- John Legend in The People Speak performing Strange Fruit. The song, made famous by Billie Holiday's 1939 recording, was written as a poem in 1937 poem by Abel Meeropol in reaction to a photograph of two lynched teenagers:

It is a deep wound that has never fully healed, tragic...
All these years and it is worse. Social Media opened my eyes when, to my horror, I discovered how many of my close friends were racists & bigots. I was truly shocked & saddened. On the bright side, it seems the world has more humanitarians than haters. George Floyd’s (rest his soul) death rocked the whole world. 😢💚

He's a talented singer for sure, but I just don't feel the same listening to this as to Billie Holiday's, Nina Simone's, or Jeff Buckley's versions. I don't think he lets enough emotion leak into his vocals. He's thinking too much and feeling too little, as Chaplin would say.

Exactly. He's using the song as a springboard to showcase his vocal technique and style. It's awful. There's no life in his delivery. Robert Wyatt does a beautiful, albeit imperfect version of the song. Check it out. And of course, nothing comes even close to Billie Holiday's interpretation.
John Doe to be honest, I feel really moved by his version actually. So i don’t agree with you idea. It is too easy to Compare him to monsters of Sing and say it is not as good that them. I mean, Nina Simone is just the Queen by exemple.

It’s southern trees bearing strange fruit - he said “southern trees bear a strange fruit”. At first, I think - this is a God awful rendition, does he even know what the song is about? And yet, after my initial anger, I hear how serene the pastoral scene is amid the carnage of the black bodies swinging in the southern trees. It is a very interesting juxtaposition. .

This is good but listen to Nina Simone sing it.. It is amazing. She lived closer to the bad times and you can hear the “experience “ in her heart.. Sorry John, she blows this away. I feel like she saw the things she sings about. Makes my soul hurt.
