I love that everyone is appreciating her voice because she absolutely deserves it, but if you're unfamiliar with the lyrics and history this song captures, please research it, as it's incredibly important for us to be aware of the horrors of lynching in/before the Jim Crow era (and honestly some lynching that continues today). Billie Holiday was the first person to sing this song and she was an absolute warrior, continuing to perform it and bring awareness to this horrifying truth even when the fbi was after her. Her succumbing to a drug addiction (caused by trauma) was absolutely tragic.
I often see comments saying that there isn't the same level of talent today as there was X Y Z years ago. For me the truth is that even X Y Z years ago there was a lot of below par performers and music.... I think that this performance shows that great music is still alive , being understood and performed
