i use the raspberry pi b+. I burn the noobs and it start ok but the owncloud it doesnt do anything. The card is a 4gb and it say 37.8mb is free from the 55.9mb. What is happening what i do wrong ???? Only the red led is on the green start snd after 2 sec go off.
I was just thinking in making a private cloud in my home with raspberry PI es one day ago! one of the huge advantages of this is the internet connection, because 100Mbs is not enough!
@IHEartLReoy: And someday someone might knock you out and leap away not only with your wallet, but with your 1TB hard drive aswell! Goodbye 10+ years of "My Documents"!
Why not use BitTorrent Sync or SyncThing? BTSync recently added a WebUI (like OwnCloud) and both allow things to work without port forwarding thanks to UPnP.
The cloud is not synonymous with the internet nor with IaaS, the latter which you have confused here. Cloud requires for example, self service, provisioning and elasticity. This is just internet connected storage.
Generally speaking NAS devices only work within a local network whereas "cloud storage" in this video can be stored on NAS or backed by some other form of permanent storage and provides access via a Web interface.
Cut to the chase at 3:40 The problem with this idea is that yes, you have your own cloud, and if you have nothing of value on it, and you want to spend years doing your own software development support and architecture, to say nothing of backups, and you also are able to stand or manage a security breach ... then fine. I don't mean to say this is good or bad, it's a cool idea and informational to those who view it, but having done a lot of this hobby stuff over the years, and seen all the stuff I had learned become useless and then easier so that anyone can do it ... what is the point to re-inventing the wheel? I liked the video on how to hack ethernet cables ... that had some good ideas by the way.
Alex Net It uses the same as a standard web server (since this setup is basically storage with a web server and a database). 80 for HTTP, and 443 for SSL/TLS.
I heard a talk in TED they said that internet was not designed to today's load hence it will broke someday one of the co designer is warning the world that we should find a another alternative before it is too late... Any thoughts folks
Tinkernut I get a 404 error when I navigate to the pi's IP address and go to owncloud. I have no clue what I have done wrong. I checked the IP and that seems correct. Have I missed something?
Tinkernut at 4:07 you said plug ethernet and else, but video shows only monitor, power, sd card and keyboard (maybe usb hub), and no ethernet which is important. Maybe you reuse clips?
Hi Tinkernut I've run into a problem and I don't know what caused it. I use Win32DiskImager for writing the image to the SD card. I have a RPi model 2B and it should do everything fine. Upon boot I just get the colourful raspbian screen with red and yellow. It doesn't go any further than that. Would you happen to know what might be going on? Corrupted memory card maybe?
i use pogo plug. i bought one of there boxs which connects to your home network and then you can plug in a hard drive or multiple drives, which then with there installed software will pull it up on my computer as another hard drive that can be accessed by all of your computers/ tabs/ phones or whatever has the program or application installed. so long as your internet doesnt go down at home and you have internet wherever you are you can access the data stored on your drives at home while you are on the go. they also offer storage on there website. another good thing about it is if you are at home and your internet goes out for whatever reason, you can still access the data on the drive through the network rather then over the internet its self.
This is genius. But I have a question, whatever happened to iCloud security (Fappening 2014), what are the security constraints to be considered when I am making my own "The Cloud" storage? Owncloud will provide all security? And bandwidth wise, how fast is this? There are some free could storage which takes forever to upload and download files and there are dropbox n skydrive that's almost instant to upload my files..
If you are keeping the pi in your own home then the upload/download should not be a problem when in your home. And for security you could just not enable port forwarding so that your data could never leave your home. However this would make the point of setting this up almost pointless but that's your decision.
Are you using your Pi as a cloud? And if so how do you store al your data to the cloud if it's only between 4-64 Gigs when your data might take up to 1TB of storage space or more?... My Pi doesn't (yet) read my external hard drive... which is something I will be looking into in the future for when I make a robot that will have as much data as it can access from an external hard drive... like words, phrases, commands and functions.
Awesome video, I might just try this out because I have a raspberry pi sitting around collecting dust and I've wanted to do something like this for a while.
I have A raspberry pi but my friend broke it... Don't ask how, How would I do this on My Pc, I no longer use it for gaming so yeah and it has 11 gigabytes of ram 2hdds and a Ok processor 2ghz, Also there is very few videos of port forwarding with An Apple Router (3rd Gen in my case) and whenever I try it doesn't Work D: (WINDOWS 7)
First of all, I'm sorry, I was on holiday to London and nearly forgot about this comment, and that is why I haven't replied yet. Second, I personally don't really like the extremist parts of Mein Kampf and would suggest something that fits your channel and thus more of your viewers would find interesting, like The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams. Your voice would significantly add to the already compelling storyline. You could also do a podcast version like Eneasz Brodski did to Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality by Eliezer Yudkowsky. Eneasz published his audiobook version per chapter, one per week over a period of two years.
Tinkernut Didn't know where to put this but hey why not here :D. I have 2 unused routers, do you think that there could be a project that could be done to use them? I was thinking of a VPN (one here, one at a friends house) but my grasp on the subject is most likley wrong. Just a video idea if you don't have enough already :D
ZaxionZen I did a couple videos a while back turning a router into a Wi-Fi radio and one into a Wi-Fi extender. I'd look into DD-WRT or Tomato for routers.
coud anybody help beng resherching for monthes and i have goten knower i have a fileserver i was wondering how to link my file server to a website i am useing filezila and i would like the content on the website to be public and help
Why is it when i download the image file its coming up as corrupted and raspberri pi is showing some kind of rainbow on the screen please somone helppp
i want to create this but on vbox with linux and share everything with an external wifi adapter and i want to create my own web app not the "owncloud" and i have an external harddrive that will be the main storage cloud device can you help me ??
Yes, Get a static IP, Forward a domain/subdomain to your home's static IP, Install SSL cert for domain/subdomain onto PI, Done In theory this is possible but I can imagine it would be a pain.
I don't think it's really that much effort to make a personal cloud, really you can just connect your second computer up to the net work, and drag and drop files from your main computer to the other computer though the network, don't think you even need to download anything. There are also programs like Dropbox LAN sync. And so much more. Nice vid, make more!
You said to use vim and in the video you use nano ? Also saying Save and Exit might not come so easy for everyone as vim and nano have both their own save and exit commands which are quite different. You should elaborate more on these things or state the viewer should know basic Linux / UNIX for this video. Liked the video anyways ;)
You should do more videos that are just to teach about concepts, not like tutorials for a project. Basically extending what you do in the beginning of your videos to go into more depth on it.
+The Dragonians Guessed how to fix it, First take sd card out and put into computer , next open config file then uncomment the no HDMI output 1 and it should work

