Jaron Lanier Fixes the Internet | NYT Opinion

  • Computer scientist and futurist Jaron Lanier has a plan to fix the internet. This Silicon Valley maverick has a radical vision for how we can all earn money from our data.
    Every time you click on a website -- yes, even that ad right there -- a company is keeping a little bit of your information, and someone somewhere is making money off of it.
    Lanier argues that every bit of data out there belongs to the person who created it, and if anyone should be getting paid for it, it's you. He has a plan to make this happen.

      Lanier should be in Andrew Yang's cabinet. There needs to be a Department of Technology. Andrew Yang already says that he will be in touch with Silicon Valley folks to know what they are working on and try to point them in a different direction if what they are working on might not be such a good idea. We need a president who communicates with Silicon Valley and supports human-centered technology.

    • @le_th_
      @le_th_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Empathy for others. That is #1 what it takes to recognize a dystopia.
      Ability to think deeply about matters. That is #2.
      Personality traits scoring high on conscientiousness, mid-range on extroversion, and mid-range on agreeableness.
      Those are my guesses.

    • @le_th_
      @le_th_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mountain Whale Please tell how you expect to do that...create a society all will consider dystopian...when you have people with empathy who respect the social contract and the rights of others and those who prefer chaos and destruction (sociopaths and psychopaths) and ignore the rights of others?
      I eagerly await how you plan to achieve this.
      ...and you fail to understand what empathy is if you think it's "hippy love". You may need to think a little more deeply and broadly before you grasp what it is and what it is NOT.

      freedom dividend is quite literally welfare capitalism, aka social democracy (capitalism with a social safety net), which in some sense can be referred to as socialism (if one considers the etymology of the term and doesn't just pick their favorite definition from google). I would argue it would simply be a bandaid on a much bigger problem, would further prevent wage increases and probably just placate the masses even more.
      Your comment makes you sound like a social democrat which would align more with Bernie Sanders, who has spent his entire career trying to save capitalism by strengthening the safety net.

    "Data is the new oil."
    Yep, and we already live in ever-increasing data/message pollution, heading straight for the Dystopia Jaron describes.(If we're not already there)
    What we easily forget about Information is that it requires Energy to create, store and transport. Jarons plan sounds nice but it will just increase the huge amounts of energy already needed to run the Net, by adding another cascade of data energy from every single Info-event. Data centres use huge amounts of power, adding to the overall energy-use bill, and inevitably adding proportional heat to the system. Apple wanted to build a data centre in Ireland which would have used as much power as Dublin, the largest city of 1.5 million people....! ?
    Haven't even mentioned how financial Power will act as it always does....to maintain itself, like banks, corporations seeking monopoly
    Or the possible adverse mental health effects.
    Remember the opening scene of Johnny Mnemonic where people were twitching and jerking from NAS(Nerve Attenuation Syndrome), or Information Overload....?

      @@Edvontinkleberg Even worse, with everybody selling data companies would pay less for it. Also, companies like exclusivity of data, it's the only major difference companies can have nowadays (explains Amazon failure in China, Apple behind Google in maps...). So they would offer it but with more controls and monitoring over user activity.

While the vast majority of people have had enough experience with life's hardships to realize the difficulties there would be implementing something even remotely close to this. It's pathetic. Several people commenting on how the algorithms work in their particular favour...yet this video should have millions of views, not 80k. Among my family, colleagues and friends, all people I respect, the absolute majority has no clue about what they are a part of. If you're advocating change, having a clear understanding of your current condition is absolutely crucial - and we're lightyears away from that.

    This video was so beautiful to watch and was uniquely engaging by how it played out the topic through different visual art forms that weren't rushed like much other news platforms are. The MID graphics display was very easy to understand and had refreshing icons. I was very pleased with this, and think I can hold an actual conversation about digital dignity. On another note, he didn't give a concise sure answer on how they would provide internet to the poor but replied saying they would figure it out when they get there. I couldn't go for this without knowing how they intend to preserve free internet. It gives too much autonomy and knowledge for all people with access to it to take away.

    We humans sure can be knuckleheads, but whenever presented with big societal, economic, or political obstacles and problems we always find creative solutions. With all our accumulated progress, I believe these challenges are becoming less and less difficult to overcome. I predict a future of abundant options. We simply have to collectively choose to make our future abundant. The few in power are becoming obsolete. The masses are gaining ground.
    I am not clear yet on exactly how our data translates to cold hard cash, but I do know it's valuable. I love this idea. Let's do it! Go team human.
