How did Soldiers Describe setting up the Dog Tent?

How did Civil War soldiers describe using their dog tent? How many people did the original cast say would usually sleep in the tent? Well, this letter from a Civil War soldier answers both of those questions.

As a former Infantryman in the US Army in the early 80s this is almost the way how we would set up are tent except we used are tent poles. Some times we would connect more tent halves together to make condos to shelter are buddies. However the higher ups would banned this. They would say one Mortar round would take out the whole squad! 😌

Yep we were told by Top to tear it down. He was a Vietnam war veteran.😌

Roughly the same thing was issued in the U.S. Army at least through the 1980's, we called them Shelter Halves.
USGI ponchos are also set up with snaps for the same purpose.

I've slept in a dog tent with two other men at an event before. The two of us on either side ended up with an outline in the frost outside the tent from where the outer edge of our bodies went under the canvas. The man in the midde said he stayed plenty warm.

in 84-85 we pick up the 2 poncho per Marine idea from aa SF A team. scrounged them up. lighter and mor shelter than a odd Marine who only had a "shelter half" and stuck

I followed the narrative about adding the third shelter half but I can't really picture how that would look. I get how the third piece's short side is being attached to the other two shelter half's short sides and over the top of a guy rope. When I construct it in my head I just see the added portion being open to the elements at the top somewhat especially if the wind starts to whip it around. I'll probably try it and see how it works.