Sorry Tinkernut but the quality for the other videos you implemented into this video, it's a bit bad. But still this tutorial is great. I have a Raspberry Pi myself but I have Raspbian on it instead.
this is how it works in the bottom he has the downloads but you have to go to his site but when you get to the site no download link wtf just give us the download without having to go to your website plz
The second thing I like about you is the brief history you give before starting every topic.
The first thing is your voice.
did you compose the long-used background music? can we download it? its really nice x)
Just finished a competition with the Pi and was wondering what to do now with it? Thanks Tink!
Im from Germany , i can speak english ... BUT WHY DID I JUST WATCH A SPANISH AD ? TH-cam , go home you're drunk ...
Lol a spanish AD??? I am from Greece and I can only see Greek And English ADs
are you using a VPN service?
I'm german too, but they send me ads in Korean
What program do you use to edit your videos?
After effects + premiere
דוד שלמייב
How about Tinkernut? What does he use?
MMQuck no, he uses those programs
MMQuck After effects + premiere ;-)
Tinkernut Tinkernut, I've been your fan forever :) You're the best for real doe.
I haven't see your vids in forever. but long time subscriber.
i use the raspberry pi b+. I burn the noobs and it start ok but the owncloud it doesnt do anything. The card is a 4gb and it say 37.8mb is free from the 55.9mb. What is happening what i do wrong ???? Only the red led is on the green start snd after 2 sec go off.
Did you set up the rest of the server stack (Web server-database-PHP) required to run Owncloud?
I was just thinking in making a private cloud in my home with raspberry PI es one day ago! one of the huge advantages of this is the internet connection, because 100Mbs is not enough!
Can you help I have a windows 98 se pc but I can't connect to internet without a dialup connection
We have terminals and few servers in our school too. Also we have a archive that has basicly everything about our school (photos and so on)
Don't trust any program like owncloud. Just carry around your external 1TB hard drive and use that.
M Two! :)
Good thing my iPhone has a sata connector...
ikr
In that case, you shouldn't trust hardware manufacturers either - their firmware or drivers might be suspect too. :P
@IHEartLReoy: And someday someone might knock you out and leap away not only with your wallet, but with your 1TB hard drive aswell! Goodbye 10+ years of "My Documents"!

