- Visit to Falls Irrigation Dam in Central Otago, New Zealand located north of the township of St Bathans. Built in the 1930s at the height of the Great Depression, Falls Dam is an impressive engineering structure and located in remote and stunning scenery with dramatic seasonal contrasts. Special thanks to Simon in Pioneer Energy for making this happen and supplying the winter photos and video footage.
I remember going there way back in late 80's/90's and seeing that giant hole. It gave me nightmares as a child.
Pretty cool to finally see how long that tunnel goes and what’s inside it, I’ve been wondering about it for years,
Cheers
I seen a few nice trout in that outlet pond a couple of years back, it a magic part of the country for sure
Excellent. Thanks
Interesting lived in New Zealand my whole life and never knew about this place 😂
Visited in the late 70s before the power station, main memory, the number of gates I had to open and close, going in and coming back.
Been there once, that big hole gave me the creeps!
Same here.
Fantastic video. How did you gain access to the dam? l would love to photograph it.
Thanks. I got special permission for access mostly because my brother works for Pioneer Energy who manage it.
Thank you for your reply. I find these large dams fascinating. Could you possibly connect me with your brother? I would like permission to photograph the axis drive tunnel, just as you did. Thanks in advance. Andrew @@scottybsactiveinterests
Aus gov should be looking across to NZ for inspiration to control floods and dams from overflowing.
