In Hollywood there are dialog coaches that help actors speak foreign lines. Usually it's only 1 or 2 sentences but Carrey speaks a lot of lines here. They're all memorized. Anyway the dialog coach may have been a Japanese who spoke Korean as a second language. The movie business is very sloppy in this regard. I speak Russian and French and I have never understood American actors speaking those languages in movies (unless they use native speakers)
+olgasM3 Have you seen Captain America 2? There was the scene at the beginning where Captain America speaks with a French guy. I laughed so hard when I heard that the accent was definitely from Quebec. I'm from Quebec, but they tried to sell a villain from France as a Quebecker. Actually, the whole cinema erupted in laughter. :)

I'm not Korean, I'm from Argentina but I agree with you. It's a soothing voice that he uses to talk Korean and that must took a lot of effort to learn the language at least for that movie.
It's hard enough to learn a language with drastically different intonations and grammar from the one you're used to. Anybody who shames a person for being brave enough to go outside of their comfort zone like that is the person who should feel ashamed. XF
I think I found out that on TH-cam when people have a negative view of something instead of saying their view they will say somebody else believes it and pretend they are talking about them.

He was awesome in that movie...and yes he will speak Korean with an accent. He just learned the language, for god's sake. That's how normal people who learns any new language speak. The learned language, but their own speaking manner. That's the way that character should speak. If he was speaking the language with so much proficiency with just that short a time, that's when you know the character portrayal is done wrong...!! Gosh !! What's wrong with people??
I think it's just jarring to hear such advanced syntax in a beginner's accent. Generally, if you get far enough to converse like that, you also learn along the way how to shape your mouth to form the words more naturally. It really doesn't feel like a failure on his part, but on the part of the language coach and the creative team. There didn't have to be a disconnect there, but there was, and that's why we're all here talking about it. I really enjoyed this movie and this scene, but I think there was some untapped potential for an even smoother portrayal there.

My Job Is Needed Hwaiting is the English word fighting but sometimes said phonetically as Hwaiting or Paiting. You can look up " Korean Fighting" on google if you want to learn more from a sites that know more than me.
That’s odd, because I lived in Japan for 5-years and I don’t hear a true Japanese accent at all. In fact, if I heard this over the telephone I would just think that some White guy was trying to speak to me in Korean.
This is really impressive! He did a good job! Not only that, but he even acted in the language expressively, like how he said that "your time will definitely come" and "she really hates my guts." I'm also very impressed by how well he got the 어 and 으 vowels, those took me a very long time. English does not have vowels like those. And that he said "hwaiting" with a great Korean accent, instead of a very English "fighting!" I think he should be proud, he did a great job.
I’m a native Korean speaker and from what I saw in interviews, he actually went and got a tutor to learn Korean for these scenes. It wasn’t just him reading phonetic sounds off a script, those few lines in Korean are actually digested by Carrey. You can see that he understands the construct of the language by listening to where he breaks the words and sentences. Instead of saying, “Ia m ad og”, he knows to break it up into, “I am a dog.”
I don't know much Korean, but his intonations make it sound more like he's speaking Japanese than Korean. But still, I can tell he did put in a lot of effort as always.
Jim actually did a phenomenal job with all things considered. Consdiering the fact that English is characteristically drastically different from Korean. Jim did a great job.
He sang a song to the dude trying to jump, and pulled him back when he least expected it and Jim ended it with a Beatles reference, "I got blisters on me fingers"
I've been studying Korean for 4 years, still not good enough at it to have a conversation with a native speaker... but, after seeing this... I guess I'll keep working...
I don't think I've seen any Hollywood actor speak a longer line in Korean with the camera in their face. Jim did an excellent job with in this scene. Jim is a perfectionist and did the whole scene on one continuous take. He did have the option of cutting in half, but he refused. The dialog was also changed numerous times but he rocked it. Yes, his pronunciation wasn't perfect. Although I can read, write and even speak Greek, Hebrew and German and am fluent in Korean and English, my pronunciation is not perfect when I speak German. I'm so proud of Jim for taking on this challenge.
Everyone arguing about accents and all, but nobody mentions how beautiful and sad this scene is. The acting from both Jim and the Korean lady was great and the dialogue was well written and relatable. I like this scene.
The movie situation is in Korea. Most likely people around him speak Korean. Storyline, plot and setting. I probably will talk excitedly with Koreaboos or whatsoever is their name. The best way to learn a language is by using it. Well at least you will be able to know if someone is swearing at you in different language. Plus, I don't understand why people love to put labels on everything. Poor world, no hopes when people are laughing at others, meanwhile they miss a chance to see how ridiculous they are for others too. Sad people.

It's always been my experience that foreigners tend to speak English better than we (English) do, because they have been taught how to speak correctly whereas we just pick it up from family and friends.
Can't totally agree since I've met many foreigners ( Asians / Central Americans / Europeans ) whose English was poor. But, to your point, when foreigners do speak properly or at least as well as native born Americans / British / Aussies, etc., then THAT can be pretty embarrassing! LoL.
+iKoreaan yeah i was wondering why it sounded weird xD
Yeaaa I speak Korean, but I cannot understand him. Having just visited Japan I really feel like he's confused the sounds of Korean with Japanese. haha.

I'm a Korean and I approve of his accent.
I'm korean and when I'm depressed I come here and watch this over and over again Cuz the way he talks in korean is weirdly soothing for me
I'm not Korean, I'm from Argentina but I agree with you. It's a soothing voice that he uses to talk Korean and that must took a lot of effort to learn the language at least for that movie.

I’m of Korean decent. The brutally honest answer is that Koreans are *institutionally* racist. Just look up what our pledge of allegiance was until 2007. Only the younger Koreans have a welcoming attitude of people trying to learn our language and culture, no matter their skill level.

Oh shit! ROTFL!!
Let's be fair on the accent for his Korean, there's a LOT of accents of English speakers, he did well considering.

The camera is not always on his face, there may be cuts. Not to blame his performance though

LoL.