Thanks for finally showing a btc QR code for donations!
You can use any Linux OS as a " Cloud", on any computer!
How ??
normally. just install some linux-based system and create a network
Great, another use for my Raspberry Pi, is their a way that i can make the files goto an external hard drive insted?
Holy Cow, that video was awesome. If you would excuse me now, I have a cloud to make.
Does the iimage have to be installed on an sd card or can i install it on a flash drive instead
Cut to the chase at 3:40

Can you talk about using owncloud and bittorrent sync together on a raspberry pi, but with raspian or something please?
The dry humor alone is worth watching this video for :D
Hi, I already have burned the Rapbian image to my SD card is there a way how to replace it with the own cloud image ? Thanks for answer.
where did you learned all the programming and electronics? (i'm not english)
You could use your modem/router if it supports NAS
how would we go about finding the port owncloud uses to set up port forwarding?
Alex Net It uses the same as a standard web server (since this setup is basically storage with a web server and a database). 80 for HTTP, and 443 for SSL/TLS.
I heard a talk in TED they said that internet was not designed to today's load hence it will broke someday one of the co designer is warning the world that we should find a another alternative before it is too late... Any thoughts folks
Tinkernut I get a 404 error when I navigate to the pi's IP address and go to owncloud. I have no clue what I have done wrong. I checked the IP and that seems correct. Have I missed something?
hi there nice video you got there, could you tell what software do you use for that, much appreciate
Awesome! Can't wait for the R-Pi NAS!
Tinkernut at 4:07 you said plug ethernet and else, but video shows only monitor, power, sd card and keyboard (maybe usb hub), and no ethernet which is important. Maybe you reuse clips?
I used a USB hub with a wireless USB adapter. That was the actual clip.
Hi Tinkernut I've run into a problem and I don't know what caused it. I use Win32DiskImager for writing the image to the SD card. I have a RPi model 2B and it should do everything fine. How would you add an external storage device so that data is saved there rather than the sdcard?
hemal rajput You should be able to just plug it in and mount it.
Thanks again for another cool view, Tinkernut !

The link to the owncloud thing no longer works.
Owncloud is good but the files need to download before you are able to view them. Is there anything like this but it streams the files instead?
There's plugins for streaming video and audio through owncloud, and it has a cloud text editor so that you don't have download certain documents.

artblack01 I had my 3 TB raided backup drive connected to my Pi and it reads it just fine.
I wonder if you use the Raspberry Pi Supercomputer tutorial and this tutorial if you would get a super server!
Really liked the intro history lesson :)
What if the gateway isn't the first in the range?
Hey, really love your intro video, what did you use to create it ?
Whats the difference between the nas and the own cloud
Awesome video, I might just try this out because I have a raspberry pi sitting around collecting dust and I've wanted to do something like this for a while.
Can you show us how to make a BBS? i want to make a BBS for file transfer in my home

Would you PLEASE narrate an audiobook? Seriously, your voice is perfect.
***** Which book would you suggest?
Tinkernut Mein Kampf?
hey heysen That works. But I was thinking more along the lines of the Magna Carta or Craig's List postings.
First of all, I'm sorry, I was on holiday to London and nearly forgot about this comment, and that is why I haven't replied yet. How about narrating The Prince from Niccoló Machevilli?
Isn't this basically a NAS? but with an interface through ip address?
Yeah, it can be used as a NAS, but it also has the ability to do cloud computing, which most NAS's don't have.
Tinkernut Didn't know where to put this but hey why not here :D. I have 2 unused routers, do you think that there could be a project that could be done to use them? :)
It won't find a gateway at 10.1.1.1
Maybe 10.1.1.20
;)
what about if i want to make a cloud server on linux Vmware or a spare PC
Everything after installing Raspbian and configuring the Pi should be identical, though you won't need X running.
What is better? NAS or cloud?
Why is it when i download the image file its coming up as corrupted and raspberri pi is showing some kind of rainbow on the screen please somone helppp
because yours is gay. lol
i want to create this but on vbox with linux and share everything with an external wifi adapter

