is wrong because that would suggest toothless was flying upwards towards hiccup instead of the same direction. Since they are travelling at roughly the same speed I don't think that was the reason his leg was ripped off, I think instead that in order to get a firm grip on hiccup at that speed, toothless had to bite him so hard that it damaged hiccups let beyond repair, and so replacing it with a peg leg was the most suitable option
I suggested that the leg was badly burned because the only thing we saw was the people gasp aka “OH MY GOSH” and we didn’t get a look at the leg, they could’ve amputated it at their home land, nothing ever mentions that the leg was gone during the fire.
Well wouldn’t Toothless fall faster because he is larger and heavier? Heavier objects take up more space and makes it harder for the air resistance to stop them, unlike lighter objects that make the air resistance stronger.
Josh waldron wow that was the stupidest thing I've ever heard....let me help you out. When he grab his leg he *pulled up* while hiccup is still falling at 1 MPH
M&M-RacingFan 18 yes but the force toothless exerts when pulling hiccup upwards can't possibly equate to the same force as a car hitting you at 100mph while you are already going at 100mph, that would mean toothless has the power to pull hiccup upwards at 200mph. And hiccup wasn't falling at 1mph...
Incase you actually couldn't tell at 3:05 you can see toothless reaching out to grab him with his paws/claws. He probably didn't BITE his legs off, like you've said. He also could've wrapped Hiccup up without realizing his leg was still exposed, there are other ways to look at this- We never actually see the leg after this has happen so if he bit hiccups it off, there would've been a lot of blood. It could've just been severely burnt (like I said before) so they had to cut it off.
3 yes later he’s a counter point His head is closer and has a better grip It’s a child’s film there not gonna add heap load of blood If hiccups leg was hanging out he would of caught on fire as well and even if he didn’t there would still be burn marks And final point When it revealed toothless saved hiccup his leg isn’t and fire and when stoic says you saved him gobber replies with most of him meaning he lost his leg during the fall

What I've always thought is this:
Pretty much same as you said, as they fell, Toothless grabbed the part of Hiccup he could reach - his leg.

But whatever.

Just what I was gonna say
Nah, leg being ripped off would have provided enough reverse force / inertia for toothless to exceed his velocity greatly for that moment, allowing him to catch him and cover him with his wings. Makes sense.
I mean ur not wrong but why does the picture say traitor?

Him still got astrid and his kids

Agreed as well. 🐅
AGREED

The Creature same here
The Creature I thought it was broken and so they just cut it off
When Stoick thanks Toothless for saving his son, Gobber looks down and says "Well, MOST of him", implying the foot is already gone.
The Creature it was this video is dumb
So true
TyphoonZebra DEBUNKED
NOICE THEORYYYYYY DUDEDEDEDEDEDEDEDEDEDEDCEDEDEDEDEDEDEDEDED
I LOIKE IT
TyphoonZebra but why didn't the rest of his body (which was closer to the fire) get burnt???
Atleast he saved him
Pazxy - Httyd I agree with you
If you whacthed closley toothles's head did'nt go as far as his wings do he grabbed hiccup with his wings and pulled hiccup in

Pazxy - Httyd exactly I mean he tried
True true
I think hiccup was wrapped up in toothless’s wings, but one of the legs were stuck out and was burnt off of him
Toothless tried grabbing hiccups leg but he accidentally rips it off.

When you question movie logic 😂
In movie 3, the detachable leg saved his life. During the falling scene at the end, the villain was holding his leg, and Hiccup detached just in time for the light fury (Toothless' girlfriend) to catch him while letting the villain keep falling.
I would think the when Toothless wrapped his body around him, but the impact of hitting the ground injured his leg, and the doctors had to cut it off as it was to injured to fix or something
What doctors?
This person is right don't listen to this youtuber
Gobber and gothi
His leg was already gone lol

@@sian8322 cba to watch the video again to prove a point but I'm pretty sure she said he bit it off
She never said he bit it OFF, just that he bit it. She literally compared it to someone who had their leg hanging out a window and how the flesh was down around their ankle which was still there.
True or he could have bit his leg and pulled Hic towards him and accidentally bit his leg off as Toothless was pulling Hic towards him?

Help...?

DUDE HICCUP CAN WALK AND TOOTHLESS CAN FLY.
No toothless had to get even my guy- since hiccup shot one of his tail wings- And toothless ate his leg-
I honestly have always thought Toothless caused Hiccup to lose his leg, even after the first time I watched the movie as a kid.
Aww. Thank you for that! Glad to also have subs who love HTTYD!
Love it? I'm there

Josh waldron well acording to the theory toothless both bites and pulls hicup the combined strenght of those actions must have ripped hiccup's leg
3 yes later he’s a counter point
His head is closer and has a better grip
It’s a child’s film there not gonna add heap load of blood
If hiccups leg was hanging out he would of caught on fire as well and even if he didn’t there would still be burn marks
And final point
When it revealed toothless saved hiccup his leg isn’t and fire and when stoic says you saved him gobber replies with most of him meaning he lost his leg during the fall