Nope. You're on your own ;-)
ok thanks anyway :p
oh hey you're still alive!
Yeah, your assassin failed.
projectcapsule
Wouldn't FTP server, enabled on router, do the same job?
This is why I love you.
Wai.... wai... how do I do this on a spare laptop running win 8?
Assuming you don't use that computer for anything else but host the cloud server, you'll need to have set up a web server, a DBMS, and PHP.
Really looking forward to the pi NAS tut!
YAY I CAN MAKE A CLOUD IN DA SKY FOR MOI SW4G
I'll stay with my good old home server, it works as VPN too.
How can you secure the connection with HTTPS? (on the pi)
Yes,
Get a static IP,
Forward a domain/subdomain to your home's static IP,
Install SSL cert for domain/subdomain onto PI,
Done
In theory this is possible but I can imagine it would be a pain.
Check out startssl.com for free SSL certs as well :3
Michael Scott Great suggestion!

I'm actually working on that righ tnow.
Can i make a cloud with a macbook pro runing maverics?
Carly Simon would be upset - instead of clouds in your coffee, you will have clouds in your pi!
+ggin nj - and I'll bet you think this comment is about you!
Weird, cloud to butt isn't working on the title of this video, or any of the comments.
what rpi model do i need?
Well that's a really mean mainframe you got there, 1:03.
Can we install Own cloud to NAS???
My Raspberry Pi B+ won't boot up any suggestions?
+The Dragonians Guessed how to fix it, First take sd card out and put into computer , next open config file then uncomment the no HDMI output 1 and it should work

Great tip! Thanks!
What's the difference between having an "Owncloud" and having a "NAS?"
A "NAS" or Network Attached Storage is the physical device that will store your data. Owncloud is an interface that you can use to connect to your NAS to access your files when you are not on your local network. An example would be if your NAS was in New York, but you are currently in Chicago, you could log onto Owncloud to get to a file on your NAS.
blkjax I see. Thanks. I have another question then; how do you access your files while you are home?
Victor, once you have the NAS setup, it should appear like a drive that you can access on your network.
Still haven't seen an American mention Tim Berners-Lee when it comes to the internet... The Raspberry Pi was UK folks too...
Tim Berners-Lee created the World-Wide-Web, as well as the first web site. Although the internet itself was an American project.
Dave Young Tim Berners-Lee is one of my heroes, and I've mentioned him quite often in my previous videos. He invented the World Wide Web, which wasn't really a focus of this video. I consider technology and the internet a worldwide creation and think that confining technology to countries or borders limits it's depth and potential. Please don't make assumptions of me just because of my geographic location and I will be sure to return the favor.
Can my mainframe rain?
How do you do it on windows,
You should create a video about the 'Bad USB' exploit and how it works ;)
Ehhh is there a way to do it with out a raspberry pi? To lazy to buy one.
yeah, just download and install owncloud on any mac, pc, or linux computer.
Tinkernut Would this world through VirtualMachine?
Pamgin Yes, but you would have to configure the network adapter to connect to your network, as it is not enabled by default.
5:56 PINAS
Sorry Tinkernut but the quality for the other videos you implemented into this video, it's a bit bad. But still this tutorial is great. I have a Raspberry Pi myself but I have Raspbian on it instead.
Blurby Boo Which part did you think was bad? I'm always open to constructive criticism.
Well.. err.. here's 2 pictures: 1st picture: prntscr.com/4w4qec
2nd picture: prntscr.com/4w4qyp
They explain a bit better..
Plus I hope I get featured in your comments show ;)
now can you please show us how to make this cloud from scratch on something like Ubuntu server.
1. go to owncloud.org and download it. 2. Read the documentation. 3. Install it. 4. Done.
ok thx ill look into it
Is your name Daniel?
this is how it works in the bottom he has the downloads but you have to go to his site but when you get to the site no download link wtf just give us the download without having to go to your website plz
1:18 Yes.
what if we are not using a pie
What happened to your cool dude voice I remember from years ago?
